NPR just put out an article on the Sounds of Star Wars. Interesting read.

 

Perhaps the most iconic, and most frequently imitated, sound from the Star Wars universe is the sound of the lightsaber.

 

"I think it really was the first sound that I made for Star Wars," Burtt says — and it was one whose source he stumbled upon almost accidentally.

Sound effects really is an aspect were SW is above all else.

Really wished that would have went into detail on how they did Chewie’s voice. I remember watching how they did it once and found it interesting, but I’ve forgotten how they did it. Guess I may need to purchase the book.

I always thought it was amusing that TIE fighter sounds were altered elephant trumpets.

Quite the read, indeed. Sounds in Star Wars are sheer brilliance. Possibly why I would hum a lot of these sounds in my childhood, and, erm, even today when I'm distracted.

 

They were nice, they were organic, they were addictive and I'm living proof. Good job, Mr. Burtt.

Amazing how well they did it and how well they turned out. If the sounds had turned out any differently, it would have really just detracted from the immersion. The sounds just all seem like they fit!
