Some guy has claimed he found Azaria Chamberlian the night she was taken by a dingo. Now there's all these rumours going around about what actually happened. Did he accidentally shoot her? Did he really shoot the dingo? Did he really find her? Was there anyone else involved? What did he do with the body?

This story is 24years old and it's still enthralling, one of Australia's biggest ever mysteries.

Anyways, are these new alligations getting much publicity overseas?

OK, basically 24years ago a baby was supposedly taken by a dingo at Ayres Rock (Ularu) in centeral Australia. Anyways, the body was never found, although her lil jumpsuit was found and it was established that the clothing had been cut by a pair of scissors or something similar.

Anyways there was a trial/inquest into the death of the baby and the mother, Lindsy Chamberlian was charged with Azaria's (the baby) death, but was freed a few years later.

So anyways, over the weekend some nutcase claims he knows what happened to Azaria. He was hunting in the national park the night Azaria was taken trying to get a rabbit for his dog who was camping with him (even though it's illegal to have a dog and firearm in a national park and killing an Australian animal in a national park is illegal) and he shot what he thought was a rabbit, but it ended up being a dingo with a baby in its mouth.

This story will explain it better...

Shooter tells of killed dingo holding body

AZARIA Chamberlain was killed by a dingo and her body hidden by men camping rough near Ayers Rock, one of the group has sensationally claimed.

An elderly Melbourne man says he shot the dingo that killed Azaria and then retrieved her body from its jaws.

Frank Cole also believes Azaria's body may have been buried in a Melbourne back yard by one of his mates.

Mr Cole, 78, told the Sunday Herald Sun he had lived with the secret of what happened to the 9 1/2-week-old girl for almost 25 years.

The ailing Pascoe Vale pensioner, who is the last of the camping party at the rock (now Uluru), said he wanted to unburden himself before it is too late.

"Over the past 25 years I've had nightmares and many sleepless nights over the whole affair," Mr Cole said.

"But I may not have long left and if anything happened to me nobody would know the truth."

Mr Cole said he had fled the Northern Territory after the discovery, fearing he might face jail for using a firearm in a national park.

His shock claims could solve one of Australia's the most famous mysteries.

Details of his claims were passed to police yesterday.

The Sunday Herald Sun has investigated and verified many details of his story.

Mr Cole also claimed he had informed Azaria's mother - now Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton after remarrying - and producers of an $8 million telemovie about the saga.

He said he had been asked not to go public until after the film was completed.

Azaria disappeared from Uluru campsite on August 17, 1980, with Mrs Chamberlain crying out that she had been taken by a dingo.

But the toddler's body was never discovered and, after two inquests and a trial, her mother was jailed in 1982 for murder, only to be freed in 1986.

It was while camping rough with three mates near Uluru, on an errand to find food for their dog, that Mr Cole said he had received the shock of his life.

Thinking he had spotted a rabbit in the bush - it was on nightfall - he had shot at it, only to discover on closer inspection it was a male dingo.

"As I approached it, I saw that it had a baby in its mouth," Mr Cole said.

He said he had picked up the baby and driven back to his mates.

"We were shocked. We realised what had happened and we were in tears," he said.

"The baby had four puncture holes in its head and one of its ears was missing.

"Otherwise, it didn't seem to have been harmed, but it had obviously been dead some time."

Mr Cole said that fearing they might face serious consequences for having discharged a gun and having a dog in a national park - and with one of them having served time in prison - the panic-stricken men had decided not to tell the police straight away.

Instead, they had planned that Mr Cole would flee back to Melbourne with one mate and the gun, and the other two would later tell police they had hit the dingo on the road and discovered the baby.

"All these things happened on the spur of the moment," Mr Cole said.

"The last time I saw her she was wrapped in a towel and then in a tartan blanket and put in a Duffel bag.

"We left on the understanding that the other blokes would go to the authorities and report finding the dingo and the baby, but they never did what they promised."

Mr Cole said that as the publicity surrounding the disappearance had become overwhelming he had questioned one of the other two about what happened with the baby.

"He told me he would tell me later, but he died of a heart attack and I never found out," Mr Cole said.

"I have always suspected he brought the baby back to Melbourne and buried it somewhere - maybe in the yard of the house where he lived at the time."

The other two members in the party had also since died, he said, leaving him alone with their secret.

Why's everyone so hard on the dingos? They're just trying to make a living.

People don't see it that way :( It's like "oh the dingo killed someone blah blah blah blah do something" so people rush off and kill it, when people forget that we kill too, but aren't put down or anything for what we do. We have no reason to kill other humans, we don't eat humans to survive, but dingos can and do.

Up until a few years ago most people just saw them like a pet dog, which was a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiig mistake, they might look like dogs, but they're wild, it's not like you can go and play fetch with a wild dingo.

I love them anyway, think they're an amazing animal.

It's people like you that don't once wonder where that 24 year old expression came from.

I hate that dingo quote anyway... it's so insensitive and not even funny. It's about as funny as saying that all Australians ride around in kangaroo pouches and we all live in tin sheds in the middle of the outback.

i like kylie minogue :) except she's really short. she's like, 5' 1".

and isn't canberra the capital of australia? the porn capital of australia literally is the capital of australia...just goes to show you how crazy everyone is over there...except natty.

oh yeah, that reminds me. a few days ago, i was watching the game show network, and "who wants to be a millionaire" was on, so i just watched it. they get to this one question, and it was "what is the capital of australia?", and the choices were:

a)canberra

b)perth

c)sydney

d)melbourne

and i thought "oh, that's easy. it's sydney." and then i thought, "oh, wait. no. it's melbourne. or is it sydney? no, it's canberra. but i think it's sydney. no, actually it's canberra."

so confusing. wasn't sydney the capital at one point? and then it just changed one day. and isn't there at least one person here that leaves in each of those cities? i think carl lives in perth, mek lives in canberra, natty lives in melbourne...i think someone lives in sydney. not sure. either way...sorry, i got a bit off-topic there.

From memory (and my Australian history is a tad rusty at the moment :p) When Australia was first discovered it was Sydney that was discovered and so of course became the capital of Australia. Then when other *colonies* were setup, Melbourne wanted to be the capital of Australia. After lots of arguing, it was decided Canberra would be the capital of Australia as it's between both Melbourne and Sydney (which I still think it's closer to Sydney... 3hours drive from Sydney, but 8hours from Melbourne)

Sydney's often referred to as the accidental city, as it wasn't meant to become a capital city because it's so hilly and everything, and really isn't the most ideal location for housing and stuff. Still it's Australia's biggest capital city (4million approx, Melbourne's 3million approx) and has some of the most amazing views for any capital city. Melbourne and Sydney have this whole love/hate relationship. Melbourne is the home of AFL, Sydney is the home of rugby. The gay community argue over who has the better gay nightlife, Melbourne claim to have the better cafe lifestyle. As it is, Melbourne is more laid back than Sydney and we're more easy going. Not that Sydney isn't, Melbourne's just more casual about their approach to things. I think sometimes Sydney people tend to be perfectionists.

Anyway, I'm the same height as Kylie. I remember her first concert here in Melbourne for the Fever Tour in 2002, I met up with a couple of people I knew off a Kylie forum. Anyways I met up with this guy Leo and because I couldn't find him I'd called him on his mobile phone. So when we met up and realized who each other was, he takes one look at me squeals (he's like the campest, gayest guy I know I love him to pieces, but his apartment is pink, has feather boas everywhere and mirrorballs all over the place for example) "OMG! you're soooooo short you're Kylie height! that's so cute! You're so short!" and then gave me this big cuddle. Was so cute of him though. He gave me a card for my birthday and called me the ultimate glitter princess (I have this obsession with glitter and sparkly stuff)

Wow, I hardly know that much about my own town, let alone most of england. I can talk for the country on anything to do with Elizabeth I, but for the life of me, I don't know the significance of half the statues and museums in my town, or even where Northampton came from (i.e, when it was settleed and established, anything special happen here apart from Princess Di being buried here, and so on)
