Don't forget that you can check out the Beta volunteer thread if you need someone to beta your fic, but don't wait til the last minute or you won't have time to do any revisions your beta suggests. But I think it'll be okay to change characters, settings and the text matter, while keeping the base story intact. It's obviously your choice if you want to submit something incomplete or not, but it probably won't be as well received.
