ET Warrior
I find it interesting they call it a study of long-term effects of gaming..but the study itself only ranged over a single month. They also seemed to make no disticntion between people who had played video games before this study and those who had not. I mean, if video games did increase your tendency for aggression, then I think somebody whose been playing them for several years won't exhibit much of a change over the course of a single month. Don't get me wrong, I tire of hearing about how video games make us killers, but this study was poorly done, and I imagine the findings won't find a lot of support. TiE23
Sooo, someone should find a group of 200 people, ranging from teens to old adults who have never played video games before (games like Pac Man and tetris dont count) and have them play Half Life 2 for 1 year? So they can prove that people who play games don't go out and kill dozens of people or bomb places? People don't get the 'idea' of killing people with guns just from video games, its commonly known fact since the 1800s. / Just because someone knows how to shoot a gun doesn't mean he is inevitably going to kill someone with a gun. Thats why you dont see ninja fans killing their worst enenmies with surikens and kantanas.
ET Warrior
I'm not saying that video games cause violence, I'm saying it was a crappy case-study that proves nothing.
TK-8252
Oh well, it's better done than the "studies" that claim games are evil...
access_flux
finally a study that i can agree with. forgive me for saying so but it annoys the crap out of me when someone who has no clue about something critisizes it. i mean, if your relieving stress by killing things in virtual reality, then you must be less inclined to kill seomthing in real life? i guess that could be slightly flawed. toms
I'm sure i remember reading about this somewhere else and there they said thzat they did make a distinction between gamers and newbies... and neither group showed any change in agression. One month is hardly "long term", but its better than many studies where they basically test increases in adrenaline immediately after playing the game, not increases in violence. Maybe i should apply for a grant to do a proper study, it can't be that hard to design a decent testing procedure.
Alegis
Is this anything new? We all know it. Seems most gamers are -40 and the majority of "the opposing team" +40 years. Quoting 'The Economist', same thing happened with Rock n Roll 50 years ago. Bad influence for the children, violence... Even though you control a character in games difference with television is zero to none.

El Sitherino
Yeah, this study is about as credible as me wiping my ass with paper and saying it's the cure for cancer.
TiE23
Yeah, this study is about as credible as me wiping my ass with paper and saying it's the cure for cancer. Well, you have to admit, its better than hearing a bunch of studies that are also uncredible that say video games are evil.
El Sitherino
Well, you have to admit, its better than hearing a bunch of studies that are also uncredible that say video games are evil. That it is. Other studies that supposedly "prove" video games make people violent only measure for increase in adrenaline and levels of aggression. I'm sure if they did a similiar reading for when you take an ordinary drive or go shopping they'd find the same levels. And then we'd find out driving and grocery shopping makes you kill people and do bad things.
TiE23
Oh, video games make you excited? Is that it? Yah, they are wrong IS.
lukeskywalker1
When you are in an intense situation your level of excitment and adrenaline levels will raise. Duh, its common sense. The only thing that video games do is desensitize people... thats all. Which, I sorta think isn't a really bad thing, its not a good thing, but not really bad. TV does the same thing. Mike Windu
IMO: If I shoot 300 people in GTA, but see 1 person get shot, I think I really would care for the wellbeing of said person. >_>

El Sitherino
I can speak first hand that no game will ever prepare you for having a real gun stuck in your face. All this BS about desensitization is just that, BS. Only thing that desensitizes you is witnessing **** in real life.

I argued the same thing with a few of my friends at school who were talking about action movies and video games. Talking about how Rambo they could be. I told them they would piss their pants and break down crying (most likely) if some pshyco stuck a gun in their face. They all agreed with me regretably. >_>
ChAiNz.2da
Perhaps they should do a study of proper Role Models for 'kid's TV programming' Might as well go ahead & check Power Rangers off that list check this out: http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/08/16/yacht.murders.reut/index.html creepy.....
