  1. Does VGA disk version have the art upgrade for the close-up portraits?
  2. It's hard to say with some thematic elements, but I hesitate to talk about them while a poster here is reading Tides for the first time.
  3. If you see a verb coin on the ground and try to Pick Up Verb Coin, Look At Verb Coin, or Bite Verb Coin, will your game crash?
  4. But hey, if you're not playing Bernard? It's nice to have the phone puzzle to replace "get caught by Edna then sneak someone else through then get caught by Edna again".
  5. EGA has its plus sides, definitely. And I appreciate things about the close-up pictures like Estevan's tragic face and Carla's hair continuity, and how Purcell made them resemble PotC animatronic guys. The loss of the stump joke is a historic tragedy. A lot of bugs in VGA are ridiculous. But I still love the VGA closeup art more, and the inventory icons. The VGA sprites link me visually to the MI2 sprites for Elaine, Voodoo Lady, Stan, and dream Guybrush. And even though Stan's ship theme is hated by most of you... when I play through EGA again and get to it, I might just play the music on my phone. That being said, the thread was made to praise EGA's strengths over what VGA lost. I just had to contribute anyway!
  6. The same room as: I've heard a lot of guys talking about Marley's bust. This must be it.
  7. I mean... I sort of read Thimbleweed Park as a Maniac Mansion sequel. Thimbleweed actually made me change how I play Maniac Mansion. Previously I imprisoned or ignored Dave the full game. After talking to Sandy and him so pleasantly in Thimbleweed, I like to use him more. I pretend that he's the only character who can use the excercise machine; that gets it done!
  8. Curse of Monkey Island Remastered updates the verb coin with a "kick" verb. Using "kick" on anything causes Guybrush to injure himself, holding the damaged leg while hopping on the other for a short animation.
  9. I'm going to repeat what I've been fixated on this year: haggling against Stan is so much more amazing than I ever knew while growing up. If you're getting the Sea Monkey for 5000 with no extras, then you're letting Stan win. Get those Porthole Defoggers at least; you pay for them anyway! Speedrun All Swag: Walk away twice, offer 2000, offer 5000 twice Speedrun Don't Walk Away: Reject 5 extras (technically only the 4 after defoggers matter), offer 2000, offer 5000. Best Value: 3000, porthole defoggers, another extra of your choice (get the elevator; it sounds expensive!) Ultimate Talkie Edition: Get to hear Stan say his "two thousand LOUSY pieces of eight" line
  10. I never thought about it in terms of continuity, but talking to Weird Ed's computer does make Bernard say it has a Commodore 64's processing power!
  11. A reminder that every single image of the Curse verb coin you find online, whether a screenshot or an actual physical coin on Etsy, is going to have the hand closed into a fist - as if you are about to click on Use.
  12. I find myself fixating on Jeff's portraits in the character select screens. Release #1: "I do not want to be here." Release #2: (resigned smile) Release #3: "Okay. I'm ready now."
  13. Proof that Guybrush is fully shaved and wearing a wig in MI2! The wig-flipping scenes are more than cartoonish joking! In the past, I was referred to the iconic scene of Largo holding Guybrush upside-down without any wig falling off. But behold! Bob shows us here that certain things such as heads and wigs can detach at certain upright moments (e.g. surprise) while still remaining attached from an upside-down position. Bald MI2Guybrush, so there. 😛
  14. I still think Guybrush is eavesdropping. If I remember correctly, Ron also gave us "blah blah blah" in MI2 during the Booty Mansion party, as Guybrush listened to guests long enough. Of course, MI2 wasn't voiced when Ron made it. The special edition followed the pattern we see in other games: quiet grumblings, ellipses, and the occasional phrase. That's in a LOT of Lucasarts games when the main character is doing stuff while a background conversation happens. This version substitutes "blah blah" instead of quiet grumblings.
  15. The re-use of character models in Tales of Monkey Island was not a system constraint but a deliberate homage to the replicated animatronics in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean rides: https://earzup-podcast.com/2021/03/the-many-faces-of-disneylands-pirates-of-the-caribbean-part-1/ This opinion is unpopular because it is objectively wrong. But maybe you can start circulating it anyway.
  16. I look forward to playing as Elaine for a brief moment on the Swords path, getting Guybrush ready to dive.
  17. The world itself is on the verge of destruction because the number of pirates has been gradually decreasing, resulting in global climate change. Surprise: Monkey Island has always taken place in modern times, in a reality where the world's governments have coordinated (as the Mêlée Island Chamber of Commerce) to avoid environmental disaster by re-introducing pirates to various areas of the world. The problem now, is that no new pirates have been created for decades because the Three Trials on Mêlée Island were disrupted. 1) The Swordmaster disappeared for several years, and upon returning she refused to fight new recruits. The situation is even more dire with her election as governor, as the Mêlée Island charter expressly forbids the governor from interacting with the swordplay or treasure huntery trials, and a bureaucratic oversight made the position of Swordmaster a lifelong term. 2) The Idol of Many Hands disappeared at about the same time as the Swordmaster. Rumors are unclear as to whether it was last seen with the Formerly Very Important Looking Pirates, or with Guybrush when he first left Mêlée. The Three Trials bylaws have no stipulation for the Idol of Many Hands being lost or removed from the island, so the true idol must be located and stolen, so that someone can break into the governor's mansion and return it to its proper pedestal for future generations of pirates to steal. 3) Swag experts have finally agreed: the Legendary Lost Treasure of Mêlée Island has been reduced to nothing. It's probably been that way for years. To provide for the future, a new hoard of treasure needs to be buried. All of the old maps were also made obsolete by the most recent update, so a new burial location must be found with new maps drafted and distributed. 4) Four? Yes, each new pirate must drink grog with the current Pirate Leaders. A grog source must be found, and the sitting Pirate Leaders must be made amenable to their key role in the three trials. When this is over, the world can be saved and Guybrush can finally be certified as a pirate. EDIT: This is all completely unrelated to the Secret of Monkey Island. The Secret of Monkey Island is that the Giant Monkey Head has holes in its ears and nose that have secret buttons to open the mouth.
  18. When you realize: at the end of MI1, even after Guybrush lands and is pulled out, the grog machine does not look as damaged as it is during MI2. Clearly something else damaged it, bwa ha ha. /joke
  19. I see the Voodoo Lady as a kindred spirit with the writers and designers. She needs a protagonist and an antagonist to keep fighting each other, because this creates a narrative, and without a narrative the world of Monkey Island wouldn't have any sequels and would disappear. "Have you ever heard the name Bobbin Threadbare?" as MI3 might put it. Besides, she's been lying to Guybrush ever since MI2, when she "reminded" him that she made the root beer for him, and something made Guybrush "remember" that yes she did. Even though it never happened.
  20. Herman and his Captain sailed together to find the Secret of Monkey Island. I'm pretty sure they found it.
  21. I thought we agreed Chris Pratt is the definitive voice of Guybrush?
  22. I think the silence was maintained on the CD version, with the exception of Stan's?
