Reasons why the JK2 community is NOT dying

Kurgan

Recommended Posts

Despite the huge numbers of people who supposedly have stopped playing because of the gameplay changes of the recent patches, there are still people:

1) Buying the game and getting into it for the first time. Many of them may be like me... if you join a game community late, you fire up the latest patch the first time you install and play the game.

2) Creating and releasing mods. Some people are claiming that because revolutionary new mods aren't released every single day that editing is dead for the game. Good mods take time to create! And besides, we hear about new ones all the time, which are cool or awesome. Plus we've got the entire Q3 editing knowledge base behind us. Editing for JK2 didn't take the huge amount of time to learn (collectively) that JK1 editing did.

3) Playing the game. Take a look at the servers, they're still up and being used. Old ones go down and old clans break up, but new ones take their place and they fill up.

4) People still frequent this site to talk about the game. And we aren't the only JK2 site in existence... think about it!

And finally,

5) This game won the admiration of tons of review sites and fans, and its only been out since last March! Good games last longer than 6 months....

There's my rant. ; )

go to http://www.teamwarfare.com and see how many teams are playing jk2. then go and look at how many teams are playing t2. it's a testament to how idiotic lucasarts and raven are. perhaps new people are coming and playing, but the overall skill level of those new people is gonna be wayyyy down. i think that lucasarts should have developed SW:G first that way the people that wanna pretend they're a jedi can do their thing and the competitive players could play jk2, which is a very unique and could have been an AWESOME game. instead the gamedevs listened to the whining 'jedis' about how this is too strong or that is too strong and how i wanna fight for 20 minutes and pretend i'm in a starwars movie blah blah. next thing you know all the saber stances will do 1 damage, the blocking rate will be 99%, guns will all do 1 damage as well, there will be no force powers except seeing and jump, and the game will be filled with people bashing each other with glowsticks or pelting each other with peashooters for an hour before anyone dies.

Aoshi, that's why we have game modifications. The game will fit the various molds the community has a demand for.

As for reasons the game is still thriving...

  • JK2 is a common benchmark for new video cards.
  • Community developement rate (net-wise) is increasing.
  • New players are still joining the community.

Where did anyone get the idea community developement has been in a slump? It isn't exactly uncommon for a game to go a day without the release of a new map, mod, skin, etc...

There invariably will be large amounts of time between new releases from developers.

Unsurprisingly most of the individuals making comments on the topic of a seemingly lack of community generated content aren't adept to gaming communities in general.

If you think the game is dieing that's just fine, when you get bored of it, just stop playing

I'm still having fun with it, planning quite a few more models too :D

There are two problems that MUST be addressed.

1) The Animation Code MUST become modifiyable

2) The SP Source Code MUST be released

#2 isn't likely which is truely sad

I never said that I play it. I posted an opinion. I'm not trying to convince someone. But it seems the majority doesn't get it and takes my messages as personal attacks. Lol.

Nevertheless, I gonna post messages if I feel for no matter if I play the game or not.

Of course the game will not die for newbies (not you Kurgan, I know you love newbies), just look at JK.

100% Correct

The game was hijacked by a bunch of "Wanna B Jedi" that were far more interested in pretending they were Jedi, then playing a quality game. They sought to lengthen matches by making things weaker instead of simply playing and getting better. Raven agreed with them and the bleeding off of the best teams, players, and Mod makers began.

The fact is that the game won't be dead for a long long time. But what it will be is far less competitive then it could have been. It will not get the best Mod makers because they tend to follow the best competition.

So the game isn't dead, but it on life support waiting for someone to pull the plug.

Peace

i found it much more intense to have the possibility of being killed with one strike of the light saber. it made you think about how to attack or attacking with a strategy in mind instead of mindless swinging.

in a duel with two reborn...the match would be over in average of 5 minutes...with either them or me winning. if that long.

You think the game is dying even though you don't play it.....

What a troll.

There is no need to put down other threads to support your opinion, some individuals feel that have been here longer than others that like the JK and mots it will slowly die, however the main arguement is that JO will die quicker than the previous.

Thus those original fans reflect on what prolonged life to JK or MOts, Tc's, mods, great levels, and creative storytelling altogether, thats all people are saying, and again these people aren't just guys that popped up in the forum over night, but have been here a while, now patience for most is the key.

JK2 isn't really dead, its just sooo many idiots play becasue star wars appeals to the younger audience. There are a small majority that play for fun and these people are great, but the majority take this game as aquake MOD and play merely for kills.

Jk2 will however not live that long if various other source codes aren't released.

Models can only be SO good without new animations . . .

Bah, "skilled community" or not, "#1 selling game in the world" or not, "revolutionary new mods" or not, the fact is, the community IS STILL GOING STRONG (in terms of sales and playing) and if the game is truly dying or dead, why are you all still here?

That's what I don't get. If the game is dead and people have "moved on" why waste time here instead of flocking to all those other great games that are so much better than JK2 and all those communities that are so superior? ; )

Obviously, something is keeping them here, and the JK2.net community is just the tiny tip of the iceberg that makes up the whole JK2 community. Heck, I've never even BEEN to the zone since I got the game. But who knows how many have...

PS: I've said it before, but if you want raw numbers for successful games, try looking at Battlenet or any MMORPG that's been out for awhile. Dwarfs any FPS community, but that doesn't mean that other games aren't successful.

Of course the game will not die for newbies (not you Kurgan, I know you love newbies), just look at JK.

Something of an ambigious statement. I love newbies? ; )

Maybe I don't feel the need to bash them constantly to improve my self image (like some unfortunate souls)?

I'm assuming you are referring to the natural process wherein people stop playing a game (for an infinite number of reasons: boredom, responsibilities at home or work, computer problems, too hard for them, internet problems, etc.) and new people buy the game and join the community to replace them. Some people act as if only 10,000 people buy any game and then when those people put it away, the community just disapears. I'm trying to get such people to see the bigger picture.

Look at JK, many of us in the JK2 community were JK veterans. Some of us were so hardcore, we played JK1 for years (myself included, and I'm talking MotS here too). We were all newbies when we first got the games, but after playing for a few years, you could hardly refer to anyone as a "newbie" unless you're just being a troll.

I think anyone who buys a game has a right to be a part of that game's community if they wish to. Although I have my doubts about so-called cheaters.... but that's another rant for another time. ; )

I think my above statements speak for themselves.

I want to beleive that the JK2 Community is not dieing but I have saw a big, big, big increase in servers. And when I say, "big, big big" (big 3 times), I mean big.

There used to be about 850 servers visable on ASE and with atleast 10 with a low ping, with 20 people in them, and with atleast 3-5 open slots. Usually with some servers allowing up to 32 players. Now most of the servers that are full have a high ping and only allow 16 players or so.

The biggest server loss was the "Always Online CTF" server. That was one of the if not the best CTF JK2 servers that ever existed. I'm hoping within the next few months we get a dramatic increase of new members and see an increase of servers that allow more than 12 people to be in the server.

As I have been for the last few months I'm going to stick with JK2 trying to play it atleast once a day every day trying to keep it alive. I've only had the game since July 9th, but I've noticed even since then there has been a dramatic decrease in gameplay and servers. I'm hoping this all changes in the near future.

Eh.. I'm expected an expansion pack, like someone said... Why would Raven and LucasArts hold back the SP and animation source codes.. it'd only piss their customers off... they wouldn't loose money on JKII, but they'd loose money on future games. I have a feeling that an expansion pack would breathe some life back into this game, although, I don't think it's lost much.. I mean, I'm a member at the Jedi Academy

( http://academy.jediknightii.net ) * alittle plug-a-roo :naughty: *

And in the last 3 or so weeks.. I've seen more new members then I have seen over the last 2 months. I think this game is far from dead, but it has the potential to die pretty fast if things continue going in the direction they're going (ie; whiners, spammers, people who say the game is dead...) But I see a expansion pack in the future, which will give a whole new spin on the game

Take CivIII for example.. I play that game, I love it, it's awsome, I should play it more often

I heared about the Play the World expansion and I almost soiled myself. I had said since I got the game, that the thing that would make it the *PERFECT* TBS is a MP part to it... I mean, the whole idea of diplomacy is taken to a whole new level with the MP expansion pack... and it will even turn the game into a RTS, if you so choose

I thnk an expansion for JKII, if done correctly, can make this game seems like a completely different game, it can't be something that just adds a few more levels, it needs to add a new concept to the game
