Is Star Wars Gallactic Battlegrounds any good?

Well GBG is good enough to keep my and Vagabond's attention for a five hour game. Good thing LEC were kind enough to include a save game feature for multiplayer. I'm sure we'll play more GBG going forward. Fun especially for me since I've never played Age of Kings.

Game is probably worth the $, although LEC could have done a better job with the in-game music support. Supposedly the in-game music is excellent, but, for whatever reasons, many people (including me) cannot get it working.

I still find that Homeworld, Cataclysm, The Moon Project, and Ground Control blow this game out of the water (graphically, at least).

If u like AoE then you will love this. GB is AoE just different Star Wars graphics. Just because LucasArts use an engine that doesn't mean they have to use the whole idea of AoE. LucasArts got really stack. all the researches are the same with different names. There are new feature like flying ships, few new tech etc. LucasArts could have made it more different from AoE.

if u dont have homeworld, get that instead.

i have turnned up the music thing but i still have ni in-game music. my soundcard is new and my CD is also new. not sure what the prob. is.

GB is somewhat differentiable to aok....

first of all, aircraft....

you have fighters, bombers, and transport ships

this creates many problems for those who don't adapt and create AA units...(anti air)...the fighters are awesome at hit and running...(like the cav archer of aok, except better upgrades).....in addition, the bombers are quite good at taking out buildings and surprising your enemy with air attacks when they least expect it....

second, more ranged units, faster

in aok, you couldnt get a ranged unit (except town center) until the feudal age (= TL2).... in GB, you get ranged units right off the bat.....this creates a huge TL1/TL2 rush situation! .... most of the feudal rushes involve ranged units of some sort, and with the advent of ranged units in TL1, your opponent's carbon collector's are very weak. this makes you and your opponents constantly trying to hedge against rushes.....imo, this makes for more interesting games...

the more ranged units, and in turn less melee units makes for one more interesting twist, heavy weapons are less vulnerable. since a majority of the games units are ranged, it is very likely that your opponent will have more ranged units than melee units.....this makes them more susceptible to attack, and a very interesting game....siege weapons are very powerful in aok....heavy weapons in GB are even more powerful.....except for one thing....

third, shields

the introduction of shield generators to GB (and righfully so, since it IS SW) provides a strange rift in the AoK strategy....units and buildings under a shield gen's range slowly build up shields. for a building, when they are attacked, its true HP remains unhurt until its shield HP tick down to zero....only then will it be harmed...max shields are the same as its hit points, so adding shields effectively doubles a building's hitpoints (in addition to automatically repairing it (the shields) slowly.).... units, on the other hand, can be harmed slightly (HP) even if their shields aren't down to zero, so the functionality of shields for units is limited...

well, that's about all that i can think of now, so i hope this helps anyone who has played aok and is thinking of GB....

and to those who have played neither, personally, i would buy the AoK and AoK:TC pack together because they are better games IMO.....

i have all 3 and i am patiently awaiting next september for AoM

I think moon project is great. You can customize all of your units. Start with a number of chassis templates, and then add custom weapons, shields, and specials.

Game has deformable 3d terrain. You can dig trenches or build up embankments and walls. Weather effects, such as snow, rain, fog. Lighting game progress through day and night. Land, sea, and airborne units. Also subterranean units. You can script the behavior of your units. Fully 3d. Great gfx.

Yes, I too thought the GBG demo was a bit short...compared to other demos. I mean, I've recently played demos of Cossacks and Age Of Empires II...and I don't think any session lasted under 6 hours. I got through the GBG demo in about an hour...and that was because I was taking it really slow. :D

I do hope the full game is as good as suggested, because it may be one of only a few RTS titles that I'm considering getting in the near future. Not bad for someone who's never really liked the genre before now.. ;)
