"I think perhaps we have underestimated one another," said the woman after considering his words. "You are stronger than you seem."

"It appears we have," he said with a light smile. The woman walked between two wagons and knelt down, closing her eyes, she told him she trusted him, and that he could call her with a whistle.

He smiled and continued his patrol, he felt better now that someone trusted him more.

After some time he came around for maybe a fifth time and stopped, he looked over at her. "Excuse me, could you look into camp and tell me whether most everyone's gone to sleep or not," he asked, squinting his eyes as he looked into the dim lit camp.

As dawn broke over the horizon, clear and bright in its brilliancy, Irithoi moved about the camp, banging a pot.

"Wakey wakey, everyone!" he called, "C'mon! Up up up! 'Tis a beautiful morning to begin traveling at five AM!"

Kyo woke from his light sleep as Irithoi passed near by, quickly running a hand through his hair as he sat up. He stoked the fire with new fuel, blowing on it a bit before folding the blanket up and giving a stretch.

Inside her tent, Aya opened her eyes. Katsuro was still sleeping, curled up in a blanket like a contented cat. Aya grinned. She’d let him sleep for now.

She yawned, then rose quietly, and poked her head outside. The sun had just risen and the world looked renewed. It was starting out to be a nice day. She inhaled a deep breath of the crisp morning air, then exhaled it slowly. “Shepherd’s delight,” she said under her breath.

She saw Kyo stoking the fire.

“Good morning!” she said cheerily. “Sleep well?”

"No problem," Aya replied as she started to gather the bowls and the pot from last night's supper. "My father always said, 'you can never have enough blankets when you're on the road.'" She paused, and the corner of her mouth twisted up in a wry grin. "Not sure what he meant by that, but..." She shrugged. "So, think it's ok for me to go to the stream?" She looked warily out into the scrubby wilderness outside of camp. "Need to clean these before I pack them all up again."

Aya let out a little laugh as they walked. "Well, if there are, please let them wash the dishes before you scare them away with that sword of yours."

Reaching the stream, Aya worked her way down along the bank until she came to a small shallow pool. "That looks like a good spot," she said, picking a careful path to it. She sat herself upon a large boulder and was just about to dip the first of the bowls into the water, when she let out a little yelp of terror.

Aya turned to face him, her brow creased. "Why didn't you tell me that I looked like some sort of Banshee witch?" She looked down again at her reflection. "My hair's a right rat's next of a mess."

She removed the decorative pin holding up what was left of her braid, and her dark brown hair cascaded over her shoulders in a tangle of loose curls. Holding the pin in her mouth, she fingercombed her locks, and began to deftly braid them up again. "Not dat I'm overly concerned about appearances," she said through clenched teeth, "but..." She tied off the braid, then pinned it neatly back into place. "I don't want to scare people away from browsing my wares. It's not good for my business."

She let out a quick sigh of resignation then started to wash the dishes.

Takara's eyes opened and she laughed softly at Irithoi's yelling. Though she had not actually slept, she was fully rested and she stood. Xan, she saw was still circling the wagons and was just coming to her again.

"I think everyone shall be awake soon," she told him. "Thanks for your hard work through the night. I'm curious now... when do you sleep?"

-----------------------

Katsuro's eyes opened slowly, just after Aya left the tent trailed by Kyo. "Sleeping, am I?" he whispered. With a grin, he folded his blanket neatly and left the tent in search of his mother. Now that he awoke to discover her still absent from the tent, he knew she had not merely gone to speak with Irithoi the night before as Kyo had suggested. But that still didn't answer where she'd gone... or how Kyo had known the codes somehow present as triggers within his mind.

"I like people," she said matter-of-factly to Kyo while she worked. "And, bandits aside, most folk are good people for the most part. Met lots of them travelling with my father.” She grinned. “He liked people, too. He always said, ‘if there’s one thing you can never have enough of, Aya, it’s friends.’” She smiled reminiscently. “He had lots of friends. All over.”

She paused then. “You know, if he had been less concerned about his friends and more concerned about money, my family would have been better off and I wouldn’t be here right now trying to earn a living.” She looked over her shoulder at Kyo and smiled broadly. “And, I wouldn’t have met you, or the others. Or experienced those Volcano S’mores,” she added. “And that was a culinary experience worthy of remembrance.”

Dishes done, she filled up a pot with fresh water. “Speaking of food… let’s go and get some breakfast. I expect Irithoi wants us to get moving pretty soon.”

Aya took pause as Kyo took the pot to carry for her. "Thanks," she said appreciatively.

She walked back with him in silence. Not that she didn't have anything to say, but she rather enjoyed the sounds of a camp waking up--harnesses clinking, tents being folded, and people quietly murmuring...and Irithoi bellowing.

Kyo's lips twitched in a smile as he watched the camp begin to stir, Irithoi still moving around, banging the pot incessantly. He was probably going to have a headache from that...

"So..." he said, "What's on the breakfast menu?"

((OOC: Ugh...sorry about the lame post. I have less than two braincells to rub together at the moment -.-))

"Well," she said as they reached the campfire again, "if you want to set this pot on what's left of the fire, Kyo, I'll go and see if I can scrounge up some eggs from someone. Bound to be somebody that has some extra ones."

She set down the clean dishes on his folded blanket, but before she left, she cast a glance at her tent. "Better check on the boy first though." She opened the tent flap, thinking to find Katsuro still sleeping. But...

"He's gone!" Aya said with alarm. She scanned the general vincinity, then looked worriedly at Kyo. "We've got to find him. He's probably gone looking for his mother. But..." Her eyes scanned further afield. Takara wasn't in sight either. "What if he wanders out of the camp looking for her? What if he gets hurt, or falls in the stream, or..." She sighed. "Some sitter I am," she chastised herself.

Aya nodded. While Kyo left to find the boy, Aya wandered over to the wagon of a merchant she thought would probably have some eggs. After a bit of haggling, Aya walked away with a basket full.

She retrieved bacon, tea, coffee, and oats from her food satchel (after giving Bob a few handfuls of oats for his breakfast) and began preparing the first meal of the day. Breakfast was important to her--it was fuel for the rest of the day and she didn't skimp on portions.

As the oatmeal bubbled, and the eggs cooked, and the tea and coffee brewed, and the bacon sizzled, she inhaled deeply. There was no better scent in the morning. If Kyo couldn't find the boy, the aroma of breakfast might.

Carwyn had never been one to sleep in one position all night. As such, this morning he was sprawled across his blanket, which had come undone overnight. His limbs all akimbo, from afar he looked more like a rag doll than a human being.

Opening one eye groggily, he looked around and spotted Aya over the campfire, cooking. Sniffing the air, his other eye fluttered open as he caught the aroma coming from whatever she was cooking. Raising his head up, his hair all tousled and sticking up everywhere, he said, "I smell bacon."
