{BK}SupremePain
im not sure but i heard that the LOTR team had a program (animating program) made for there movies so they could create such realistic movement of the gollum "on" Andy

{BK}SupremePain
yeah but that can be done in other programs too:D im saying that they had a whole new program made, cuase that technoligy with those dots (the things they pick they pic up some kind of a signal with) they use, have been used before

Matt-Liell
I've seen it a couple times before, Andy did a great job! As they said in the video he devoted body, mind and soul to the part! "They stole it from us! Those sneaky little Hobbitses!" "You're a liar and a thief! MURDER!" Gollum/Smeagol was a great addition to TTT!
BCanr2d2
The things with the dots on the body, it's called Motion Capture. Uses infra-red light to reflect off these "dots" on the body, so that the different parts of the body that moved can be captured in a PC. Used for nearly all sports games to achieve realistic movement by the athletes. Not delving too deep into what WETA Digital had to do, but they did develop some of their own animation software for the LOTR movies, so they weren't hamstrung by the limitations of other systems. The "special" software that you are referring to, is probably to help merge the footage without Andy in it, and the adjusted footage that have Andy's body covered by the Gollum animation. It is a very time consuming thing I would assume, very processor intensive stuff to do 3D graphical renders. Once this is done, the normal digital animation software used by WETA for the rest of the movie was used.
DARK DAN
if you get the DVD of LOTR then you can see how they made gollum and also how they made the battle sence in TTT is great to see the problems they had as the system was to advance for them
BCanr2d2
Are you talking about the War AI software, that is used in both Helm's Deep and in The Last Allliance Of Elves and Men in the Prologue? That they had to tweak the software since the Uruk-Hai would run off at the end, they got too scared at the end of the Battle for Helm's Deep.
