Acrylic
Ok. Lots of people say Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb. I dont believe it. I think that Nikola Tesla invented it.....where can I find information on him, and where can I find some info on him?
Boba Rhett
I've had quite the obsession fascination with Tesla for a long time. His life was a pretty sad story. I'll try and dig up my old links. While I do that, enjoy this cool experiment involving a tesla coil and a cd.
Kain
i never heard of the guy...any one wanna give some background info. btw, Rhett. What is that a picture of?
Ratmjedi
I'm guessing that is a CD that is conducting electricity. I guess it was a CD that a guy didn't like. As for Tesla I have also never heard of him. I am assumging that he is Russian for some reason though.

EDIT- And Ratmjedi. He is from Croatia.

Acrylic
Originally posted by MydnightPsion i dunno...i still dont know who he is He was a scientist who created the Tesla coil, and many other things. I myself believe he invented the lightbulb instead of Edison. And, hes from Croatia. Is that good information.
Boba Rhett
It's a tesla coil lighting up a cd. Tesla coils are one of his inventions. There's a trick you can do to get a cd to light up in a normal microwave but I don't want any of you guys to get in trouble. Tesla is arguably the greatest inventor of the past few centuries. He came up with the concept for an Alternating Current (AC) which we all still use today to recieve power. Thomas Edison even hired him for a while but they had rather different views as to how things should be done and they split. One of the main things was that Edison insisted that we use Direct Current instead of AC. It was no secret that they weren't exactly buddies. "If Edison had a needle to find in a haystack, he would proceed at once with the diligence of the bee to examine straw after straw until he found the object of his search. I was a sorry witness of such doings, knowing that a little theory and calculation would have saved him ninety per cent of his labor.'' He also proposed a way to send power to any location on the world without wires. He once lighted 200 lamps without wires from a distance of 25 miles to show this. Many of his ideas only got as far as his notebooks, sadly. I've never heard anything about him inventing the light bulb though. Tesla coils are resonant transformers. There's six basic parts. The primary transformer, a tank capacitor, the spark gap, the primary coil, the secondary coil and the toroid. The primary transformer charges the capacitor. When the voltage builds up a spark will bridge the spark gap and complete the circuit between the capacitor and the primary coil by shorting out the transformer. A spark ionizes the air, causing it to become much more conductive. All the energy stored in the capacitor is then forced through the primary coil. When the energy is transferred to the primary coil, an electromagnetic field is generated and surrounds the secondary coil. The secondary coil absorbs this energy and magnifies it. The toroid is where this build up of energy is dispersed. A toroid is basically the little ball inside a lightning globe which is, in fact, a small tesla coil. And I live in the US I just learned something new today. Come on Rhett. I want to know about the CD trick. PM me ok? Cause I serisouly want to know how to do it and I'll make sure not to get in trouble.
acdcfanbill
I have been a fan of Tesla for a long time. Its sad to see people as briliant as he was get left out of history.

True, but as is the case for most brilliant minds, their contributions are recognized post-humously, sometimes many generations after their death. mace_sundancer
tesla is the dude that invented those lightning towers the damn russkies use in C&C Red Alert and C&C Red Alert 2 i hate them with a passion...
Kain
using little known history in a game i'll never play. neat-o
C'jais
Ahhh.... brings forth good memories from the Red Alert games.... *goes hunting for Hell march in his MP3 collection* Such a wicked track.
Acrylic
Yea, I really like Tesla's ideas. Like my dad and Rhett said, most of ideas ever left his notebook, or mind. And people, dont base all his inventions on games, its just.....stupidity to think he invented is stuff for war.
Boba Rhett
Well... actually he did propose that several of his inventions be used as weapons if there ever was a war.
ET Warrior
Yes......he also blew up a LOT of things trying to get the air to conduct free electricity for everyone We play with tesla coils in physics sometimes.....they're fun.....word of caution....NEVER.....EVER......touch a tesla coil to your pants zipper.........it hurts..........a lot. I personally think that Van de Graff generators can be more fun to play with than tesla coils though........
Link Antilles
I posted a few things about him along time ago, but I can't remember the thread name they were under. (I believe those posts sparked Rhett's interest.) I'll post a few links once I find them.
Boba Rhett
An electrostatic generator? Besides hair raising what do you guys do witht hem? I think it's just the zipper incident that turned you off of Tesla coils.
ET Warrior
Actually the zipper incident made me laugh a LOT, i still like playing with tesla coils, but it's neat playing with the van de graff, because you can actually throw electrons at people and hear them flying off your finger. Plus if you can get someone to ground out on a metal faucet, have someone holding the van de graff, and then make a chain of people......it's a neat shock that you get......i dunno, they're both k00l
acdcfanbill
Well he did claim to invent the death ray, and earthquake machines... funny how his warehouse/lab mysterously burned down also :S

And also, I know Edison took some of Tesla's inventions.
