Silent_Thunder
Just wondering how many fellow martial artists we have on these boards. If you've done any martial art in the past, or are doing one currently please post here, and state where you train/ed. I'm kind of new to martial arts myself: I've currently been studying Kung Fu San Soo for about a year and a half down in southern Oregon (Grants Pass to be specific). I'm about 85% through my yellow belt so I'll be getting my green belt soon. Also, I plan on trying Tradition Wing Chun Kung Fu for atleast 2 years as well (but having actually started that yet) before I decide to stick with it or not. So, are there any martial artists or former martial artists on these boards? Any Jujitsu, Shoalin Kung Fu, Wing Chun, Teakwondo, Karate, Judo, and other art practicioners here? I'd really like to know, please post what martial art you study and what its all about, I'm curious! [PS, incase you're wondering what both arts I mentioned were, I'll give you a brief description of San Soo and Wing Chun. Kung Fu San Soo focuses on non-sport, street fighting self defence. It has a lot of throws, blocks, counters, leverages, and some unique kinds of strikes (like one knuckle punchs), so it's pretty well rounded. It was created to be learned quickly and to be effective quickly. However, San Soo's biggest flaw is that it's often taught with very little training against an uncooperative opponent... making defense slightly at a disadvantage. But as a defense against a suddenly violent confrontation against a dangerous non martial artist who is wielding a deadly weapon where you must strike with lethal force it can be effective. It was created in southern China by monks several thousand years ago and was brought to the USA by Jimmy Woo. From what I've learned about Wing Chun it is a highly effective defense oriented martial art. They practice with alot of sparring confrontations which helps teach some defense against an unwilling opponent. Also, Wing Chun teaches thier students to develope extreemly intune senses while in combat, allowing for more forsight to see what the attacker is about to do. But as I haven't really studied it enugh to say anything about it's effectiveness I can't really speak further about it. Wing Chun was prefected by a Chinese nun about 300 years ago, with similiar principles as San Soo.]

HertogJan
Well... yay I have a green belt for Judo But I got it a long long time ago back when I was a kid, so I don't think you'll have to fear me... And Judo is sooo defensive, that it's only of use when you are really really good and you opponent is cooperating You have to hold them in a certain way to execute a move... nova_wolf
Hit Orange in Judo, but got bored. Breakfalls where the more interesting bits of it in the end!
Silent_Thunder
Well, Judo is used more for sport than anything else (not that that's bad! but it's not a self defense), so it's not surprising that you'd get bored with it if you didn't take it to it's highest level for competeting. I tried doing some Judo myself (1 class, hehe), but I was beaten before I could even begin the traing (constant running around in circles, push ups with hands slapping together, etc). Luckily in San Soo all you have to do is stretches, and horse stances to get ready . Yay for lazy man's martial arts . Though to be fair you do fall down and get back up alot in San Soo... which gets tiring.

Pink Monkey
Martial arts? Unnecessary if you are followed about by a flock of rabid attack bats from Hades who are compelled by fell dominion to obey your random whim... Phasers can also be amusing when used on an assailant. vlr

Silent_Thunder
"I am also verry good in knife stabbing and street figthing... since u dont need any martial arts to survive" Just curious, but I hope you didn't mean you actually stabbed people with a (real) knife to know that for sure . And Martial arts aren't necissary to survive... you only have a .25% chance of getting into a combat situation at the age of 20, and it only lowers as you get older. But if you know extentsive knowledge of a good street fighting martial art than in a hand to hand combat with an unskilled adversary you'd be at a huge advantage. Fighting against knife wielding opponents (and multiple attackers) tip the odds in their favor, but they can still be delt with with an effective martial art. Jeet Kune Do... isn't that an off spring of Wing Chun? (I may be mistaken). Can you briefly explain what the art is focused around, and how you fight? I've heard of Mantis... It's an interesting concept. Using your apparant weakness to your advantage, buy luring your opponent in. But it seems like theirs alot of unnecissary aspects of mantis, as is inherent of alot of animal mimicking arts. But not everyone learns an art of the same reason, ofcourse. Which Shaolin fist style where you thinking about learning? So far I've only heard of Shaolin LongFist. A 4th degree black belt in Shaolin long fist just joined the Kung Fu San Soo class I go to, so I get to see alot of that art. Its similiar to San Soo, except with alot more showy, flowery movements, and not quite as brutal. What level are you in Karate Agen? Is your weapon of choice the all mighty spoon? Jeet Kune Do is the style Bruce Lee developed, its preatty much striking and defending ain a single flow. Mantis, well Mantis is something id liek to learn for fun because its hand movements and speed is amazing. Shaolin Fist, i want to learn this because it seems like an effective movement, im not sure but i think Eagles Claw is a type which is the one im interested in, though you have to be limber to do that. Silent_Thunder
Ah, I see, sounds interesting . I'm personally not fast enough (atleast not yet) to be good at Mantis. I prefer arts where your reflexes come from sensitivity, and not directy speed (kind of like Chi Sao). If you like the way the Shaolin fist arts fight than maybe you might want to check out Kung Fu San Soo. It's also a Shaolin art infact. Its very direct, whith less deflection and evades (deflections or evades in San Soo are alittle different). It's pretty brutal and aggresive. Bob Gnarly
oooh, im not planing on getting into any fights, im just trying to do this to stay in shape, the fast movement speeds up my addrenalen and makes me sweet, and Shaolin seems preatty brutal so the force i put into the punchs would help me stretch my mucsles
