Deadmeat_X
this morning I was watching MTV news and I heared something shocking...if what they were saying is true, Bush has threatened the actors and directors that will be present at the Oscar show. If they say anything bad about the war in public, mister Bush will put them on a 'black list', wich means they can be fired or have a hard time finding a job...again, I don't know for sure if it's true but if Bush really plans on doing that, it's a sick action. What ever happened to freedom of speech??? Can he just apply such...cencership? I tought the USA was supposed to be a free country, but if something like this can happen...i dunno. It just seems like something Houssein should do, so if Bush does it too, then who's wrong...? I'm just shocked and confused, how about you? C Shutt
Sounds like bull**** to me. It would be abominable if it was true, but I doubt very much that it is.
NiKo
I dont know if it's true or not, but if it is...well...what can i say? Bush has gone to a new level of 'ass'...
C Shutt
If this were true, I'm sure I'd have heard about it somewhere else. I don't think there's anything to this.
Kjølen
I'm sure it's not true. If it is, I'm guessing President Bush just doesn't want the celebs to convert more and more people against war, I dunno, but Bush seems to really want to do this. poor world. Remi
It was true 50 years ago or so (with the McCarthy hearings). I strongly doubt anything like that could happen now as openly as it did back then.
Darth Eggplant
yes Dean Stockwell of TV show Quantum Leap, and movies Blue Velvet and Dune was on that list. hey just because they tell you, that you live in a free democratic society; don't fall victum to the hype. we have two leaders of their respective countries. one saying axis of evil and the other saying in league with satan. imagine that. not politics, or oil, just two crusaders public bent on having the nations under them follow because they point and can clearly in Black & White say good and evil. Bush has a lot riding on this war now. all of it face. (he will lose face big time) if they do not go to war. they spent tons kicking rocks in afghanistan and with no results or not the ones they wanted. they have spent billions sending troops and making armaments for this war. and on tv and diplomatic efforts to get the UN on side. if they do not go to war, all those axis of evil countries will see that america is just a rabid dog with no teeth. ah the fall of the neon rome. history tells you that rome experienced 500 glorious years. they do not tell you that the last 100 or so were in weakness and fear. it is a long time since the american bi-centennial. (perhaps instead of repeating history) people should learn from it instead.
Rufio
Anyone remember the red scare... people can be blacklisted very easily. However, Bush would not be the one to do it directly, and i doubt that anyone would carry out a blacklist like that, communism was one thing sinse we were so flipping afraid of it, but protesting the war, thats completely tollerable. Also consider the source, MTV isnt exactly a reliable primary source of information about politics.
Mo Goya
You are right MTV is not a reliable source. Besides the tv, mainly the news and talk shows, like to make things seem worse than they are. Just a stolen car could turn into a huge police chase before you know it. Also, freedom of speech is great and all but the government can stretch it as much as they want. If they dont like what people say or do they will find a way to stop it and get their way. Threatening is a great way. I wish this were not the case but, it is. Remember this is not the case for the entire government so dont asume the American government stinks. I mean its better than a communist government. Gabez
Come over to Britain and complain about the weather in loud, stereotypical voices. Then drink tea. And this Bush thing: sounds a bit like Deus Ex, no? Whatever the truth is, I know that some actors did speak out against the war, although I didn’t actually see it on TV. scabb
Freedom of Speech doesn't work at the Oscars or any other private event anyway. Besides, you can hear opinions and news about Iraq in any direction you turn, the Oscars doesn't need a political agenda.
ZBomber
Its probably not true, but it would make sence. I mean, how would you feel if your in Iraq, and celebrities are saying that they don't like you because you are killing peopel for your country? like scabb said, Oscars are a place awards, not a politcal agenda. Gabez
Mm, maybe so, but then if you want to get your opinions across then why not voice them at The Oscars? No-ones going to listen to you otherwise.
scabb
People will and have listened to others elsewhere. It's on the news 24/7, half of the papers consist of Iraq stories, and anyone who gives a shit knows the advantages and disadvantages of the war and has formed their opinion. Moore's little speech hardly helped at all - It was pointless; it just proved that Moore is an attention whore who will oppose the president every chance he gets. I'm not saying it was a bad message, but why not rally anti-war activists together, write articles to liberal newspapers, or simply voice your opinions on the news? Moore or any of the actors have the power to put forward their viewpoints to the public without interrupting a non-political events and making complete asses out of themselves.
