So, what is the best single player RPG? I'm thinking about getting NWN - it looks good....what do you think?

NWN IS AWFUL TRUST ME. If you have a PS2 get Suikoden 1 and 2 (their actually ps1 games, but they play on 2) beat them, then play Suikoden 3. Those are the best RPGs EVER, that is...if your all about the story and plotline. You probably wont find those games in a store anywhere...the best place to buy them is eBay because the games were not publisized at all.

Final Fantasy is great too, some are better than others ill give ya a quick run down starting with the playstaion ones cause i assume you wont wana play the SNES ones (which are better IMO)

FFVII - a legend, you must play this no questions asked.

FFVIII - Very good FF game, I think its the most serious FF game, VERY GOOD ENDING. This game is better if youve played the SNES final fantasies though.

FFIX - dunno I didnt get that far into it, the story didnt pull me in.

FFX - Awesome game, awesome graphics, very fun and exciting however, you feel like you are being led around the entire time, what i mean is...you dont have a lot of freedom as to what you will do next.

i havet played FFXI yet, but its online. blah.

i suggest when playing the FF series DO NOT use strategy guides or whatnot cause simply its more fun when you gotta figure out where things are and so on by yourself. You can go back and try to do everything possible in the game, that is fun as well...but for the first time you play them...concentrate on the storyline.

If you want a great sp RPG, try Morrowind. The combat is a bit too simple, but except from that, it's about perfect. You can do nearly whatever you want, and it is totally open ended. A lot of different skills, all from alchemy to armoring, from Axe skill to sneaking skill, and there's a lot of neat magic (not only magic that will damage your enemy, you can do nearly whatever you want with magic. Conjure a sword, summon a Golden Saint, mix up a potion, teleport, telegrab, make yourself invisible, open locks, walk on water, etc.). I especially like stealing, tha's really fun.

BTW, don't listen to the others about FF, even though they are great games, they are not RPGs.

you are very wrong, an RPG does NOT mean it has to follow something similar to the D&D rules. An rpg means you take up the role of a character(s) im disgusted by that statement you said.

and btw, if you guys wana play some real rpgs...get out the D&D books a few friends and start writin down...

NOT THIS TOPIC AGAIN........

FFVII - it may now look dated and the music may not be what people want, but if a single RPG is what you want, it is the only option.

The only game to come close to the depth, comic moments, twists and excellent game system is Legend of Dragoon, which I also strongly recommend.

FFVII has the plot, characters, comedy just randomly thrown in during serious sequences that add a nice touch, mini-quests to die for, a game system which has the quick simple use way and the depp masterful strategy way.

Extra battles (the Weapons).

A bad guy that you meet from the off, and learn about, and sympathise with. he is not just introduced at the end, or ignored for a bigger baddie at the end like FFs VII & IX, but right to the end, you chase him.

It plays with your mind, perspective and emotions (one character wil have you gunning for the bad guy like nothing from one point on)

The musis, whilst midi on the whole, is excellently written - and used to good effect. The pivotal event mentioned above is followed by a battle, where the music is replaced with non-batle music. The effect was HUGE!

So many random things thrown in that give moments of perspective.

It did not need fancy graphics, horrible controls, highly logical mind.

It was serious, and yet did not take itself too serious.

Replay value is huge! - Dude - I am playing it for the FOURTH time round because there is still stuff I have yet to do and see!

GET IT!!!!! You won't regret it. Give it time, get into it, and it will be some of the best £15 you'll ever spend.

Legend of Dragoon is a gem also. raphics and music are similar, butnot vastly. The cutscenes are much better. But it kept the plot and characters as the focus, having an event similar to FFVII, which only adds to it's charm.

Its unique battle system - the Dragoons.... BEAUTIFUL! I had transform on always!

Again - £15/£20 you'll not regret.

He's true - FFs are RPGs too.

RPG is a role playing game - you are playing a role.

Hell - technically, ALL games are RPG, so lets now go this route!

Basically, FF is thought to be the lighter, easier to get into end of the RPG scale, and thats fitting.

Not that I am knocking NWN, hope to have a PC capable of playing it myself one day, but it is the more matrue end of the scale.

Thats all it is.

Is Monkey Island an RPG? No.

An RPG is a game where you get to denvelop your character in wichever way you want. You play a role, but that role must be your own, not a role that the game has decided that you have. To say it this way: If you would be able to chop Zell's head off in the middle of FFVIII, then it would be RPG.

not every single RPG can be perfect according to your personal standards JM Qui-Gon Jinn. The characters in FF series DO develop as the game goes along. I think the Suikoden series are some of the best RPGs, there is so much freedom in those games compared to the FF series. And if your gona play Suikoden, there IS a PS2 one called SUikoden 3 but do NOT play it unless youve already played 1 and 2, trust me.

Ok. excuse me if I'm being too blunt but I'm drunk so...

FF's are not RPG's. The sole fact that you're playing "a character" does not mean that it is a RPG.

Try playing Doom >> playing the l337 guy who's killing all things that are moving is ROLEPLAYING, yes?

My favourite is the BG-series. It's not perfect but it's very, very good. If you want to play a pretty adventure game go with the FF's, but...really, people - those games have NOTHING to do with RPG's.

And NO - Diablo is not an RPG either! :swear:

Omni Slash or Leonheart.... Sorry, but Leon hart was against a no-idea-where-you-came-from baddy, and you were not necessarily ever gonna see it.

Omnislash however you ARE gonna see - guarantee. If you get round to completing FFVII, you WILL see it - and it is usd in an excellent way!

Without a doubt, Morrowind. Though I'm a fan of the Final Fantasy games, IMHO they aren't REAL RPG games. IMO, they lack enough sidequests and custom settings to really be a full RPG. Morrowind, on the other hand, lets you be about anything. You can make your own custom class, and the endless slew of plugins out there, which can be made with ease with the included construction set, makes sure that there's always something new to do.

Final Fantasy games, IMO, are really more like interactive movies, in which the user is given some choices here and there at what non-essential scenes can be included.
