Do the Star Wars hold up to scrutiny?

Personally I find that there are several problems with the SW universe (I'm only talking about the original movies here).

Note that I am entirely aware that this is where the suspense of disbelif enters the picture, but I still find the following highly amusing questions to ponder:

Where is the armour? Why are there no tanks (sure, there are walkers, but they don't hold up for several different reasons)?

Where is the barrage fire? In, for example, the Hoth theatre, if the Empire can deploy ATATs then why can't they deploy mobile long-range missile launchers and nuke the base flat?

Where is the starfleet? You never see any starships directly supporting a planetside assault.

Why do they worry about going to above-light velocity in an asteroid field? If the ships are at all effected by the material space when in hyperspace, then they should by all rights have been ripped to shreds by the interstellar dust/comet tales.

I'm sure that there are a lot of other things, but right now I am far too tired to think of more...

i can answer thr first one - 'cause vader wanted luke alive - he wouldn't be much good as a puddle of toxic waste

the second one - well i think what Han meant was he didn't want to come out of hyberspace into an asteroid field - if they came into real-space right in front of a big asteroid they would... well BANG!!!

Point, but then again the Empire could at least use Scud-style missiles to take out the shield generator and then Deep Strike the base with Stormtroopers, from the big, fat Star Destroyer in orbit...

i said it before and ill say it again. ITS JUST A MOVIE! ENJOY IT FOR WHAT IT IS

Told you, did I not, that this is merely a mind-game, not an analyzation of the movies (which I BTW consider rather good). If we just took the films on face value, though, this thread would be rather moot...

Im not sure of the right way these ships are supposed to travel. But from what i have read in the novels, when they plot in Hyperspace travel.

It is in Certain Routes. These routes are held by markers, beacons littering the entire universe.

The Navicomputer then plots the safest route to and from these points, because they DONT have comets asteroids and such things littering them.

this is the reason why they cant travel too fast in asteroid belts. A parsec is the distance between two points, IE Tatooine and hoth might be 55million parsecs away.

But i will find out more info for u..

Perhaps since you are required to travel in a straight line to get teh correct trajectory for hyperspace, there isnt enought room to get it correct in an asteriod feild. :D Also, perhaps their anti-missile laser defense systems are so advanced taht hardpoints dont have that much affect... :D

Maybe you should pay more attention to the movies...

Tanks in Ep. 1.

Where is the barrage fire? In, for example, the Hoth theatre, if the Empire can deploy ATATs then why can't they deploy mobile long-range missile launchers and nuke the base flat?

Because of the HUGE SHIELD defending the base from space attacks. Thats why AT-ATs were deployed, to nuke the shield generator.

Where is the starfleet? You never see any starships directly supporting a planetside assault.

The Battle of Hoth was exactly that.

Why do they worry about going to above-light velocity in an asteroid field? If the ships are at all effected by the material space when in hyperspace, then they should by all rights have been ripped to shreds by the interstellar dust/comet tales.

Thats why they have navicomputers.

All these explanations are in the movie, explained outright, no speculation needed. Besides, it is a movie.

I agree with that. I mean it's all fiction......made up inside GL's head, it doesn't exist. As much as we all would like it to.....it just doesn't.
