Can it be? A decent "Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy" movie in the works?

Variety reports this morning that British directing/producing team Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith will be let loose on the film as their feature debut.

Seems the delay was due to problems with getting the script into better shape, according to Spyglass Films partner Roger Birnbaum who first bought the book's film rights. 'We finally cracked the story,' he explains, 'and hired these clever English fellows to make sure that the picture is visually inventive and funny and accessible to contemporary audiences while still connected to the book Douglas wrote almost 25 years ago.'

The whole Hitchhiker project has been in limbo since writer Adams died whilst in California doing initial script revisions. It's also done the rounds in Hollywood, being turned down by Spike Jonze who apparently directed Birnbaum to the doors of Jennings and Goldsmith. But better late than never – the late Adams will have an exec-producer credit when the film finally comes out.

This can turn out to be a really great movie, thanks to the genius of Douglas Adams. I can't wait!!

The TV mini-series was pretty good, but it was made back in the 80s, so the special effects and such were pretty sub-par by modern standards.

A HHGTTG movie made with modern CGI and special effects would be downright fabulous! :D

Kudos to Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith!

Somehow, I don't think a film nowadays of a classic like HHGTTG would be very successful. Humour and plot is the most important aspect of this story, and somehow I think that the producers of the movie will get too wrapped up in the special effects and things. The TV show was great, because it was so corny, which reflected the story completely. Everything was pretty basic in terms of visuals. Because it didn't need to be elaborate. It wasn't supposed to look completely real.

Anyways, I don't wanna bring everyone's hopes down. This is just my personal opinion:)

i thought HHGTTG suited the cheap SFX, a lot like red dwarf and doctor who. Red dwarf got worse as the effects got better (although it still rocked:D ) and that US funded Doctor Who film was a complete joke.

Still, it will depend a lot on the directors, and how much the US studios interfere.... i would have never thought they could do LOTR well either....

What i want is a Discworld film.... now that would rock, and the SFX could be awesome. :D

It will be nice if they can pull it off. But really, the actual story and dialog in the HHGG books and radio shows wasn't the funniest parts. All the humor was in the narration, which is hard to pull off in a movie to that extent. You can do that on the radio or on the TV mini-series, but cutting away from the action every couple of minutes to do an extended narrative piece in a two-hour movie may not work. I suspect that was what the problem was with the script all this time.

Still... it would be nice to see a CGI-altered actor playing Zaphod.

I have some reservations about this whole idea. The TV series worked, basically because it took both The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy and it's sequel The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe and managed to explore most (but not all) of the situations therein because of the extended time that a series bestows. Even assuming they stick with the first book alone, I think it will be difficult for them to cram the whole thing into a 2-hour movie successfully.

I actually fear that they will turn it into a special FX bonanza...and totally miss the point of the story, which even in the TV show was never about the effects, but about the ridiculous (and hilarious) situations. The TV show is an absolute classic, IMHO, and they did a good job to pull it off on the screen when HHGTTG was originally broadcast on radio.

*makes a mental note to get the TV series of HHGTTG on DVD*
