Astrotoy7
A few of you may already be participating, or have heard of the folding@home project at Stanford University. Folding@home is a distributed computing project. Very basically, it uses some of your CPUs processing power and combined with many other pcs doing the same thing, emulates a "supercomputer" that can be tasked with complex computational models. In this instance, the processing power is going towards understanding protein folding to understand disease processes, and hence work towards a cure for them. We have now created our very own team representing LFN, so if you would like to contribute, please feel free to join The software allows you to monitor how much work units you(and your team) have contributed to. Many organisations, forum and tech sites have teams up and running and have contributed a great amount of processing power for this wonderful cause. THE SCIENCE What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery. Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes. For more info and a vid from project devs > check the FAQ * * * Interested in joining ?? >>> see this dedicated thread at LFN Tech Support >> setup instructions HERE at LFN Tech forum. Please post any specific setup queries in that thread Thank you in advance folding@team_LFN
jrrtoken
Ah yes, this project. Don't they have a version that runs on the PS3?
Negative Sun
Ah yes, this project. Don't they have a version that runs on the PS3? Correct, and the PS3 hardware pwns at folding too. Ati and (recently) nVidia have folding clients as well to make your GPU do some of the folding too... I'm already folding with another team called CustomPC (currently #8 in the World Rank, soon to be #7!), but to be honest, my Athlon XP 2600+ @ 1.9Ghz running at 50% for folding (cause of heat issues) isn't going to make an earth-shattering difference for TeamLFN or any other team for that matter

I ditched sudhian(2 htpcs) and overclockers AU(gaming pc), who also kick much foldin a$$. LFN comes first, of course. mtfbwya

ChAiNz.2da
I can't dedicate my 2 major home systems to this project, but I have setup one of my spares to help run things along. It was getting neglected anyways.. hehehe Intel P4 2.8GHz/2.8GHz - Hyper-Thread 4 GB Ram Not much, but every little bit helps If I can figure out work's proxy settings, I'll try and set this up at work too.. no promises though EDIT: Just a quick draft of a possible logo (I like yours Neg. Sun ) 320x80, .png, 48kb: If anyone would like to muck around with this to make it better (mine's quick and dirty), I've uploaded a collection of files/fonts here: (217kb) http://www.jumpstationz.com/teamlfn/Team-LFN_files.rar Has the layered Master logo file, the Episode 1 font, and a layered master file of just the LA guy. No fancy photoshop filters used, so anyone with PS should be able to open it no problem (install the font first). FYI, from now on, I'll be posting in the TeamLFN Thread about this project.. but I figured the AHTO exposure might help for those that don't visit the Tech Forums. Astrotoy7
Some extra info re- folding options. 1. You can use your Graphics card to fold. This can give you some amazing scores.. Those with an ATI 2xxx, 3xxx or 4xxx series, or nvidia 8xxx, 9xxx or 2xx series card are encourgaed to try the GPU client. More setup details at tech forum link above 2. You can use your PS3 to fold. The PS3 actually has an amazing FAH interface and visualisation and is much quicker than an ordinary pc at FAH tasks. mtfbwya

ChAiNz.2da
Attention F@H image sig users... major graphics changes. Because my album was filling up, I have a created a new album strictly for f@h images. In turn, this will change the url locations for the images... Please update your sig images to point to the correct version(s). I've made it real easy with copy-n-paste code. I have also addressed the issue of transparency failure in case anyone is having problems. http://www.lucasforums.com/group.php?groupid=43 I plan on deleting the images from the random folder, but I'll wait till everyone has had a chance to update. So everyone who was thinking of signing up.. now you get cool swag! We've done the grinding part enough to be ranked high enough for the sig image badge of honor Join Now! ------------------- Also, since we have a dedicated F@H thread here: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=190854 I'm un-stickying this one. Please address any F@H issues/questions at the above thread. Thanks!
