I agree, jail is a bit too much. But the punishment needs to have an effect. Recently, a company in Denmark was charged 15.000 Kr (about 2000 €) - while it's admirable that some people's complains are heard and dealt with, everyone agreed the fine was far too small. 2000€ is peanuts compared to how much money they make with spamming. And those that complained were just the visible tip of the iceberg, the incredibly huge majority did not complain, yet were still harassed. The fine needs to be enormous. It should be an incentive to make them rethink what they're doing, and hopefully make them stop.
Cosmos Jack
How about this.......... Fined them and put them in jail tell their court date. Their court date just happens to be 6 months away. Have their bail set at their net worth and than at their court hearing fine them their net worth. I think that is a good idea the fine is based on how much money they have.. Mr. Furious
I get popups on my screen when i'm playing jk2 (my aol is running in the background) i'll be fighting someone and in the middle of the duel a grey box will pop up right in the middle of the screen......then i get killed.......cos i couln't see my opponent......then i cry.........and punch my desk.......and hate the internet.........and go for coffee instead.....then come back and do it all again.......seriously though, banners are ok, but i reckon popups should be banned. if we wanted to buy what they were selling we would look for it wouldn't we? plus i think they slow down your connection to web-pages. A good punishment would be to get the people responsible for popups, sit them in front of a p.c, fire a million popups at them and make em sit there without sleep or food or drink until they have closed em' all! Joetheeskimo
I agree with all of you. I can barely concentrate with all the pop-ups! And when I get of the internet there are like 50 minimized windows that are all pop-ups.

munik
While I don't really like the idea of spam that much, I want to point out a few things. A lot of random spam email is sent to free email accounts (hotmail, yahoo mail, etc.) because spammers know lots of people use those. Also, you have absolutely zero right to complain about spammers on your free email account. If you cannot afford your own address, or your own mail server, etc, and choose to use someone else's for free...well, you get what you pay for. Also, I don't know about other people, but I have about three email accounts provided to me by my isp and they each have recieved a whopping amount of zero random spam emails. If @hotmail.com is somewhere in your email address, you might as well replace it with @spam.me.please. If you do not use a free email service, and still recieve spam, it is because you have given your address out to a less then honorable source. These people either spam you themselves, or sell your address. This is exactly how telemarketers operate. Except with telemarketers, you can actually make them stop. A simple solution here is to either not give out your email address to everyone who asks for it, or have a seperate email account that you use in those situations that you must give an email address. Pop ups are annoying, yes, but easily avoided. All it takes is a simple understanding of what a DNS server is and what it does, and what your hosts file is (for all you windows users). You can avoid banner ads in this fashion as well. If you choose to use cookies to make web browsing easier and faster, then you also choose to accept the negative side of it as well. If you install a program that also has spyware/adware, then it is a choice you make. Point is, you can avoid all this spam if you wanted it. You just have to put in the effort, or invest the time to gain knowledge on how to avoid it. I don't get spam in my personal email account. I don't get pop-ups. I don't see banner ads. It costs me absolutely nothing to do this, and about two minutes of my time. I also don't get calls from telemarketers, as I have taken the time to find out how to prevent them. Wudan
Funny how many people are annoyed with SPAM but don't take the time to fight it. Problem with the laws are that they are not enforceable. If I am in Virginia and I use an open relay SMTP in some other country, the world is my oyster, the Virginian authorities can't do a thing to me. You guys need to read up on anti-SPAM theory. Ultimately, even if you know how to fight spam, there's IP spoofing that blocks the **** of justice from toppling the SPAM empire. The responsibility is up to the individual then. You must NEVER give your email out to people who give THEIR email out, and you must always be diligent in keeping your email address sanctified! Wudan
Originally posted by joetheeskimo5 Thnx for the tip hehe Which part, the open relay part? There's plenty of pro-SPAM organizations which would give you this info, the answer fot the mail admin is to 'close' your relay and turn up SMTP AUTH, so only the users of your mail system can send email out on it. This is better than systems which use reverse PTR lookups because those can be tricked into SMTP relay through IP spoofing. Nothing beats SMTP AUTH that I've seen. If you are a spammer, go ahead and use an open relay, eventually they either get blocked off by black lists and you won't be able to send, or they close their relay in some shape or fashion, or force the SPAMer to commit bigger crimes of hacking and IP spoofing. munik
Originally posted by wudan If you are a spammer, go ahead and use an open relay, eventually they either get blocked off by black lists... Open relays will definately get on a black list. If you spam, then that's not really a tip, common knowledge I suppose. But the blacklist is more of a punishment against those who have open relays, not against spammers who use them. If someone is abusing a flaw in your mail server, is it justified to blacklist you? If someone came into my house without my knowledge or consent, and used my phone to make soliciting calls, would it be right to add my phone number to a list of numbers that should be blocked, just because I forgot to lock my doors? Rogue Ace
Get rid of spam! Anyway I just wanted to post because at least once in the thread ICQ spam was mentioned. It's really easy to avoid ICQ spam (or seems to be). I always keep my ICQ on invisible anyway and I either rarely or never get spam on ICQ. The few times I've gone visible I know I've gotten spam while online and if I've ever gotten it otherwise it was while I was offline and was there when I got back on. So there's a hint: hide from spam .
C'jais
On the topic of lawsuits, here's a silly one: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/2951486.stm Basically, McDonald's are suing a food critic for expressing his opinion.
ShockV1.89
I use a dummy email address for anything I suspect might have spam associated with it. I only use my real one for friends and any online ordering I might do, and even then, I only use the real one with reputable companies.
BongoBob
Hmmmm...lets see...I like the idea of taking away their comps, having the fine reflect their amount of money,oh...can't forget about the 14 inch anal rape by Big Bubba LOMFL I had the same problems as Mr Furious, but if he has AOL(like me:( )then all you have to do is go to pop up controls, and look around for the "other pop up" info. I now hav not gotten anymore of those damn grey boxes since...now if I could just get broadband, the jkiimp experience would be complete... Pop-ups - annoying like hell, but since it is so very, very cheap it only takes a few suckers to make it worth the advertiser's while as another poster pointed out. Should be outlawed. Spammail - Ought to be avoided through the same means as the stickers on RL mailboxes, and as easily. Links popping up on your Desktop and in your Browser Favorites - Direct invasion of privacy. It's the equivalent of a man walking into your house/flat and putting up posters on your walls, and if you tear them down he'll be back the next day with new ones. Yes, my system is connected to the internet and therefor connected to all kinds of information traffic, but my flat is also connected to the community road/street system, but that gives no one any right to walk into my home unless I invite them. It's a violation of constitutionally protected privacy - ought to damn well be enforced too.
Cosmos Jack
"Jubatus" I think you pretty much summed it up that's the way I feel about it. Anyway... has anyone ever been to Hawaii? I lost count on how many times I have walked down the street while being bombarded with people trying tell sell me trips, dinners, and crap. Kind of like logging on the net and getting spamed. Hell half the time they would ignore me, because I was white and they were trying to sell stuff to just Japanese people. Which I didn't mined. Though one time I got harassed by a cute little British girl to take a tour of Hawaii. I didn't mined that.
