see, Qui-gon couldve kill maul. He had the oppertunity when he fell, but he didnt take it. If he didnt die Anaken might of not been able to be a Jedi, therefore, giving Ben less of a chance on Dooku, and Anaken wouldnt be able to bring balence to the force if he went to the good side. You just gotta think about those things.

lets look at the track record:

Qui-gon: fought Darth Maul - lost.

Obi-wan: fought Darth Maul - won

Fought Darth Tyranus - lost

Anakin Skywalker - i'll assume he won

Darth Vader - retired

Quigon has lost all his matches, Obi-wan has won 2 - against all powerful sith lords, lost 1 and we'll call the EpIV fight a draw.

From previous form it would seem Obi-wan has the edge

anakin is suppose to be the most powerful jedi ever... but obi-wan beats anakin in ep III... so does that mean obi-wan is the most powerful? no, because it doesn't work that way.

why does obi-wan beat anakin then? well i think the reason is because anakin has just turned to the darkside... he is fuelled by hate and is quite simply out of control. obi-wan however is very good at controlling his emotions... after qui-gon died you could see obi-wan was very angry... but he could control the anger and turn it into determination to defeat maul.

who would win if qui-gon fought obi-wan?

well it depends... why are they fighting? what emotions are involved?

duels aren't decided on lightsaber skill alone... but if they were i would say obi-wan, he has a fast and aggressive style as apposed to qui-gon who had an slow but elegant style. it would be similar to lukes duel with vader in ROTJ, the sheer ferocity of luke's attacks were too much for vader.

I know where you're coming from, but i'm just going on what i've seen (or are about to see). I don't really know that much about the prequel novels so I can't comment on what goes on outside the films.

No matter about the debate, Obi-wan is still a bad-ass!

Qui-Gon was holding back the obvious temptation to the Dark Side of the force. If Qui-Gon showed a little more anger and fierceness, I bet he would have splitted Maul's hilt in half first at the very least and probably kill him off. But since this didn't happen to obvious thematical noting George wanted in his big movie (Episode 1 is 1/6 of the SW "movie").

Obi-Wan was fast and furious after Maul stabbed Qui-Gon, no pun on the movie I hadn't seen intended. Maul tricked Obi-Wan, who was temporarily blinded by anger, into having his back face the shaft so Maul can use the force to push him into it. If he hadn't been a show-off in the first place, and had not forgotten about pushing Qui-Gon's saber into the shaft too, the two Jedi would have died.

In Episode 4, the way Vader and Obi-Wan "Old Ben" Kenobi fought had been much slower than even Qui-Gon's style of swordsmanship. Just look at him! He's obviously been out of practice for quite a while. I believe while Lucas was making Episode 1, he said along the lines of, "I was looking for a type of swordfighting that was reminicant of what we've seen in the movies, but a more energized version of it. Because we've never actually seen real Jedi at work, we've seen old men and a crippled half-droid half-man and a young boy that learned from these people..."

If you put Qui-Gon and an aged Obi-Wan in a battle, simply by how they had fought before, then I'm forced to take an unpopular opinion by saying hands down, Qui-Gon would win. This would especially be true if he didn't hold back, and I know Qui-Gon could never bear to kill any of his apprentices.

It's not as simple as you like for it to be. I told you: Darth Maul was being a show-off. If he was serious about his duties as a Sith Lord he would have killed Obi-Wan too. He didn't. He forgot about Qui-Gon's lightsaber. Qui-Gon was holding back on his emotions. Obi-Wan didn't, that's what nearly got him killed.

i think he means that he was 1 of 2 jedi to survive the purge so he must have skills, such as kicking ani's ass and collecting himself and using wit to kill maul. he was just outmatched w/dooku cus dooku used a saber style that the jedi had not seen or used for hundreds of years.
