Mike Windu
Its bull**** that anyone has to pass driver's ed to gradauate high school. More than likely would make better drivers in the future. Plus, money off on your insurance. Worth it to take it, in my opinion. Even though I haven't. I would have taken it if the opportunity arose in high school. MrWally
Wow, I was driving over to Rox's house earlier today and I heard a interview on the news about this very thing (not the blind people, but the requirment to graduate) and the people were overjoyed because it would "solve all our problems on the road." Luckily I had the fortune of reading this thread just minutes earlier. It made me mad. Very mad.
narfblat
You mean like a lot of the useless classes you have to do in high school? Those are useless because you choose a different career path. Driver's Ed classes are useless to blind because they have no ability to drive. And sometimes things that appear useless have some use later in life. You never know what will happen in the next 30 years(except grey hair, and possibly baldness).
ET Warrior
Why is it any different though? They'll never use their knowledge of driving, and I will never use my knowledge of metamorphic rocks. And I spent a LOT more of my life learning about geology than they will spend on drivers ed, so I think I got shafted mroe than them.
Det. Bart Lasiter
Just so the rest of you know, even if someone is legally blind, it doesn't mean they're totally blind, and with corrective lenses they can get their drivers license (it's restricted, but they can still drive a car). So them taking the test isn't totally useless, unlike say, ET's geology class

El Sitherino
Who said it did? Basically the point is you always have classes that serve absolutely no purpose in your future, be it simply because career choice, or just because the class has absolutely no life value. We all had to do that. Just because someone is disabled we shouldn't let them skimp through life. They want equality, that means the moronic with the good. Tyrion
So pretty much you want the blind to take a drivers education because you had to take pointless classes? What altruism.

TiE23
Well, I just think that the blind kid should be excused from taking the test and just get listed as "Pass." Not because it's a waste time, it's just that the kid doesn't need to take Driver's ED.

Not because it's a waste time, it's just that the kid doesn't need to take Driver's ED. Nor do I need to take oceanography and nor does ET need to take geology. So should we just get listed as "Pass" too? :/
TiE23
Nor do I need to take oceanography and nor does ET need to take geology. So should we just get listed as "Pass" too? :/ Fine, make the blind kid take it, have the mom read her the rules a couple of times and have the teacher ask her the questions. It's not that hard but it's the idea that it is bad. And it's different from you taking your oceanography class.
TK-8252
And it's different from you taking your oceanography class. Not really. I'm sure as hell never going to use the knowledge of ocean sediments in my life.
TiE23
Not really. I'm sure as hell never going to use the knowledge of ocean sediments in my life. And I'm sure as hell never going to use the standard quadratic formula y=ax^2+bx+c in my life. But they still say algebra is important to you. :\ Well anyway, you're just agreeing that this isn't needed. The rules will probably change soon to allow them to graduate without driver's ed. Tyrion
No, because it's part of life. Just because it's a part of life does not mean you can't minimize it. If you're trying to say that the blind need to learn how to deal with needless trivialities like driving, do I have to remind you that they're blind? MrWally
Haha, correction, I was being driven** Not really. I'm sure as hell never going to use the knowledge of ocean sediments in my life. But the point Tie is trying to make is that you COULD use the knowledge of ocean sediments (although you most likely won't). However, theres is a slim to none chance that a blind person will ever never need to know the laws of the road (the slim chance being that they are simply legally blind and get correctional lenses, or that they undergo sugery on their eye to gain sight [which is possible]) seeing that they are unable to drive. ET Warrior
Actually, I read a news article a few months back that discussed a company that was working on developing technology that DID allow blind people to see. It was the equivalent of tiny cameras implanted in their eyes and the rest I have no idea how they accomplished it. So the possibility of curing blindness isn't unlikely, because they'd already met with limited success. If you're trying to say that the blind need to learn how to deal with needless trivialities like driving, do I have to remind you that they're blind?Do I need to remind you that I'm not a geologist, statistician, philosopher, geologer, jazz historian, chemist, physicist, or psychologist? Tyrion
Do I need to remind you that I'm not a geologist, statistician, philosopher, geologer, jazz historian, chemist, physicist, or psychologist? I meant that being blind was already enough of a "pointless triviality." You want them to take this driving class like as if they don't know enough of life's problems, when they're blind and have been facing more boredom and hardships then your six periods of classes. Kjølen
Now now, let's not say anything we may regret. What if someone who was blind were to come onto Lucasforums and read this topic? We don't want to offend them.

However, theres is a slim to none chance that a blind person will ever never need to know the laws of the road... Yes, I'm not going to become a rocket scientist because I take Trig. Do I need to remind you that I'm not a geologist, statistician, philosopher, geologer, jazz historian, chemist, physicist, or psychologist? That's one of the many reasons why we don't have something like a caste system. And it also shows you how lucky we are that we can actually waste time in school doing something completely different.
