Alia
Q: Can girls play games? Dam' right they can, but by this time I'm just reiterating what has been said already. (Needless ramble about how girls can play whatever they want to, and would do well by doing that.) 2: Why are CS players acting like sexually fustrated retards? In the off-chance that they always treat girls that way, perhaps there is not any reason to be surprised. Thinking in 2D? How very strange. But how can thoughts be in one dimension or another? How do guys think? DO guys think? Now I'm all confused.
Remi
Seriously, the "thinking in 2D" thing comes from PC Zone, which isn't the most reputable gaming source, let alone gender analysis.
C Shutt
Ah, but its lineage can be traced directly to the console gaming magazine "Game Zone", which was one of the best game magazines ever published. Huh? Topic? Sorry.
Guybrush122
At any rate, its supposedly true that women think in 2D... ...I forgot where I heard that, though. Definately wasn't PC Zone or any game mag...
Joshi
It has been statistically proven that males have a better spacial awareness than girls. And I heard that from both my maths and statistics teachers (and no, they are not one and the same). But yes, somehow a Z axis is easier for a male to contemplate than a female. Alia
I wonder if other girls also think like this: Walk to computer Look at computer "Nice computer." Use computer "Hmm, it has a cute Winnie the Pooh background." Look at guilty sibling Push guilty sibling GS: "OW! I'm telling! Moooooom!" Or is it just me... Ariana
Regarding the 2D and spatial awareness: Statistically, this may be true, but I'm sure that it may not be true of individual women. I think I'm pretty good at spatial thinking, which is why Mom always asks me to put together the Sauder furniture kits she buys for the house, because she has a harder time making sense out of the directions, and I can read them upside down and backwards. I also do very well in 3D games, working in POV-Ray (a 3D imaging program that uses text-only; you have to be able to think in the x, y, and z axes to be able to figure it out the codes and values necessary), and such things like that. Granted, I've never had a scientific analysis of my thought process, but I imagine I'm as good as the average guy at that sort of thing. It may also have to do with personal intelligence, to a degree, and the subjects the woman in question is knowledgeable about, and the way she's trained her mind. Short answer? Don't assume that because you're a guy you're naturally better at math, video games, or "upper body strength", or anything else statistics might say guys are better at, than a woman is. On a case-by-case basis, you may find out that she could kick your butt from here to next Tuesday and back.

Actually, I believe women are the ones that are "statistically" better at math than men. Although, when I was in Elementary School and the girls used to make fun of the guys...this rhyme they chanted always made me laugh, "Girls go to college to get more knowledge, boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider." Ah, youth.
Redwing
"There are lies, damned lies and statistics." -Mark Twain. I've heard the same thing about "girls think in 2-D", and it's true on an insane level with a certain girl friend of mine. But with every other person that I know and have had opportunity to test that, it hasn't been at all true...just goes to show.

Maybe that's why they're more attracted to 2-D platformers and semi-2-d stuff like the sims? Just guessing... And if they can (which I'm sure of), why don't you see them more often? Can men play games? There's your answers there. The reason why there arn't more female gamers is that non-gaming females wern't introduced to it whilst they were young. Their brothers might have been, but girls arn't usually given a Playstation, or whatever, for Christmas and told to go play it. Boys are. It's mostly down to that. I'm completely greatful to my dad, uncle and cousins for getting me into gaming and never ever discriminating against me because I am a female who enjoys computer games. A lot of people associate games with being toys and for children, which we all know simply isn't true. Games are like films, there are ones for children, ones for adults and games for everyone. Emma
Originally posted by SamNMax Sure. Girls can play games. They just can't review them. There are plenty of good female games journalists with Rhianna Pratchett who writes for PC Zone (Yes, she is the daughter of Terry) springing immediately to mind. The only reason there arn't more is because, for the moment, female gamers are very much in the minority.
Yufster
I just typed a BUNCH OF CRAP, and deleted it by mistake. Okay here goes. We're doing computers this year in school, and for the first time my classmates saw me type. It's an all girls school, so I never really talk about computers. MY computers!!! Anyway, they saw the speed I could type. REALLY DAMN FAST. And Seana stares in disbelief, and then goes, "Oh my god. You freak! You nerd!" and that was her exact wording. I mean wait. Most people in school know me, from first year to sixth year (or seventh grade to 12th grade for americans) and like me. I'm popular among guys, and I've had two serious boyfriends, one of whom still STALKS ME. I have loads of friends, I get good grades, I love art, and can compose pretty simple music... And I can use computers. Bang goes everything else, I must be a nerd. See, girls who risk liking computers and games, risk being outcast by females AND rejected by males. It's not all guys. Out of my two boyfriends, one celebrated the fact I could whoop his ass at games and was literally proud of his girlfriend. The other kept insisting I was crap. So I beat him a few times, and he still said I was crap, and I was "mashing buttons". So I played a different game and still he insisted it was a fluke. So I broke up with him about a week later. here's the thing; Most girls would love games if only they got the chance to play them. I am starting a computer club in school, where I'm gonna teach basic programming and art skills, and then we're gonna team up to piece together a video game, using AGS. The langauge is similar to C++. You would think in an all girl school that they would have no interest, but 88 pupils have signed up. 88 out of 800. At first they were reluctant, but after one girl would sign up, another girl would come forward to sign up too. They looked nervous. And they kept glancing at their classmates to see what their reaction was. It was so sad. Girls are holding girls back just as much as guys are. Their first homework is to play MI2. But seriously the reason I love games, is because I used to get all those PC Gamer magazines from 1990+... when they used to be GOOD... Remember the demo diskettes? I loved them. I'd read all the scathing and sarcastic articles, and play all the demoes, and look at all the pictures, and want all the games. Everything was a lot less proffesional back then, and it all seemed more just for the fun. But I still grew up loving the world around Games and the Gaming Industry, and the people in it. Hell, I idolised Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman and Ron Gilbert as a kid, where other kids idolised Take That. I'm not even JOKING. But, I ramble. What I'm saying is, Girls are just as unaccepting of Girl Gamers as Guys, and it annoys me that so many females, especially those that believe they're smarter than males, are so narrow minded. Guybrush122
Yufster...agreed. However, I have one thing to say......girls who can play video games MAKE ME RANDY!! I'm not joking. My dream girl is a girl who isn't an airhead (omg, lyk, dats s0o0o totly nawt kewl), is intelligent etc.etc.etc. ..... AND PLAYS VIDEO GAMES wooo! keep on doing what you're doing, it's bound to get guys attention.... ....and if the men insist you mash buttons and get lucky. just wH00p th31r 4$$0rZ, and show 'em whos boss. Yufster
I also like climbing trees and making tree houses. ROTFL ppl at AGS thought that was amazing. But seriously, this one time, I made a treehouse, and it wasn't even funny because I cut my leg on a nail, jumping down the tree. I still have a little scar from that. But even more seriously yet, that is just so, like, kewl!!!! Omg!
Deadmeat_X
Wow, 1.5 months later my lil' topic is still active... *feels proud* Anyway, just popping in to say hi. Sorry I haven't posted anything the last month. I'm gonna be a real FAQ writer, and that stuff takes up a lot of my time. It's worth it though. Anyway, next two weeks will be pretty quiet in the FAQ-business (OMG, I sound like such a dork), so I guess I'll be here a little more often. And just two more weeks until Worms 3D comes out! Woooooooooohooooooooooo!!! Anyone wanna make a clan with me? :D:D Cya later

Anomonous Guy
Well in answer to the original question, they can and do play games... I know a fair few who do, just not games like Counterstrike, coz they r what u wud call 'laddish' games, i dont really like that type of game either tho. But yeah i know alot of girls who like adventure games and puzzle games, i think girls generally prefer that type of game, oh yea and Sim games... Just i dont thnink shhot 'em ups n strategy games appeal to girls, same as they dont really appeal to me.. maybe i am a girl lol...
