These advertisements take the piss.

I understand that you may need the money or hosting or whatever else they earn you, but I seriously do think that you should reconsider letting some of the advertisements which you run onto the network.

I open the forums to check the posts, only to be greeted with a huge popup telling me about safari's or something of the sort. Okay, no problem, I just closed it. Then I come across a flash side banner which almost caused my computer to freeze (it dislikes Flash) - even better.

Then, as if I wasn't finding the experience of these forums frustrating enough, I'm prompted randomly to install a piece of software from the gator corporation, and it wasn't just a popup, it was a proper installation dialogue.

Now this really is going too far. I can (just) stand having two or three popups slapping me in the face everytime I visit and a huge long side banner and overhead banner to boot, but when I'm having to also take the time to close installation prompts (just in case it's one of my important notifications which appear sometimes) it's just hell visiting.

Yes, I'm just one person out of an insane amount of people, but please watch what you allow on here because these advertisements are now making what used to be where I'd spend hours a week visiting (escapemi and gfnetwork) a place I barely touch once a week.

I'm also tired, ill and in the perfect mood to whine, so that can take some credit for this mean post. :D

I browse with Mozilla nowadays. It has a pop-up killer :D

But I agree ... Nobody likes the ads, and I hate the UGO network.

But the admins pay this from their own pocket. (That is all the server costs, and not only this site, but all LG sites I believe. and they pay for the forum software).

Maybe you could supply them an alternative ;)

I already stated my awareness of the money/etc the banners provide, but the companies which provide these banners are getting way too adventurous by having huge flash banners which lag slower systems and (almost) forced installation of software.

Next they'll be using Internet Explorer exploits to force us to download their software. :)

I don't mind ads, it's just when they hinder my use of the forums that I get annoyed and eventually stop visiting. Yes, I may be just one insignificant person bitching, but I'm sure others have slowly stopped visiting because of this. Hell, an ezBoard has less ads than these things, and that's why the GF forums moved away from them if I remember correctly. :D

But still, despite the killer ads, I will say that these forums are a good place to visit and maybe if I can get some of this ad-killing software you mention I can bring myself to open up it's lag infested pages more often. I dislike using browsers other than my beloved IE though.. know any non browser-specific ad killers? :p

You should only be seing ONE pop per session.. meaning you might get one when you first join, and then you should be able to browse and post your heart away without ANY pops showing.

You're right, with the ad market in the toilet, we DO need to toss up one pop per session to keep the sites running on the best equipment and keep providing new exciting services and sites.

We hope to eliminate them altogether, however, in the near future.

In the meantime, thanks for everyone's continued loyalty and patience.

WOW

That will really be something to see... Or not see, in the case of the ads :D ...I hope it happens... I'm still amazed at the dedication the staff have for these fourms - it's seriously impressive what you guys do for this place :)

@Thrik - check your PMs :)

Aye, thanks Wacky! :D

And Aristotle, good to hear.. it's not really the popups which bother me so much, it's the whole intrusive aspect some of them have, such (as I mentioned earlier) as prompting me to install random software.

As a side note, that 1 per session thing must be broken because I've received on a few occasions 2 or 3 popups all at the same time. But anyway, I won't complain anymore as Wacky has supplied me with what seems like some useful software. :D
