Sabretooth
Caught this on Digg some time ago. To summarize, members of the Pakistani government are pissed off at the English for giving Rushdie a knighthood.
SilentScope001
The people who have historically hated his books have been Indira Gandhi, and a bunch of angry fanatics who think they're living in the 7th century, the credibility isn't there. No, the reviews I read historically hated the book because it was too long, the plot was not cohevise, and it was just an excuse for the author to rant on the soapbox (one page of story, five pages of commentary). None of the reviews I read actually talk about the offending passages at all. But I'll read the book, and then I'll make my desicion.

Still though, The Satanic Verses is only one of his Novels, he's written 9. Obviously somebody was able to read far enough into it to be offended so that says something. HerbieZ
Caught this on Digg some time ago. To summarize, members of the Pakistani government are pissed off at the English for giving Rushdie a knighthood. Il say. I opened the paper this morning to a full two page spread of the Union Jack being burned by 4 people in turbans. Why can't they burn a picture of the queen or something, i would'nt be bothered by that. It's always some place that goes one over and sets fire to a flag. If only they knew i had a stash of union jack cigars. They'd sell well in pakistan right now. Slow burners too.

As much as we personally may dislike the 'burning' of a nations flag... it is a form of free speech, and is thusly allowed (Unless your country doesn't allow free speech.) @ On-Topic, way to go Sir Rushdie! Samnmax221
Well it looks like there won't be any backing down over this. One thing that has annoyed me through this has been people whining about how this puts them in danger. Never mind the person who is willing to initiate violence because they feel offended, blame the author who expressed his beliefs.
SilentScope001
Eh. I have seen the exact same people who defend Salam Rushdie also criticze the protesters' right to protest his work, in a peaceful manner. Free speech does work both ways, you know. You can't censor calls for censorship.

The protesters are being criticized because its none of their business.
Sabretooth
What I don't get about the protesters is, what the hell are they protesting against? Knighthood is a British award, not an international one. Britain (or heck, Queenie) is expressing their respect to Rushdie with the knighthood. The people burning Brit flags are just being silly - if they hate the country, why bother with what goes on in there?
Darth InSidious
DI, words last for as long as people care about them. Eventually, they'll die too. People will always care about great works. They will care about them, because they are great, not the other way around. Tell it to Ptah-hetep, Ani, Khety, Homer, Herodotus, Thucydides, Aristophanes, Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides, Plautus, Terence, Tacitus, Suetonius, Livy, Pliny, Seneca, Terence, Plautus, Plutarch, Ovid, Vergil, Horace, tell it to Shakespeare and Marlowe, to Cervantes and to Chaucer, to Stern and to Hardy, because I think you're speaking a lot of nonsense, and I think they'd agree

HerbieZ
Strong words there, heavily misinterpreted. But then where is the line of freedom of speech Mr Rushdie... i mean Mr Sun.

Negative Sun
Not that I disagree, but I wouldn't say that loudly if I were you. Why? I thought we allowed free speech, unless LF is run from one of those countries...Which I don't believe it is. Saying a country sucks isn't exactly racist is it? France sucks, so what? Emperor Devon
Saying a country sucks isn't exactly racist is it? France sucks, so what? France is nothing but the French people and the property/land they own. Saying the country sucks is saying thousands of people all suck, which is pretty unlikely when you're talking about that many. On topic: the now-Sir Rushdie more than deserves it. Gotta admire his courage in the face of a ten-year death sentence (and his books, which I have been told are excellent). Pavlos
Saying a country sucks isn't exactly racist is it? France sucks, so what? It's a general comment... and to generalise is never a good idea . By saying "France sucks" you're implying that the people of France suck too - as a whole. I'm sure that there are plenty of awful people in France, as there are in any place, but not all of them are like that. I see what you're saying and you have every right to say it... I'd just phrase it in a manner that cannot be construed as, um, flame bait. But I'm glad they've given Mr. - uh - Sir Rushdie a knighthood - it's nice to see that the honours system still stands for something.
