Vagabond
Not exactly Star Wars related, but is nevertheless interesting. Fox is going to create a movie based on the Alien -vs- Predator games, which were based on the Alien -vs- Predator books (which are a good read, by the way). You can read the press release here: http://www.cnn.com/2002/SHOWBIZ/Movies/07/15/film.alien.reut/index.html
Hanch Saode
Sounds damn cool!! Though I am not a special fan of either the movies... But wonder if it will ruin the fans view on the films?? Or will they with arm wide-open take the movie with a big smile and: "WELCOME!" ??

BCanr2d2
Looks like the studios have run out of ideas again....... Oh well, they will probably have some ordinary scripts, lack originality. I'd rather see something brand new, rather than the same ideas rehashed..... They started this ages ago, when they had the Frankenstien V Werewolf V Dracula movies in the '30's............ Vagabond
I thought the same thing, until I broke down and read some of the Alien -vs- Predator novels - it's not what you're thinking - not the cheesy Frankenstien -vs- Dracula cliche. Rather, it's more of the classic Aliens-type of movie, complete with Colonial Marines , with a few Predators tossed in the mix. It's really well done, assuming the movie will be anything like the novels, and the games which said novels are based on. And with this movie in the works, I can't help but wonder if a new AvP game is in the works

Lord_FinnSon
You do realize, Paul(NOT P.T. Anderson who made Boogie Nights and Magnolia) Anderson doesn't have to base his script entirily on games or original comics, but instead only take the basic idea from them. So, we can't be sure what kind of movie it's going to be(even though, as a concept idea it's much much better than Alien: Resurrection ever was), but if Paul's other movies(Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, Soldier & Resident Evil) are any indication, I have a bad feeling about this... That also has me worried. Having seen both Soldier and Event Horizon, I thought they were both very average films with plots that didn't really make a great deal of sense, and endings that were very weak. I thoroughly enjoyed Alien and Aliens, but the 3rd and 4th in the series didn't do much for me. Scott and Cameron are simply superb directors, and it'll be hard for anyone else at the helm to make the same kind of visceral impact in this arena. Having said that, some directors can make excellent movies, even if they've had flops or have been simply average in the past. How many people would have put Peter Jackson in the frame for the LOTR adaptation, considering his horror-flick history? If someone's passionate enough about a project, then the magic starts to work. Unfortunately, as with many game-to-movie and similar franchises, the primary aim is to milk a cash-cow created by a loyal fan base, often to the detriment of quality. There are exceptions, but too few at the moment. Loyalty to the fan-base can just be thrown out of the window (as in Alien 3), or they can spend so much time trying to keep fans happy that they stifle creativity and originality. Somehow they need to find a balance between the two, and while it's sometimes good to bring something completely new to the mix, they should also sit back and look carefully at what made other films in the series work so well. I have to say I liked both Predator and Predator 2, and I've read some of the novels in the Predator and Aliens series, which were well executed. I can only hope they don't rely too much on special FX to carry an AvP movie, because although that aspect is very important, the roots of this franchise (Alien/Aliens, Predator) had some strong character development and solid story concepts at their heart. Simply throwing Aliens, Predators and Marines into a boiling pot and see if it makes a potent brew isn't going to cut it - nor will endless rewrites at the hands of a committe of executives. In short, they need a strong cast, a solid and credible plot, and an aversion to introducing too many new concepts. Why has Bond lasted so long, even though it regurgitates the same familiar concepts? Because it's what people want to see - they expect nice cars, nice girls, madmen and outlandish henchmen, all shaken not stirred. They need to do the same for the Alien franchise, IMHO. You don't need newborns and genetic hybrid clones to sell these movies - just credible use of the existing villains, and leading characters you can really relate to. Personally, I'd like to see a return to the Aliens mould, where you get to know a bunch of flesh-and-blood down-to-earth hardened marines, and then sympathise as they gradually get torn to shreds, and shout encouragement as they get their own back... Just IMHO.
Lord_FinnSon
Well, if these "executives" were any wiser, they would hire John McTiernan to direct the movie. He made first Predator(and of course first and third Die Hard), so I think he could easily visualize the "marine action" John Cameron introduced in Aliens AND knows what made Predator so interesting character. As a sidenote, it would be more interesting if Predator was more prominent character this time around and not totally mysterious hunter; games made me realize how cool he actually is with all that weaponry and attitude. I don't know how people would see it, but I personally could even go for a movie where Predator actually IS the main character while marines, scientists and other humans do all the speaking and necessary explanation that we need to know. He basically just comes in, does his job and leaves with couple Alien heads/tails as souvenirs for his clan.
Vagabond
Hey, StormHammer, nice to see you! I was beginning to wonder if Mr. Reaper had paid you a house call. Thank goodness not ...hope you're on the mend, and that we'll be seeing more of you in the future On the topic of this thread, I agree with everything you said, StormHammer. Everything - I could have written it myself - Alien/Aliens/Predator - those movies are the foundation of any AvP movie. And they were successful, not simply because of any special effects - heck, Alien had mediocre effects at best. No, what will put Fox back on track to have a sustainable franchise is to come up with a good story in the vein of the three originals - not some cockamamy ca-ca like Aliens 3/Resurrection. On a small tangent - one thing I hated about Alien 3 was that all the people who had struggled to survive in Aliens were just casually killed off so that they could contrive some artificial reason to lead into the story for Alien 3. So Newt, Hicks, and even Bishop - they were "expendable" for the crap that was Alien 3. It's like nothing that was fought for in Aliens even mattered - it nullfied or disregarded that entire movie for a terribly bizarre detour into a horrible script. Anyway, I'm hoping - praying - that the AvP movie will be more in the vein of the AvP novels or even the original Aliens Trilogy - Earth Hive, Nighmare Assylum, and The Female War - three excellent Aliens novels, and I highly recommend them. Also, there are three Alien -vs- Predator novels, which are very good as well. If the movies are anything like these well-written books, then the Aliens franchise will have stepped back from the abyss of insanity, and gotten back on track to its roots. Let us hope that the powers that be actually have a clue.
