Return to Monkey Island [SPOILER FREE]
ThunderPeel2001 replied to ThunderPeel2001's topic in General Discussion
"that also means you don't really like it" How do you like something but not "really" like it? I have no idea what that means... you either enjoy something or you don't. The reason you enjoy something doesn't matter... even if it's nostalgia or sentimentality. You enjoy it! And that should be enough for anyone, including you! -

What I said has got nothing to do with how YOU like something... -
You show it to Elaine and she says something. Also you can take the cook's photo in the Scumm Bar kitchen. No idea what either of those extraneous images are used for.

LeShip... Island

Yes, I think you hit the nail on the head here. They definitely felt less "real" (if that's the right way to put it) than Scabb, Phatt and Booty. Yeah, I wonder what would have happened if Guybrush could acquiesce to Boybrush's demands for a satisfying conclusion on the bench. And then we cut back and finish the story properly. I mean The Princess Bride did this and it worked beautifully... you can have your cake and eat it sometimes.

I guess the "original" secret was always going to be the plaque... but they had a second surprise for the player if they kept playing: The note. But they felt that was too 4th wall breaking even for MI, so they switched it for a joke secret... it literally being a t-shirt. However I wonder if Guybrush originally tore up the note or something? And the post-credits scene is him piecing it back together again? It's intriguing.

Just watch ep 1... Slow burn doesn't cover it. But it has gotten under my skin a bit

Return to Monkey Island [SPOILER FREE]

I wasn't directly addressing you, but anyway, I don't believe anyone can ever be sure they're not wearing rose tinted glasses. You kind of has to listen to those around you. If everyone is saying, "this isn't fun" I think have to accept that maybe something hasn't aged as well you think it has. (I had this experience with The Goonies, which is why I used it an example -- I think it's great fun!) As for BTTF2 being the best of the trilogy, and BTTF3 being reassessed... the prevailing critical sentiment has always been that BTTF2 is the weakest. So nothing has changed. As for my opinion, I will say this for 2... it's FUN. It's the cast (brilliant performers with great chemistry), excellent direction (Zemekis in his prime) and top-notch production values (it's always a fun world to inhabit) that make a weak story work. -
Spoiler-Filled Interview with Ron Gilbert and Laura Cress

Once again, this all points to what Bill Tiller told the world in 2003, being true: Although Ron and Dave would say that the ending of MI2 is a different ending (because, OK, technically it is -- the game doesn't just reveal it's all a dream, it adds a bunch of other things to murky the water) but for most of us a huge part of that ending was the amusement park reveal. And that is clearly what Tiller was referring to, if you ask me. -

Prepare yourself for some serious BTTF2 bashing (this should probably be moved to the "Unpopular Opinions" thread)... Back to the Future: Part II, like Temple of Doom or The Goonies, can only be truly loved with rose-tinted glasses. BTTF2 is just a cash-in on the first film. It has no heart and, without any obvious reason for being, it coasts along on the charm of its cast, skill of its director, production values, and little else. You can imagine the Zemekis and Gale, lacking any sort of direction for a story, starting with a list of fan-favourite scenes from the first film: Let's do the scene with Lorraine in the dark again! Let's do the scene in the cafe where Marty punches Biff again! Let's do the skateboard scene again! Let's do the Enchantment Under the Sea scene again! Let's do the Biff gets covered in manure scene again! And then stringing together a story that would fit these scenes in. But... having run out of things to fan service with, they were forced to try something else with BTTF3... and they came up with an original story. And it's so much better. It's not BTTF, but it's a far superior film. You care about Doc getting Clara... You care about George getting Elaine... you don't care about Marty getting the Almanac. -
This is what the "Docs" end sting looks like: If you want to see it for yourself, plop this file next to the other "Weird.ggpack" files in your game directory, and then run Guybrush back up the stairs before getting the key: http://www.thunderpeel2001.com/Weird.ggpack6 It is literally just this image, however. I don't know if there's more to be found in order to trigger it to do anything else.

Welcome to the club! Hard to believe that Trivia Overlord is the rarest achievement I own, though! -
Do you remember what GGPack that image was in? Edit: Nevermind, it was 5a 👍

MonkeyPack v0.3 - ReMI unpacker & repacker
ThunderPeel2001 replied to Didero's topic in General Discussion
No, I tried that and it didn't work for me. This tool converts them to PNG though: https://github.com/jonsth131/ggtool -
How is saving Wally "time limited" though? I think this is what it's likely to be. I wonder if that "Docs" stinger was indeed related to finding the note in the treasure chest, though. Is there a related anim file? If so it should be easy to trigger it by renaming the file and then triggering the renamed ending.

Isn't there only 10 + drown? That's what Ron said and what's listed in the Mojo guide?

I wonder if Guybrush is crumpling up Ron and Dave's note? 🤪

Spoiler-Filled Interview with Ron Gilbert and Laura Cress

Not sure I agree with that exactly Although I guess it depends if you're seeing them as reality or imaginings. Have you finished the game, then? -
Spoiler-Filled Interview with Ron Gilbert and Laura Cress
ThunderPeel2001 replied to demone's topic in General Discussion
Well MI2 was sort of shy about it, if you think about it. It revealed the theme park, but added the twist that it was a spell. I asked Ron and Dave specifically if MI2 was always the ending on Twitter, and they both said no. And Ron has alway thought of MI2's ending as something else. (As he describes in his PAX talk.) I think MI2's ending took an ingredient of the original "secret", but turned it into something different (although to us, as outsiders, it feels very similar). Until the game literally said, "yes, you're in a theme park", the secret wasn't fully revealed. My question for Ron would be: What was your explanation for having Guybrush turn into a child when you wrote MI2? Did you have one, or was it just a quirky way to end the game? -
Guybrush and Elaine's relationship

Well, the twist was, of course, that she wasn't a damsel in distress in SOMI. -
Guybrush and Elaine's relationship

Yep, but then she does also spend time talking to other characters... and in her fantasy she's cleaning up the mess GB has left behind and rescuing him. -

As this is written in Python 3, is a MacOS version easy to create? -
Yep, although Strange that her cauldron is back in that scene.
