  1. You and I have a very different relationship to spoilers. I *hate* waiting to get to a point in the story where I don't know what's going to happen. Here's a serious exercise I think everyone should do: When was the last time something totally blew you away? Like, one of those incredibly rare moments where you walked out the cinema, or finished a game, and went "HOLY SHIT - THAT WAS INCREDIBLE". I don't mean, "Wow, that was good." I mean, "I'll never forget this moment" level reaction. And then: When was the last time you were seriously *disappointed* in something? When you walked out and went, "What the hell was all the fuss about?" or "I don't understand why everyone loved that?" Again, I can think of only a couple of hugely disappointing moments in my life along those lines. Now: When I think of both of these examples from my life, they directly relate to spoilers... First example: Seeing FIGHT CLUB for the first time, knowing LESS THAN NOTHING about it. Seriously, it was opening night and I was one of 8 people in the cinema. All I knew was the title. I hadn't even seen the poster. Second example: Seeing JURASSIC PARK after watching every trailer, sneak peak, interview, EPK, advert, behind-the-scenes video you can imagine. I've NEVER regretted not knowing anything before going (unless there was some pre-required knowledge you were supposed to know, natch). But I've SOMETIMES regretted knowing spoilers. Anyways, as you can see, I've thought about this a lot 😅
  2. I'm sure Jake has plans to finish off and release the remaining parts any day now!

  4. This is quite an interesting point, actually. I've had Steam for 14 years... None of the physical PC games I bought 14 years ago can even by played on any modern machine I own 😕 (Interestingly, just went down a Steam rabbit hole: The first game I ever purchased was Portal in 2008. And I've spent £1,100 with Steam in all that time... which isn't as bad as I'd have feared.)
  5. In case you were wondering: Yes, the "other" ReMI thread DOES include things you probably don't want to see. I just popped my head in and saw a sentence from Dave Grossman I didn't want to read about Guybrush, his motivations and what the theme of the game is. Thankfully I managed to stop reading before anything was revealed, but just incase you were wondering... Only 13 days 11 hours to go 😬 https://mixnmojo.com/countdown/

  7. True. I did like Al's comment about how nobody up there had had any formal training. A bit of inspiration.

  9. I really can't blame Roberta jumping in and talking about her game given the awkwardness of Frank not nominating an answerer. Somebody needed to jump in. And in her defence, her current project is remake of Colossal Cave -- the first ever adventure game, so it was directly related to Frank's question (even if she got a tiny bit sidetracked explaining that she was remaking it, which sounded a bit like an advert for a couple of seconds). Thankfully after that awkward opening it got great. Everyone loosened up. It became more of a roundtable and was really enjoyable! Frank did a great job! Re: "Adventure games are dead." I agree with Ben Croshaw that other games just stole all their mechanics and made them redundant. To most gamers an action game with adventure game mechanics is more fun than those mechanics by themselves. Ron: "Nothing is more boring than an adventure game trailer" 😅 So true Fun internet rabbit-hole fact: Roberta Williams is one of the women posing on the cover of "Softporn Adventure", the original game that Al Lowe remade into Leisure Suit Larry.
  10. Agreed: The Shivah, The Blackwell Series, Unavowed. All wonderful adventure games.
  11. As I say, this makes zero sense to me. Software has had copy protection ever since it could -- it's just been adapted to the modern age. Nothing new. Physical copies of modern games (which I love, too) have copy protection. I've heard complaints that Steam might suddenly disappear... for the last 20 years The requirement is connect to the internet is nothing -- It takes more effort to NOT be connected to the internet these days. Even with GOG you need to connect to the internet to download the game in the first place. The only potential downside with Steam is the lack of a second-hand games market -- which isn't helping software developers: Publishers want DRM. But then GOG doesn't have that, either. As I said: The convenience outweighs the cons for me. Arguments against DRM seem to be idealogical more than practical/logical... but vote with your wallet. Maybe I'm just being lazy, and there's definitely pressure on smaller companies to support GOG due to it.

  13. What if someone sailed with their pet chimp from the Eastern hemisphere?

  15. We know apes aren't included... but what about chimps? Are there actually any chimps in the Caribbean? And would you spot it if one appeared?
  16. This is a really interesting conversation. I can't help but feel that gaming culture is partially to blame for all of it. I love gaming, but I generally hate gamers. The whole industry has the whiff of toxicity (of course there are lovely exceptions to that sweeping statement, eg. Double Fine and many others, but they have to swim in the same shitty sea as G*merG^te). When I worked at Sony 20+ years ago, the whole company was 98% men... and even that gave the place a certain whiff. And I recognise that smell even decades later when I play certain games... a totally myopic view of the world that believes it's worldly and balanced. Anyway, this is all a very big subject! I've always assumed that people boycotted Steam because of DRM issues (which I can't fathom -- the convenience far outweigh the cons in my mind), but if people are doing it for ethical reasons, well that's something I can get behind. I didn't particularly like Gabe Newell's "everything goes on Steam" response to H*tred. Of course, banning the game gave it more notoriety... So on some level they can't win. But on another level, they should just make it clear where their boundaries are and stick to them.
  17. Ironically (given the other interesting discussion going on in this thread) Valve make a great device for this: The Steam Link. I used it with my computer upstairs and the lag was minimal, even in action games.
  18. It may be madness, but those are the rules: "counter per monkey head"... three-headed monkey = 3 monkeys. QED. I wholly disagree with this logic
  19. It was just continuing the joke of putting in silly reasons to buy the game: SOMI: "Relentless jabs, and cryptic in-jokes only smart people will understand." MI2: "Void where prohibited." Curse kind of dropped the ball by actually listing reasons a marketing department would like to see (although they did put silly screenshot captions like, "Learn a valuable trade in lighthouse and VCR repair"). I would expect they didn't want to put people off who hadn't played the other games, and so tried to remove any reference to them (eg, "NEW" jokes, "NEW" puns, etc.)

  21. OBJECTION! Half the monkeys I know wear cute little blue hats.
