LordOfTheFish
Sometimes when songs come out I tend to think the lyrics and sometimes the rhythm have potential to make a great song, but the singer/band doesn't really fit. So that's why I like covers. Some songs have been covered multiple times, and they still aren't as good as the original. And some songs are covered with only a singer and a guitar, and it sounds awesome. A few I like are- Heartless - by Kanye West Cover by William Fitzsimmons: (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) Original: (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) Working Class Hero- by John Lennon Cover by Green Day (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) Original (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) Are there any covers you prefer?
Ztalker
I hate covers ever since the arrogant Jessica Simpson attempted to cover Robbie Williams' song Angels. Which was, kinda my favourite song. It's stealing and showing you have no creative mind whatsoever. Or no mind at all in the case of miss Simpson. mimartin
One of my favorite cover songs is Cruel to be Kind. It was Nick Lowe’s only hit, but was redone by Letters to Cleo for the movie soundtrack 10 Things I hate about You. (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) Letter to Cleo also covered I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick for the same soundtrack and Dangerous Type by The Cars for The Craft soundtrack. It's stealing and showing you have no creative mind whatsoever. Doesn’t that all depend on who is doing the cover? Would you say Jimi Hendrix showed no creativity whatsoever with All Along the Watchtower? What about Eric Clapton’s version of After Midnight? Can anyone even name the original artist of these covered songs? Bob Dylan and JJ Cale

These Boots are Made for Walkin' was awful, although most of it was rewritten so it wasn't quite as bad as it could have been. Still ****, however. As for good covers - I thought Johnny Cash's version of Nine Inch Nails' Hurt was excellent. Sorry, I haven't got time to find the videos.

But it's still not their own song. They both did spin it in such a way that it's different and not necessarily worse though. I do see good and bad covers. It's still not original though. Not that I don't enjoy them though. But when someone has written and performed it him/herself it feels...better. Imo.
Gurges-Ahter
I also really like Johnny Cash's "Hurt", but definitely prefer the NIN version. Cash has something about his style that is just amazing, but NIN captures the haunting feeling of the song better than Cash did. It's something about the timing that's "off" in the NIN version that makes it better, IMO.
Samuel Dravis
I like almost every song on RATM's cover CD, Renegades, better than the originals... (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) I have nothing against covers, though they're usually bad. Sometimes you'll find a gem, though. (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) But when someone has written and performed it him/herself it feels...better. Imo. While I would tend to agree, covers can introduce a new generation to a past generations music. Example, I never listened to Motown, but Kim Wilde’s version of You Keep Me Hangin’ On introduced me to The Supremes which lead me to discover Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Martha and the Vandellas… (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) (This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.) Personally, like adamqd’s posted cover, I like the cover better than the original. I didn’t even know China Girl was a cover. Salzella
Covers can be wayyyy better. Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah anyone? Hell, Rufus Wainwright's version is better aswell. Alexandra Burke's, however, is a strong argument against cover versions as a whole.
Totenkopf
I prefer Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower to Dylan's.

HdVaderII
Personally, I think that Dylan's original All Along the Watchtower is one of the best songs ever, but Hendrix's version is pretty good too.

I didn't say he didn't co write it . while we're giving out facts not pertaining to whether one version is better than the other... Bowie released it as a B-Side to "Lets Dance" so half the royalties would go to Pop, to help him with money troubles resulting from Drug addiction. deathdisco
Just debating the song's status as a 'cover'. I didn't say he didn't co write it . while we're giving out facts not pertaining to whether one version is better than the other... Bowie released it as a B-Side to "Lets Dance" so half the royalties would go to Pop, to help him with money troubles resulting from Drug addiction. Good thing too. I like Iggy Pop but Bowie's version is far superior. Bowie can Do no wrong IMO... well, Labyrinth was pretty heinous but, yea. QFT
