Thats right.

but when i play by myself with bots, its faster than online. so i think if you got a good ping, you play better, not totally because of skill, but also speed helps u too.

Of course its faster than online, there's no lag time between yourself and yourself :).

i need more RAM, would that help? i have 128 megs on win XP...... JK2 loads really slow but game play slows sometimes, but not a lot, think more RAM would help?

Help...yes.... but not your ...ping.

hmmm, what did u upgrade?

i know i need Ram, as i said b4....thats just because of my loading time.

Anyways, my clan says m good, i lose about half of my fights, and win the other half....so i guess thats good 4 around 250 ping, and 128 megs of ram, huh?

man, id be really good if my pc was a little faster!!!

Yeah, I have 768 Megs of ram running with a 900 MHz processor. Hopefully I'll build a new computer this summer. I think a better internet connection would make more of a difference than ram alone. But more ram is good too. :D

Ok, people, RAM and pings are NOT directly related. Don't give people the wrong idea by saying something like "oh well I think a better connection *might* lower your ping more than gobs of RAM will" .... Well...yeah...

All RAM is going to do is take load of your swap file (and in effect your hard drive). Obviously your hard drive is a LOT slower than your RAM. This will make levels load faster and the game start quicker, but its not going to necessarily start dropping your ping. The two simply arent directly related, or even related strongly enough for one to care.

A faster processor, in the case of most people using a modem, should reduce ping a bit more than it will for people on broadband simply because not only are you speeding up your computers turnaround time for packets, but you are allowing the stupid winmodem to work faster. Broadband connections that dont utilize USB modems will be unaffected by a faster CPU or more RAM; all that will do is help your computer itself, and may shave a few ms off your ping time.

But to say that getting a faster processor or more RAM (beyond what is necessary for the system to function properly in whatever environment you have set up) is somehow able to compete with simply getting a broadband internet connection is rediculous.

And not all broadban connections are the same, in fact they usually differ each time you dial in (DSL) or get your IP renewed (cable) as they change routes. Go to the command prompt and do this: tracert http://www.google.com

In fact the route to anywhere is going to be different from just about anywhere else.

This will show you more than anything (on broadband connections) where your lag is coming from. If your ping on cable or DSL is rediculously high, its probably because some router on the path to wherever you are going is dying or overloaded or both.

If you want a lower ping on 56k here are your options in order of effectiveness:

Get broadband.

Get a good non-winmodem.

Find an ISP that has better routing to wherever you are going.

Possibly get a faster processor or more RAM if your computer just reallllly sucks.

Also worth mention if you have serious issues:

Dialup:

Check your phone line for noise.

Cable:

Check to make sure you dont have a gazillion splitters between you and the source of the signal. Splitters cut the signal in half. Also its nice to have 1Ghz splitters if you dont already. Cable also tends to produce problems when the cable line has a hole in it somewhere or its getting water in it. Make sure all your coax is good. You can have the cable company come out and do a line test and see what your signal strength is.

DSL/Cable:

If you are on a LAN and getting a ping of over 15ms to any other machine on the LAN, something is REALLY wrong. Either one of the machines is totally overloaded, a hub is bad, or one of the ethernet lines is screwy.

Unfortunatley, this Jedi is running at 56k... but was able to elimate 75% of my ping problems by reducing the graphics to the lowest possible and lowering the FPS (frames per second.)

Sure, reducing the graphics certainly doesn't look as pretty, but the gameplay is just as exciting!

Good Luck!

k, i know i need more ram, cause it takes like 3-5 mins just to load up the level, and i dont like waiting that long...so i dont play as much because of that.

quick question:

to make things run faster, i made my pagefile really high maybe too high, but i wanted to make sure things would run better

Available Virtual Memory 793.84 MB

Page File Space 965.61 MB

if i lower it will it run better, right now my pc is using 180 MB. with outcast maybe 250 MB (im guessing)

also, if you set your resolution down to 640X480, then play in a window, with your desktop resolution on 1024X768, it doesnt even look like your graphics are effected......maybe cause it makes no diffrence because of the desktop resoultion (not sure, but its not bad...)

  • 2 weeks later...

ok ok. i got a 128 mb of ddr ram on my video card g-force titianium and a 2500 athlon processor with a t1 connection. and i have no problems. i have been doing a little drinking so i will make this quick. this is how u make your connection faster. first press ctrl alt delete and see whats running. then close out everything u dont need. then go look to see how much ram u have. if u got xp 256 is a good idea{ thats just min} i got 512 if u go any faster u will just slow yourself down. the game uses memory and if u dont have enough it will run slow or not at all

 .

Next u might want to turn down spamping or shadowing.

also check your chashing.

then go to display and turn down your resolution down and turn your color to 16 bit. then go into your game and u must also tunr it to 16 bit if u dont it wont function right. then tunr down everything to low and then go to sound { yes sound does slow dont your connection} then turn tat down a little. now go into the game. if u still have "lag" then u might want to try playing at night or getting a faster connection. i hope this helped u guys. oh and play on smaller maps big maps tend to lag more.:p

And dont talk i am trying to tell people how to speed up there computer. you keep messing it up with your 128 mb of ram.. now people are gona think 128 is ok whne in fact ins not. your computer must be slow as **** .. my mac had mor memory than that and i still had problems:mad:

Who cares, we're talking about ping.

And I'd recommend more than 128 for XP if you want to run anything else really effectively. I have 256 in my desktop, 512 in the laptop, and 384 in the file server. The net server is running on 64, but then again its running Gentoo, so... :D

*waves hand*

256 will do fine...

No, really. More than that is nice, but not necessary for smooth operation by most people's standards. The machine I play on has 256, plenty for JK2. BF1942 is another matter entirely...

Another Question:

Having been playing for a while with the graphics minimilised (thats all I could do) I can't now play on the net AT ALL.

All that happens is a message appears on the screen permanently saying 'Connection Interrupted', although actual browsing the web runs smoothly.

Any Ideas?

Cheers.

Its unlikely that the graphics settings are doing anything to your ping. Put them back up and check it against your ping now, it shouldn't be much higher if at all.

The Connection Interrupted could be any number of things. I'll PM you.
