Lord Glorfindel
Endor is another word Tolkien used for Middle-Earth location , he mentions it in this paragraph in the Silmarillion, when Feanor was about to betray the Noldor: "The Noldor came at last far into the north of Arda; and they saw the first teeth of the ice that floated in the sea, and knew that were drawing nigh to the Helcaraxe. For between the land of Aman that in the north curved eastward, and the east-shores of ENDOR (which is Middle-Earth)" you can read this at the second to the last page of the chapter in the Silmarillion, Of the flight of the Noldor

If it wasn't a deliberate use of the word, it was probably subconscious. I know because I'm trying to write some stories at the moment (been a loooong time doing that BTW )...anyway, I came up with character and place names, and surprise, surprise, I discovered they have alrady been used in novels I read when I was a kid. It's hard actually finding new words that sound good that haven't been used before somewhere.
JediNyt
GL didnt steal it Im sure. Its a coinsidence. It happens more often than you may think. Its not a complicated name either so its easy to think of. Now youll probably never hear Barradure (sp) anywhere else.
BCanr2d2
Words like Khazad-Dum and Barad-Dur, with the accents on the u in the second part of the word would be hard for someone to make up, where as simpler ones like Endor, Gondor, Rohan etc are more likely to be repeated in other texts by other authors... Turgenev
I think YHWH has everyone beat here. Do a net search on "the Witch of Endor". It was in this book, oh what's its name... great beginning, really tedious followup, weird ending.. Oh yeah, the Bible.
JediNyt
Thx BCanr2d2. Barad-Dur. So Endor was also in the Bible huh? Not surprising. The Witch of Endor...hmm...well what else can you expect from such a religious book?

wassup
This is what I got of of the best Tolkien resource on the web, The Encyclopedia of Arda Endor - A Sindarin name for Middle-earth The older name in Sindarin for the region much better known as Middle-earth. I really think this is just a coincidence...
X R Kun
Do u know that Tatooine is actually a city( or town ) in Tunisia? The Tatooine scenes in both ANH and TPM were shot there. The set of Luke's farm is still there but was converted to a hotel or something. And anakin's house is actually houses of the ppl living there, with a few conduits and high tech stuff thrown to give a more sci-fi look
Kstar__2
the last thing you said isn't true. everything there is made my lucasfilm. the name could be true. well, it really doesn't surprice me that SW has some think out of LOTR, i mean, it is both fantasy. next topic: is it a coincidence that ewoks have hairy feet? thehomicidalegg
Its more of a coincidence imo, as Endor is a rather plain word. Tolkein derived it btw by combining the sindarin( the language he created) En- meaning middle with the suffix -dor meaning land, so i doubt he copied the word from somewhere else. StormHammer
Yes, the stuff about the location in Tunisia is true. You might be interested in this site which now specialises in making a profit out of conducting 'Star Wars' tours in that area. BTW, the actual spelling is Tataouine, although I believe it is pronounced as it is in the films. AFAIK the strange buildings show in TPM were actually people's dwellings, though I might be mistaken. Some other locations were simply strange abandoned constructs that were utilised as dwellings. No filming was conducted in the actual city of Tataouine, but in the region, which has the same name. Info courtesy of a simple Google search.
