REDJOHNNYMIKE
The toasty place froze over and I actually started this thread (after several days of waiting and wincing from inevitable fanboy screeching:xp: ). So, anyone else actually played this yet? IMHO= In.My.Honest.Opinion. It was alright, not as spectacular as imagined, but entertaining. I had more fun exploring the O.S. than playing any of the games (people don't like it when you change the name of their console to Pimp Daddy, didn't know that until now). Of course, the first place to start is the Wiimote.... One thing I couldn't find was a menu screen for proper calibration. I want to aim the wiimote at the thing I'm trying to shoot/grab/climb, not above the tv, not below the tv. If they'd supplied two sensor bars (didn't mention...the remote works in relation to a sensor bar placed above or below the tv) for above and below they might've been able to calibrate the angle better, however I find the lack of calibration options unsatisfactory. For some reason the motion sensitivity seems to be the only thing useable in the O.S. menu (having the d-pad available would've been pretty frickin helpful!) so you basically just have to have a good feel for it or really enjoy pushing the backspace button while trying to type something. The cutout range for motion sensitivity is acceptable, you'll probably never play far enough away to notice. Some of the non-motion buttons seem to still send a signal at 20 feet (farthest I bothered checking). The motion sensitivity works well, but if you're like me (let's see how far that 80lb bag of morter can fly) it's a little to sensitive if you don't have small delicate muscles. If you have trouble getting used to it, set the sensitivity down all the way, it works so much better. I didn't use the nunchuck for anything more than a side to side motion, but I didn't like the thumbstick on it, it has the edges chiseled out at every 45 degrees so you tend to go north, northeast, or east, instead of the east-northeast direction you wanted to move. FYI, some games may use small + or - buttons as Start or Back, since it doesn't really have them. Personally I like a crapload of buttons, but it gets by with what it has. The tiny Wiimote (this thing is tiny, trust me. I actually suggested pouring lead into it to feel like your actually holding something) did manage to fit a decent rumble in with all the other tech (don't know why sony couldn't), it's not a lot, but you can feel it. The speaker did seem superfluous in the games I played. Not sure what else to say about it, if you can't get ahold of one for yourself but still have questions about it I'll be glad to try some stuff out. The console itself.... I didn't take much time to inspect the hardware ('zall bout da games:xp: ), but I'm sure you'll be able to attach all the peripherals you need. Trayless disc drive. and when you eject a game it doesn't seem to want to return to the main O.S. The games.... All I had available was WiiSports and Legend of Zelda. I didn't care much for wiisports, most of the appropriate movements seemed slightly less natural, or at the very least, less emphasized than they could've been (no matter how or where I hold the remote the bat still seems to hide the pitcher, the ball, and the strike zone:xp: ), and the lack of ingame directons that were helpful enough was annoying. Zelda was entertaining, but the control scheme felt a little clunky (I'm saying that after comfortably playing gears of war, a game where a control a 400 pound guy trying to sprint around debris:lol: ). The graphics made me wonder why they snubbed HD and why they had to make it a launch title instead of refining it more. The early parts of the game seemed like a mod of Kameo or Fable. The O.S. The operating system would have provided more entertainment if an internet connection was setup. There were menus devoted to news, shopping, weather, and media, with plenty of room for expansion. The Wii's interesting take on the Xbox 360's profile sytem... Miis (MEs) small customizable people which can show up as ingame characters, and migrate to other connected consoles and possibly even form parades (ZOMG Cutest Viruses Ever!!!111:xp: ) Don't remember much else... discuss. Sabretooth
Hah! RJM forgot that vB tricks don't work on thread titles! Your review makes the Wii look good. I like the uber-backward-compatibility idea and all, but I think the Wii would be better worth than a handful of Nintendo consoles. So far, apart from the Wii's inferior specs, the only problem I see with it is its lack of good titles. ZOMG, the fanboys kill me! WTFH!!
Astrotoy7
oh heck, Im so over consoles... still, if Lynky lets me come over one day, I'd like to have a quick go at the wiimote and see what all the hype is about. I doubt he will though mtfbwya
Lynk Former
@ Red: There is no calibration for the Wiimote, period. You either put the sensor bar above or below the TV and choose an option saying that you've put the bar in one of those two spots and the only reason those two options exist is to create a cursor displacement. The Wiimote houses a lil camera that picks up the 10 infared lights on the sensorbar, it uses this as a point of reference to create a virtual space so it knows where your Wiimote is in relation to the sensor bar. Therefore, there really is no way to calibrate it. With this in mind, some games will allow you to set the sensitivity levels, etc, though these settings are set for the individual games themselves and don't actual calibrate the Wiimote. The analog stick has always been like that with Nintendo consoles, check back to the N64 and GCN and you'll see exactly the same thing. But anyone who has played with a Nintendo console has already figured out that it's not a problem at all since it's still easy to target east-northeast anyway. The idea of the shape is so that aiming north, south, east, west, northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest is easier and more accurate. Twilight Princess is a GameCube game with Wii control functionality and it has more in common, in terms of gameplay, with The Wind Waker and is nothing like Kameo or Fable which are both just completely offensive towards TP in a comparitive sense O.O TP is running on an upgraded version of The Wind Waker engine. Oh and the Wii OS would've been much better if you had a chance to update the firmware, this is done by connecting the Wii online for the first time and allowing it to automatically update. Folks in the media who got their Wii's before everyone else got to experience the Wii OS before and after the firmware update and noticed a great improvement. Bob Lion54
I got a Wii Sunday. I have to say, I love this thing! I got Zelda (YAY!) and love it! The Wiimote wasn't that hard to get used to. I found it to work quite well with Zelda. I got Red Steel, as well. I didn't get that far into it. I tried it first to get a feel for the Wiimote but quickly switched over to Zelda. What I did play of Red Steel, I enjoyed. I ran to Walmart today and picked up Madden for my Wii. Simply put, it rocks! I like Madden in general, but this is a whole new experience. I was actually dropping back to pass in my room. The nunchuk gave me just enough cable to almost go through a full throw. I really felt like the quarterback. The running game is great too. You jerk your left hand to the right/left to juke or jerk your right hand to the right/left to throw a stiff arm. Wonderful, simply wonderful! All in all, the Wii Rocks! I need to get a wireless router so I can hook it up to the internet but have a question about that. I know I need the wireless USB attachment for the Wii, but is there a special one made for it or does any one work? (Like the ones for laptops.) Lynk Former
There is an ethernet adapter for Wii that is plugged into the Wii through its USB port.
REDJOHNNYMIKE
@Sabre, I didn't really care wether it worked or not, simply making a point about the name;) @Link, If it is designed to find it's position relative to the sensor bar, then the related location values should be able to be modified to use the 'mote at any angle you feel comfortable with. I actually set the sensitivity in the O.S. not the game, the higher sensitivities made the menus annoying. I don't remember adjusting the sensitivity ingame, just that the ingame control scheme was annoyingly imprecise. I've played most nintendo systems and never liked that cookie cutter analog stick as much as the round ones used on PS and X. Just personal opinion of course, but the early parts of the game sure seemed similar to those other titles. Don't know which influenced which, but I noticed a lot of similarities. I really would've liked to try the networking capabilities, unfortunately there was no service available. I'm sure the shopping channel (I suppose you could call the different sections channels) would provide the same features as Live Marketplace, but are the weather and news worth anything? Lynk Former
I know what you're talking about, but changing settings and calibrating the controller are two completely different things and the Wiimote's pointing device is an extremely relative thing. it's not like calibrating a joystick, because a joystick has an absolute neutral position and can only reach so far out till it stops. The Wiimote on the other hand doesn't have this barrier and there is no absolute neutral. The Wiimote wasn't designed for microscopic 1:1 accuracy because at this point in time that kind of accuracy is impossible to achieve with current technology. Ironically, I don't like the PS/Xbox analog stick cause it is perfectly round and makes it harder to find absolute north XD Twilight Princess is inspired by past Zelda titles, which came long before Kameo and Fable. REDJOHNNYMIKE
I just don't see why they can't have a menu you can access with options like "Add or subtract 20 degrees from this particular axis in it's virtual location". Doesn't seem that undoable. Sticks, LOL I'm the exact opposite:D Hey lynky, you'd probably know for sure. I thought I saw a lightgun for a couple seconds on some tv show. Was one planned for release with the wii? I think I'd preffer that to the 'mote in some situations.
Jeff
I tried to get one sunday and failed, and now things aren't looking too good for me getting one in the near future... I'm going to be going to stores a lot checking if they got any in this week now that I have a few days off, but a lot of places don't expect to get them for a while it sounds like. Either that or they have no idea when they will get them... But a friend of mine brought his into school today (yes probably a dumb thing to do) and we played it during lunch and even during our computer class. So I got to play tennis and boxing on Wii sports, and just from that I love it already. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

Commander Obi-Wan
Own it. And it is so kick-ass. Got Zelda and Call of Duty 3, since there was no Red Steel available. But, CoD3 is quite fun. The gameplay is great. Feels so real, like you are actually there. Fun game. I haven't played Zelda yet, but I will try it out.
Jeff
Isn't there a sign up list you could get on at a local store? Most places tell me they're being given out on a first-come, first-serve basis, but I haven't asked that everywhere... I checked online earlier and even amazon.com doesn't have them...

Mav
@D-Mo, Tried Ebay?I think they are selling for about double their face value on Ebay which is pretty ridiculous, don't know for sure, haven't checked, but double isn't that bad when you compare it to the PS3 which is selling for upwards of 3K at Ebay... plain stupid if you ask me. REDJOHNNYMIKE
Yeah, they're more expensive, but if you don't want to wait... My friend wasn't even interested in playing one, but he was going to spend the night in a parking lot in some other town trying get some to auction for profit, did the same for PS3:lol:
Astrotoy7
...But, CoD3 is quite fun. The gameplay is great. Feels so real, like you are actually there..... really....the devs must be awesome, recreating being scared out of your wits like that....!!! Also, Im sure the 101st Airborne etc never walked around France carrying a bit of plastic somewhat resembling a sex toy Still, COD3 looks great, just waiting for its PC release down here schnell. schnell. what cracked me up is that Wiki had to close its pages for the Wii and Ps3 because fanboys were vandalising them. Im sick of that console fanboy mentality. So immature *hugs PC, plays NWN, types report for work, researches stuff for uni, syncs with PDA* mtfbwya

Doesn't seem that undoable. Because it'd make things extremely complicated and go against everything that Nintendo is trying to achieve with the ease of use kinda jazz of Wii. But there is a solution to your problem... why don't you put the sensor bar in a different location in relation to where you're playing? The sensor bar is the center of the Wiimotes universe, it is the reference point after all. Hey lynky, you'd probably know for sure. I thought I saw a lightgun for a couple seconds on some tv show. Was one planned for release with the wii? I think I'd preffer that to the 'mote in some situations. It's not an actual lightgun, just a gun attachment for the Wiimote. REDJOHNNYMIKE
@Lynk, That's why the options would be way back in the system menus (where the people who want it simple probably don't bother with). Also, I play in an arcade (Buy gaming stuff? Are you mad?! ) and while they usually take most of the advice I offer (as official mascot and bouncer) it would complicate things for everyone if I started doing things like mounting the sensor bar in the ladies' restroom, erecting elaborate mirror arrays, or wearing on of those beer can helmets with a ten foot sensor bar holding pole sticking off the front. Ahhh, nice accessory. Like I said I only saw it for a couple seconds and didn't notice the details. @Astro, Now see, if nintendo had gone the uberpowered route like sony and microsoft, then we'd probably be seeing gib'n'spray like Gears has;)
Lynk Former
It's not that complicated redjohn, just move the sensor bar a little to the right or something like that... that's all I meant XD jeebus. Also, if Nintendo went for the uberpowered route then they would only have a quarter of the third party support they have now... or less.

REDJOHNNYMIKE
@Lynk, Maybe I wasn't clear. My problem is that you have to adjust your vertical angle to aim at the sensor bar (unnatural) instead of what you're trying to hit onscreen (natural). Left or right, over or under are not the issue. And unless it's possible to create a custom definition of the virtual environment then that fancy little gun contraption is a waste of development time as you'll not be aiming anywhere near what the target you're seeing. What you want... *=target Screen|........................... Screen|*......................... ----- (Your aim) Screen|........................... What you get...
