CD-RW/DVD or DVD+RW?

So, I'm looking to buy a dvd type drive. I have a CD drive but I need a burner, too. So, I was just going to buy CD-RW/DVD drive. But, I came across a few good deals on DVD burners as well. So, I really am not sure on what to get. What I really need to know is if DVD burners can also burn regular CDs, which intuition is telling me no. If anyone can give me opions on this it would be awesome of you.

Most commercial DVD burners nowadays will be able to burn both DVD and CD's :)

Just make sure they do on the box before you fork over the cash ;)

You might want to look for a NEC, Pioneer or Lite-on drive. IMH that's pretty much the best ones out there. You might also want to consider Plextor and LG drives.

Plextor is like the best when it comes to optical drives. NEC suckx, pioneer is up there and so is LG dunno about lite-on.

Funny, considering they and Lite-on seem to be the highest rated dvd-burners.

no. it will get an 8/10, may be cheap, but one of there drives wouldnt work after 5 burns and it has bad software... but plextor and pioneer are better...

Well, I ended up getting an LG 16x Super Multi DVD/CD Rewriter. It can burn all 3 types of DVDs, compatible with all types of DVDs, supports the double layer stuff, and has the Lightscribe thing. Came with Nero, Power Producer Gold and Power DVD, which most of everyone else had. Paid about $100 for it.

Does anybody have a prefence for DVD playing software? I have Power DVD on my lappy, but I'm not sure if I like it. Everything else seems to have choppy playback.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just a quick, probably stupid question. Just humor me.

My first cd drive is a DVD rom. The second drive says DVD+Rewritable. I'm just confirming that means I can burn stuff to DVD, right?

Secondly, if I were to take a video file from my harddrive and burn it onto there as a video option through Nero or something, that would play on my DVD player as long as it's the right disc?

That is what it should mean. Only cheaper drives found in laptops generally have CD burning support, but can read DVDs.

In Nero, you should chose to burn a DVD-Video disc, and that will play like any normal DVD. (If it's small enough, burn plenty of episodes onto the same disc) - they will just be seperate chapters

Can I write over the discs is what I also meant to ask. It'd be a waste if I just could do it once and then have to use a new disc each time. I mean I buy the boxsets when they come out so it'd be redundant and expensive if I couldn't reuse one disc each week. The whole 'rewritable' thing is what's throwing me off. EDIT - I know what it means now and know I can do just that. Thanks for your help there.

And yes, my DVD player supports DVD-RW/R (but not anything with a + or something *shrug*). Not that I have a say in the matter, but is there a difference in quality when it comes to the + or -?

If you want to burn video files and have them watchable on a DVD player, assuming your DVD player can read burned media, you'll have to make sure your files are in .mpeg format. MOST DVD players won't be able to read other types of files.

So how do I get the mpegs onto the disc? Nero can't do that. It can do it to CDs (which don't play in my XBOX or DVD player). I also tried copying the file to the disc, but it wouldn't go through.

Any more software I need to do this or what?

If you use Smart Start, assuming you have Nero 7. Then just make sure you are creating a DVD-Video session. It will then try to convert your video to DVD compatible MPEG2.

If not, you may need another program, like WinAVI video converter to change it to one that Nero can convert to MPEG2

Where is that Smart Start thing? It's not the easiest combo of words to google and get what you're looking for. Is it freeware or what?

No, Smart Start is part of Nero's cd/dvd software suite....

http://www.nero.com/

Far from freeware, but it's one of the best darned burning apps out there.. I use it with conviction :D They do offer a trial version to see if it meets your needs.. but it's well worth the money IMO..

The one advantage you get with Nero (among the many) is that most online tutorials, examples, tips etc tend to use Nero as their "base" program.. many of which includes "how to" pics and guides. If you have Nero, then the guides are that much more easier to follow...

I see. I don't have that version of Nero. It came bundled on this PC which is creeping up on two years old now. Not worth it for me. I'd hardly use it beyond what I use Nero for now and then the added bonus of burning video files onto DVD.

Thanks for your help anyways ;)
