Cable or DSL?

It kind of depends on what company you go through. I have zero complaints about mine (although my parents are only paying for the absolute slowest cable you can get... 400kbps down, 128kbps up). I ping about 50-120 depending on how far away the server is. Internet is fast and always on. I highly recommend it. But if you're gonna game on it (and you have Win 9x). Then you might want a little program called mspeed. Very helpful. Actually it's helpful for 56k and DSL too. Allows you to easily switch between settings for fast downloads, and settings for low pings.

They are not the same.

DSL travels through a phone line, the same line that 56k travels in (thus meaning slower than cable speeds)

Cable travels through cable, the sname line that TV images tavel though, meaning that it is faster than DSL.

'Nuff said.

Darth Darth (that is a very strange name.....) don't listen to anything else but his: cabel is better, thats all you need to know...)

Actually no, it depends on the company and the area your in, but generally, cable is faster and better.

Close, but...

DSL travels through a different section of the phone line. 56k is dial-up, DSL is not.

A problem with CABLE: cable servers don't have the bandwith that DSL servers have. Plus some networking HUBS have been having problems with certain types of cable routers.

Metaphor: DSL is like an Aircraft carrier while CABLE is like a destroyer. Some cable servers run faster, but if too many users are abord, there is mass LAG! DSL has a much higher bandwith and doesn't suffer from these problems.

Whichever is cheaper.

i think they fairly similar

and yes phone lines dont mean 56k... u can go faster just not with a 56k modem (duh) and a standard dial up

we have broadband over here which does 512kbs over a phone line

dunno what speeds the other run at

just try to pick 1 over 128kbs down and u should be fine for gaming

(says the 56ker)

Doesn't DSL use a different line entirely? 8 wire lines, like CAT-5 and uses RJ-45 jacks, I think. Regular telephone lines only have 4 wires, positive negative and two grounds. Totally different then 8 wire, which has a few transmit and recieve lines, and such, with extra insulation and twisted pairs for insulation. Much more involved then a simple copper wire in the phone line. Also, the further away from the hub you are on a DSL line, the slower your speed you will be. Which means if you are first on the line, you got a fast line. If you are last on the line, you're getting the sloppy seconds. DSL depends on location in relation to the hub. Cable is gonna be the same speed where ever you are on the line. That's a factor I would look at when deciding. If I'm ass last on the line with DSL, I'd go cable. If I'm first, well, I'd pick the cheapest service.

Can't vouch for or against DSL. Never used it before. But my cable runs great. Fast downloads. Good, constant connection. Even when it's acting "slow" it's still much faster than a 56k. At least in my area at any rate. The slowest download I've ever gotten was a rate of 20k/s, which is roughly 4 times the speed of a 56k. On average when I download off of others in WinMX and other such programs I get an average rate of 100k/s. But I think that's also attributed to THEIR connection, rate of ping, how many routes the transfer is taking before it reaches me, etc. Because your download rate will also depend on the speed of the place you're downloading from. Off of high broadband sites I often get up to 350k/s. As for connectivity, it's generally pretty steady. My modem has disconnected a few times, and it drives my spoiled ass crazy. But honestly, it's NOTHING compared to the BS I used to put up with when my connection was 56k. I used to get disconnected on a daily basis or at least every two days with my dialup. My cable has probably disconnected on an average of once every 3 months, if even that. Well worth the money spent on it.

DSL runs on standard 24 guage, 4 conductor bell wire (phone cord). It runs into an external DSL modem and out to a PC or networking hub using the catagory 5 (rj45) lines. The signal runs in the telephone lines on a higher channel.

It depends on what you are after. In many cases, ADSL is a lot better value for money than cable. I have recently got cable here in Australia, where we still lag behind in the competition stakes where ADSL and cable are still relatively expensive compared to 56K.

Like many things, it depends if you are prepared to pay for a faster DSL connection, which has a lot more bandwidth available than cable, even if they aren't capped for speed. I have had a rare 2 MB/s download rate last night, but that was like 2 AM, it fluctuates, depending on other traffic, etc..

just like a friend of mine, i tell ya, cable is the same all over the world, bad helpdesks and often offline, i have adsl, really fast and good (in a year or so, i have like 8 MBS downstream)
