On The Implausibility of the DeathStar Trash Compactor.

The Death Star clearly has a garbage-disposal problem. Given its size and massive personnel, the amount of waste it generates — discarded food, broken equipment, excrement, and the like — boggles the imagination. That said, I just cannot fathom how an organization as ruthless and efficiently-run as the Empire would have signed off on such a dangerous, unsanitary, and shoddy garbage-disposal system as the one depicted in the movie.

Here are the problems, as I can ascertain them, with the Death Star's garbage-disposal system:

maybe they compacted it so it could be hauled to a planet sized land fill, it stands to reason that you would not put a trash compactor on the interior if you wanted to eject it into space. besided, as he said, it would be hazardous... they probably compacted to for storage... and the vents were obviously there to put dead prisoners down, or live ones they didnt like... as for the dinoga, i belive it had a hole, and a seperate compartment to live in... thus avoiding the the wall getting stuck theory... and the two movable walls, well that was for visual effect, Half Life had the same dual moving wall thing, which also, enffiecnt, was more difficult to code... so its all for effect... sorry, what was that about too much time on your hands?? its only 3:30 in the morining, and i only have class in 5 hours, what else do i have to do :D

oh, and a rodian to english dictionary, hmm interesting... i might buy it :D a little reminescent of the Klingon language thingy for trekkes though, doncha think?

Yes, there are many emotional stops along the way through the NJO. Heh, you nearly cried over Vector Prime, wait till you hit Star by Star. Muahahahahahahaha. Enjoy.

Well hell, if one wants to over-analyze the Death Star's trash compactor, then in reality I seriously doubt that the Empire would be so environmentally conscious that they'd even compact their trash in the first place. They'd probably be much more likely to just dump their garbage straight into space, untreated. The whole premise of such a pointless article is baseless if one is looking for real-world rationalities.

But hey, why stop there? Why not disect the Force, Midichlorians, and lightsabers? Good luck

P.S. What do you mean that's you? Literally?

I was extremly irritated that they killed Chewbacca. Further the Vong, although interested in their own right, seem very out of place in the Star Wars universe, in my opinion. Anyway, Vector Prime was the last Star Wars book I've read, and I'll likely not read any more of the NJO books.

Standard author-making-gut-wrenching-story protocol. First, the good guys seem invincible (pre NJO stuff) then, when they become complacent, they realize that they aren't invincible after all. Then, follows a downward spiral where they are felled to their knees before they can make a miraculous come back. This makes it intense and seem hopeless for the heros, so when they finally get back into their groove, you are more charged than ever to see the bad guys eat some dust, finally.

But still, this guy has too much time on his hands to actually write and article about it, I mean, for crying out loud it's Star Wars nothing in it is real, and I don't care how implausibile the Death Star's trash compacter is, it's Star Wars, as long as it's not too corny or anything I'm ok.

Killing off of some of the basic Republic Heros, in a very contrived scenario doesn't seem very credible to me. You're going to try to tell me that Chewie was able to save Solo's kids, but was unable, with all his strength, to jump up and climb aboard the boarding ramp? Come on, that's simply absurd.

To prove one's point, if one needs to kill off thousands, maybe millions of Republic Troops, decimate their fleets, or obliterate a world or two, fine. But it's disgusting and short-sighted to kill off a Hero just to say, "Oooo...look, these bad guys are tough". Am I saying that Heroes never die? Of course not, but not like this. Chewie's death was cheap, casual, and melodramatic.

Are you entitled to like NJO? Sure. Am I entitled to dislike it? Again, sure.

I will remind everyone that the Star Wars universe is not the Star Trek universe with it's huge rivaling empires. It's a galaxy that is mostly ruled by the New Republic, so there should not many if any rival empires in the galaxy.

And intergalactic travel? Let's be honest here - if a civilization was technologically advanced enough to master that then there would be no contest at all, and no story here.

NJO is not the Star Wars universe that captivated my imagination, and I refuse to recognize and support it.
