Tyrion
You see, for a long while I've been using the mp3 format for my files. But recently it's come upon me that it's really getting outdated- the format iself, and the fact it's patented to hell. Seriously, I try to get conversion/encoding programs but they all end up requiring money, bar a few(EAC, Quintessential Player.) Hell, when my friend gave me a few WMA music file I had to go through hoops just to convert the damn thing for free(ended up converting wma to wav to mp3, which results in no ID Tags...) Now, let's say I do change to another file format- which one? I'm thinking Ogg Vorbis, as supposedly it's better than an mp3 in every way. But then there's also WMA too(can't do Wav or a Lossless format, cause I simply won't have enough space to do so.) Anybody have suggestions? jon_hill987
I use the LAME encoder, it is mp3 with varible bitrate. I don't think it sorts out your problem though...

MTV2
you should convert to AAC, keeps great quality, smaller and easy, but not alot of mp3 players support it. just get iTunes and options and tell it to convert all to aac(i think thats all you do)
ZBomber
I just use WMA because I'm too lazy to convert/I don't notice a difference in quality.
TiE23
Windows Media Player 10 with WMA isn't that bad, and a couple of MP3 players play them. TiE
Tyrion
Meh, for the moment I'm actually going to stick to mp3. I'm already using the Lame Encoder on High Quality Variable Bitrate using EAC(also using the Ubercopyplusv3.2...), and I really can't notice a freakin' difference between it and whatever else( Ogg, FLAC, WMA..) Thanks for your help, and I'm hitting myself for wasting three perfectly good hours of my life.
El Sitherino
WMA is crap. It meshes pitches. If you insist on not using Mp3. Use OGG, FLAC, or AC3. If you stick with Mp3 use the LAME encoder.

Believe me, I've made sure my Mp3's are in the highest quality possible. It's just that the fact it's patented is causing some problems for me(certain programs can't encode into mp3, for instance.) Astrotoy7
some pplz are into OGG in a big way, some are using mp4 too, though I dont know much about that meself I have no qualms with the mp3 format. Unless you have an awesome sound system, if you encode at high settings, you can get away without too much degradation of the awesome fidelity of your current Linkin Park CD mtfbwya

BCanr2d2
MP4 encoder here, love it a lot compared to MP3. To me, which is what finding the right music format is about, it sounds a lot better, a lot more detail.
ZBomber
Isn't mp4 video files? I coulda sworn it was, because I think I have one. EDIT - Nevermind, that's mp2...

toms
Well, i just spent a week converting a few hundred albums to mp3... so it had better be around a while longer!!! OGG and FLAC are better formats, but the lack of support means you can't play them on much. So unless you know for sure you are gonna have compatible stuff it isn't worth it IMHO. WMA and AAC and whatever sony's system are called all give good compression... but are all proprietory and DRM infested that is too annoying for me. MP3 seems to be the only option until some thing better comes around, or disk sizes increase until we can encode in much better bitrates. MP3 pro works on all mp3 players, but adds in extra trebble info on MP3 pro compatible players. Still not sure its worth it though. dbPowerAmp with one of the LAME -alt presets (standard or extreme) is the best compromise for now, imho. ------------- Out of interest, how is everyone who has paid 99c a track (about the same as a CD) for low-ish quality encodings going to feel in a year or two when they have to pay again to download higher quality ones? Especially as those who just bought the CD can just re-encode in a higher quality.
