Actually, the more I look at it, the more I see that they have optimized those things that your eyes are naturally drawn to - look at the G-Man, for instance. His face and eyes look good, but the rest is Q3 quality. Same with most of the things - the physics at play are fascinating, and much of what you see looks great, but it appears to be an overall effect, where Doom III is about a total quality.

Mind you - I think that the HL2 choices are very smart, as they will likely allow better performance.

Pfft... Farcry already did all that. Hehe.

:D Imagine if Halo came out on PC last year without having been out on XBox for 2 years. Still a good game, but it would have been outdone and past-due. HL2 might end up in that bin ... hope not, though ... I hope there is sufficient physics and gaming innovation to make it worthwhile.

Those videos are just rererereleases, can't Valve come up with anything? ^_^
You mean something like a game?!?

Exactly. Either that or something else besides rereleased videos. If they'd release more about their game, I just might be more interested in it.

I'm very interested in HL2, but I can't help but be cynical when all they have to do is re-release a high-res version of something they released >10 months ago and the entire gaming media gets a massive hard-on (apologies for the vernacular)!!! I had to hit *four* sites before one said that it was *not* new (I knew that, but wanted to see).

Deus Ex: IW, did those shadows look realistic? NO! They were terrible....

What in the hell are you talking about?!!?!

DX 2's shadows are one of the best in-game shadows i've ever seen! Maybe you just have your shadow detail at low.

Oh yah, Doom 3 is realy realistic  the lighting is over done

I assume you've only seen the screenshots, not the E3 movie? When the shadows are in constant movement, it looks beautiful. As well, moving shadows look way more realistic than silly static lightmaps. For a comparison: The lighting in HL2 has the same amount of flexibility as the lighting in JA.

Say what you will about Doom 3's storyline or gameplay (not that any of us can truly judge that yet), its engine wipes the floor of the competition. It really does look stunning - Half Life 2's main gimmick is its physics, but in terms of advanced graphics, it hasn't got much to offer.

Doom 3's engine, regardless of the game itself, is going to rock. It's about time we had a decent engine to license a load of games on. The Quake 3 engine just doesn't cut the mustard any more - well, it hasn't for years to be honest.

Roll on Doom 3!

Well stated.

The proof isn't just in the first games, but in the licensed games that follow.

We have seen that both the Q3 and UT engines work very well for loads of applications, each having strengths and weaknesses - and obviously the UT engine extending better into newer technology in the form of the 'Unreal Warfare' engine.

We will have to wait a while to see where the next generation of games will land.

Anyone read the article about the new Unreal engine? It's awesome.

Yeah it's nice to see Epic following id Software in moving further towards CGI technology. :)
