Just a few notes to Xerxes' presentation of the whole balrog wings and size argument.

Just like Melkor created dragons both with and without wings so too could it be with balrogs. But in opposition to dragons being made of flesh balrogs are twisted spirits of fire and in combination with the manipulative 'living' shadow of which they consist they are probably flexible when it comes to size and shape. Like their master, Melkor, they can probably adjust their size greatly at will and their wings might be conjured by will too.

Perhaps the wings of a balrog has no practical use but to add to their terror like men of status use cloaks to embellish their position. Maybe the unique use of these wings is to envelop an opponent to fully surround her with their terrible presence.

Willpower is a very important part of Tolkien's universe. It is willpower more than anything makes the heroes of his world face up to and overcome the evil terrors brought forth by Melkor and his lieutenant Sauron. Great wings looming over its enemies would definately add to the willcrushing terror of a balrog.

As to Gandalf coming flying down the steps, to fly is an old term for fleeing as Gandalf uses himself; 'Fly! This is a foe beyond any of you. I must hold the narrow way. Fly!' and 'Fly, you fools!' - both quotes taken from the book as the fellowship encounters the balrog. Gandalf is more powerful than he lets on and maybe, just maybe, he has the power to fly if thus inclined but in this instance I think he's just fleeing.

Just my thoughts and ideas on the matters.

Sorry to say, but I've never read further than 100 pages in FOTR...

I got bored with it, simply. Whereas "The hobbit" is easy to catch on with and full of excitement from the start, LOTR is incredibly heavy and tedious to read in the beginning.

I'm the quite the heathen in my RPG group because I haven't read LOTR, but all that have read it agree that it is very heavy and boring to read throughout the saga, specifically in the start.

The hobbit is much easier to swallow and in most cases better written, at least it didn't got me unhinged in the start, considering I was 9 years old when I read it.

Did you guys know that Tolkien first invented the elven language, and *then* decided to make a world for it to be placed in...

I've read "The Hobbit" and the three "The Lord of the Rings" books. I read "The Hobbit" about 2 years ago, and read the trilogy last summer, in anticipation of the movie. I borrowed the books off my friends, but last week, I ordered the two books, and they're now here. Yes two books, not four. I got "The Hobbit" and I got the unabridged version of "The Lord of the Rings", mostly because I just wanted to get that original style, big honkin' book :D

I'm reading "The Hobbit" again now, and then will move on to "The Lord of the Rings" afterwords. I plan on picking it up at least once a year, probably a while before each movie comes out. I really love this story, and if you've seen the movies but have not read the books, I recommend you read them, for it will give you a much better understanding of the movies.

EDIT: On a side note as some others have mentioned, not only did Tolkien write the books in his spare time, and created the languages first, that's the reason why he wrote the books. He wrote "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" in order to give credit and background to his created languages. Did you know that he was an English Proffesor? Oh and another thing, ever read the bible? Guess who you have to thank for translating it...?

Yep, you guessed it. Most modern versions of the Holy book are based on translations by none other than J.R.R. Tolkien himself.
