Arreat
http://break.com/index/meteor_hits_earth.html That is soo freaky, yet awesome at the same time. Can you imagine seeing that thing in the skies? Not too mention seeing the huge ass fire tidal wave it'll cause? :shivers:
Curt-Man
I wish I knew what they were saying...but yeah thats kinda cool.
Darth Andrew
Though I have no clue as to what they were saying, I liked the hopeful message at the end.
TiE23
Break has been adding that ad to the end of all their videos for some dumb reason. Other than that it was a good video, I watched it yesterday and I was quite enthralled. But you need to realize... that was one big motherf**king meteorite. (not an asteroid when it hits *gets shot for smart ass'ed-ness*) That thing was the size of Texas only rounder. One the size of Rhode Island (like 20+ miles in diameter) would be enough to screw everyone big time. I used to have this chart thingie that compared the destruction of different sized meteorites. Anything over 3 miles would be really really really bad (end of modern civilization bad), 1-2 miles would be "we're f**ked" bad.
Tyrion
Yeah, well, that's what we invented nukes for. ^_^

Kain
A: An asteroid of that size would create shockwaves that wouldn't leave a damn thing standing. B. That video was way too drawn out. Would an asteroid that size strike the earth, the resulting destruction would take a few seconds at best. C. That thing was less the size of Texas and more the size of the Moon. coupes.
I saw this on Discovery HD the other day, it was pretty impressive.
TiE23
B. That video was way too drawn out. Would an asteroid that size strike the earth, the resulting destruction would take a few seconds at best. Those shock waves were moving at tens of thousands of miles per hour. The earth is big and that looked rather accurate.
MrWally
Man that is scary... it blows my mind just thinking about it...
BongoBob
So in basic terms, minus all the CG and japanese talking, we'd be f***ed.

Datheus
That seemed like an incredibly large asteroid. I wonder how scentifically accurate that is. And can you imagine standing at ground zero as that thing came thundering in?
Kain
Those shock waves were moving at tens of thousands of miles per hour. The earth is big and that looked rather accurate. Perhaps, but as I said, that asteroid was like the size of the moon. Having said that, the shockwaves would be much more powerful and much faster. Not only would it be that much more destructive, the sheer force that the asteroid would hit with would knock the planet clean out of orbit. MrWally
Yeah, well, that's what we invented nukes for. ^_^ Actually, Nuking an asteroid would be one of the worst possible things to do, because it would result in thousands of small meteors hitting the earth which could do just as much Damage. At least that's what they were saying on the news yesterday

MrWally
I think you mean "<"? Yeah, except that we don't have the power to break them up into pieces that would just melt in the atmosphere, they would do slightly less damage, on a very widespread scale, that wouldn't make much of a difference in the long run. Of course, on the program I heard on the radio they were really just speculating. Because there's some 11 km or so long Asteroid that passes relatively close to Earth every 20 years, or soemthing like that.
Kain
Hitting an asteroid the size of the one on that video with a nuke would do 2 things: 1. It'd set it spinning, which would result in a planetery drill that instead of causing an explosion would have a better chance at turning Earth into a giant ball of swiss cheese. 2. Rain down radiation on those not directly in the initial death zone, causing them horrid amounts of pain and death...as compared to watching a huge ball of ice and intergalactic rock fall down on your puny head. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure which would be worse.
BongoBob
Quick, someone set this to the aerosmith song from armegeddon THE END IS NEAR! REPENT! REPENT! RE*passes out*[/bum on corner]
toms
They seemed to be talking in terms of hours, not minutes.. which impled it was maybe slowed down. but then again my japanese is almost non-existant.. so thye may have been stating times (eg: 3pm. asteroid hits. 3.03 we all die, etc..) I guess they just left big ben and athens standing for effect.. cos the shock waves would have taken them out pretty quick.
MrWally
THE END IS NEAR! REPENT! REPENT! RE*passes out*[/bum on corner] Funny you should say that... the Book of Revelations mentions a meteor hitting the earth right after the Rapture
