Gotta wonder the mentality...

Just wanna address a recurring incident I keep experiencing. Just for the record I play Duel - saber only - no force.

It happens when I play against an overly evasive opponent (and there are alot  ). Quite soon into the fight I tire from chasing them around so I simply just stop up waiting for them to come to me, and the following is what happens 9 out of 10 times: They don't come to me; they just pace from side to side in a safe distance waiting for me to come attacking. After about 5 secs of that I turn off my saber and just stand still, and still they'll just continue to pace back and forth, some turning their own saber off. Now, notice I do not have the chat box up as an indication of me writing, messing around with Options or being AFK.

So, I just keep waiting. And after half a minute or so they'll ask 'Something wrong?' or something to that effect. I answer 'No.', but still they won't attack. Then they'll ask 'Why don't you play?' to which I answer 'I am playing.' And then, maybe, some will finally start taking some aggresive initiative and attack. Yesterday I got even further with some guy that was none too good at english. Told him 'You're free to attack me at your leisure.' He didn't, so I took it that he didn't understand. So I said it again in what I thought more understandable words 'Feel free to attack as you wish.' He then said what I think meant I should just play with myself and logged off. This was me:

My question with this is: What is the mentality behind it all? Why does it seem inconceivable to so many to just attack me when I get bored of chasing around their overevasive butts? Must I always be the one to take initiative?

I......just....don't....get it!

I don't get it either my friend. There is nothing more annoying than someone who is continuously on the run. I'm like you, I refuse to keep chasing and just stand there. We are there to fight ffs, not play cat and mouse! I usually end up warning them with the timewaster rule and if they keep doing it, I just kick them.

Then by all means, take the spider to the fly, so to speak. If they continue to dance and pace then strike at them quickly and then retreat. But be ready immediately as you do so you can counter their advance. If they don't come after you, then keep "jabbing" at them.

Some people are better defensive fighters than being adept at taking the offense to the opponent. This is applicable in debate, boxing, racing, etc. I fancy myself more of "defense" fighter as well. But the element of surprise is on your side, so use it to your advantage! :)

Defensive fighters I have no problem with; it's the overly evasive ones...you know, the ones that will make one strike then move out to a distance of twice the reach of DFA, then you attack again and they repeatedly evade you to a totally unnecessary distance. The type I really hate is the red swing evader....god, they're boring! The only thing more boring than the red swing evader are 2 of them duking it out *YAWN*.

Heh. Actually, one of the best games I had online with JK2 was a game of cat and mouse. I was on a server with this all-round fighter, who used anything at his disposal to take out his opponents (not just the saber). There were a couple of others on the server too...but they kept coming and going, while we two stayed on. Anyway, sort of by mutual understanding, we started running around, laying traps with mines, sniping...and had a few private saber duels. We were pretty evenly matched, and it was probably the best 2 hours I've spent online. :)

Of course...that was before the dark times...before the patches. ;):D

I just can't play online very well at all with the 1.04 patch, because my lag's bad, and it was bad enough before to have a decent duel - but with all the extra blocking, it's near impossible. :(

Anyway...I'm not the kind to stand around, so I guess cat and mouse isn't an issue for me, but I can understand if it's annoying to some. :)

Yes, this is the scary truth nowadays.

If they're good, they won't hesitate and just start lunging you if you keep standing there - if all they do is stick to red stance, they unfortunately very often fall back on this tactic.

The trick is, red stancers rely on you on making the first move if they know that you're good with yellow/blue and can punish them the splitsecond they open up a would-be can of red death.

Never tried turning my saber off though - I've always been brutally reminded that it's a bad idea. I've seen many a fool running around with his saber turned off, thinking he can keep his distance ....

If an opponent chooses to ouright run from me, then it's his own damn responsibility to actually fight and get the queue moving - not mine. If he's the "stepdancer" kind of fighter, and overly dodging, I'll simply stop for a while and see if he can fight as well.

I always expect poeple on the pubs to be complete arses - clanners are more or less that way too. It's not a fact, it's just what I've been growing accustomed to. I've left many servers simply because I couldn't fight the people on it, without either me or them turning angry by it.

uhhm, back in the old days (jkI) it was saber off=peace, i sortof of adapted it to JKII, and with me alot of other people. so, when a guys has his saber off in a battle, i think it means peace

It generally does, Kstar, yes.

However, it's easy to say if the opposition is merely turning his saber off to make him appear arrogant and... *WHACK* - there went his head.

Same as with walking and doing that funky riverdance - do they honestly think they can psyche me with that crap?

Heh - gotta love the red junkies that do 1/2/3 hits depending on their favourite combo, and then immediately after that roll/jump away....

Makes for an interesting fight none the less - gives new meaning to the idea of a "marathon gaming session".... :D
