shaded6
what are your thoughts on holographic technology and the influence of light being controlled at different sizes and limits? NOT star wars related, in all, but on the subject because i came up with an excollent idea on how to make something so real and so freakin awesome! i'm sure my thoughts were already considered, if not, already created, but, what are your thoughts on holographs and their REALITY? seth
REDJOHNNYMIKE
I used to be real into that stuff, but I don't remember too much (shakes fist at unusually hot summer:xp: ) There are different ways of achieving what's generally known as a "hologram", so what's yours? (where you got the inspiration would be interesting as well)
Hallucination
What RJM said. P.S. You seem to have tonnes of odd questions, shade.
REDJOHNNYMIKE
new guys are always like that J/K [ot]Wether or not I agree with him, he does bring up interesting points, and I hope he isn't one of those one-post-wonders;)[/ot] @S6, It would help to know what basic "type" of effect you're thinking of, do you mean reflecting light into a "shifted" image (the saucer toys) or light projected on some sort of solid forcefield (star trek, how else do you think they sit on holographic chairs:xp: )
RedHawke
Personally, I like the Goa' Uld "Tele-Balls" in Stargate SG-1!

shaded6
alright, yeah, i can get into everything all at once, for days on end. but here is a theory and i think an actuality: if you reflect light, it expands until it hits a physical compund, right? like pointing a flashlight to the sky, at night, or pointing at the wall. when you point it to the sky it continues to expand because it has no limits, but when you point it at the wall it stops because it hits that physical compound. but is there a way to control and shape the light to be condensed into a particular form, and hold that form until you turn it off? and even if it werent light, whatever a holograph is made out of, could you control the figure by programing it? my excollent idea: holographic lightsabers, identical to the ones portrayed on screen, in so much detail and control, exact replica of the lightsaber artist, but less deadly, but perfect in detail. yeah i know, may sound cheesy, but when you think about it, its better then having to buy a plastic one. which, i WONT do, that or glass. seth
REDJOHNNYMIKE
If you could get that to work it would pretty much be a real lightsaber, if you could keep that light energy focused you would probably have something similar, it would require more power for true lightsaber abilities though. Sabretooth
I had read about it in some Popular Science issue, where a bunch of scientists at a lab had managed to create a holographic image some object. It lasted for a few seconds, or something... But I believe it can be done, yes.
Bastila
I can't wait to get holographic technology , but i'll bet i'll be dead when they do lol.

shaded6
you cant use actual lightsaber technology though, because all the components dont exist, but this doesnt mean you cant have the same feel and control over how it is like an actual lightsaber. if actual lightsabers did exist, i would have had one by now and started using it: eh, whether for the good or the evil, lol, i dont know yet...... hey, i got an idea, if we come across one, lets go kill some sand people....4wheelin some banthas through Mos Eisley, drinking beer.....actually, jim bean black and pepsi, sounds so much better. "I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead. Every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women, and the children, too! They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals! I hate them! " —Anakin Skywalker and now that i think about it, it is totally evil. not enough sand people in the world to begin with. leave it to anakin to take away intrest in doing, something..... i have to put this here: "Slimy? Mudhole? My home this is!" —Yoda to Luke lmao. i can see yoda saying this and it cracks me up.... seth
REDJOHNNYMIKE
A dumb thought just popped into my head... If you used several small lasers and a lens that focused them into a single point several feet from the lens, you might be able to make a sort of floating lightsaber fragment, and depending on the power you can pack into it (old school belt mounted saber packs;)) you just might be able to get it hot enough to burn something... or at least have a $50,000 sparkler for the 4th of July:D
shaded6
but light expands, and lasers are just another form of light. ever heard of the literal Star Wars Program, with NASA or some other space orginization? they have this laser beam sort of thing they use, or are going to use, to destroy missiles. i wish we had all the components to make an actual lightsaber, first thing i would do is buy a permit, just so its legal, and then have a lighter attitude towards life knowing if anyone wanted to seriously mess with me, they would know they are in jepardy of losing a limb. i know that sounds evil, but that taught plenty of people a valuable lesson: dont mess with someone who is trained to use a lightsaber, especially if they are a Jedi or a Sith. REDJOHNNYMIKE
That's why I suggested using lenses to focus the light, lightsabers have focusing lenses;)
shaded6
really? i guess i need to get more into that. but how do they have lenses when the material that makes up a lightsaber can cut through anything? seth
REDJOHNNYMIKE
I haven't read a SW encyclopedia since I was knee high to a grasshopper, but wether it's light energy, or some similar form, it needs to be focused/contained otherwise you'd have a really nice flashlight. If you haven't tried this yet do so soon.... Find an area that is safe to light a fire, make sure it's a sunny day, get a magnifying glass and some sort of paper or dry wood or some other flamable substance. Put the fuel materials on the ground and hold the glass over them so that the sun shines through it and onto the fuel, lift the glass up and down until you find the point where the light is completely focused into a single point, hold it there for a while and the concentrated light will burn the material and start a fire. You just mad a redneck lightsaber When I was a kid I used to do that all the time in the woods... <_< >_> *runs away*
shaded6
redneck lightsaber LMFAO!!! yeah me and my brothers started this huge bonfire the last time we partied; had a bottle of 151 proof rum, cruzan, some coke, and a little electrical flying saucer that hovered above the ground. since then, i have stopped drinking.......lol seth
Astrotoy7
going back to holograms. One *realistic* idea I like are the 2d/3d holgraphic projections, sorta like the ones you see in Minority Report. Darth InSidious
I'm gonna nitpick here: Light doesn't expand. It's a wave/ray/particle, not a gas or liquid. Rays simply go. You cannot compress a microwave (aside from with a compactor, but that's ju-- wait, wrong type of microwave). There. deathdisco
Um.. since there is no such thing as the Force (the main reason a Jedi/Sith can handle a lightsaber), real lightsabers would be a BAD idea. You would maim/kill yourself, a friend/family member, house pet, take out walls in your house/apartment. How many times do you think a sword master/martial artist nicks themselves before becoming proficiant? Swords are more forgiving than lightsabers. Now if they were, lets say taser strength that could be fun

If you shine a flashlight into the sky, the light eventually scatters until it's no longer visible. Try shining a flashlight powered by two 'D'-cell batteries onto the bottom of an airplane flying at 30,000 feet
The Doctor
When I think of holographic technology, I think of Star Trek holodecks. That kind of holographic technology on that kind of scale is well beyond our level of technology now, but in a few decades..... who knows?
shaded6
when i say expand, i mean, continues without a limit. and if you turn on a light during the day, it expands with the rest of the light in the room; especially a flashlight. seth
Det. Bart Lasiter
It does have a limit though, when the light dissipates and is no longer visible.
