Mods Are the Death of Games

I, for one, am sick of trying to join MP games (Not just JK2, but this being said after just playing JK2) and not being able to.

I hope to god that game devs will never release anything resembling source code again. Ever.

I know you all deal with it. So do I. And the fact is, I don't WANT to download fifty million fragments of Jedi Mod. Why? Well:

1.) The game seems to limit server download speeds to about 10kbps. When I try to download a 25mb file... It makes want to scream.

2.) Jedi Mod (and the equivalents) are a jokes of a mod. They might as well have just enabled MP cheats and left it at that.

3.) It's left lightly dusted all across my JK2 folder

Even with JK2, with only partial source released, I can barely get onto a server now, and this has been true for as long as I can remember. I'm sick of learning the mechanics of a game, just so they can all be thrown out of proportion on some stupid modded server.

What good is a game to me if I can't ever play it? Poorly done/multitudes of mods ruin a community.

It was the same with UT. I couldn't join a server without having to play with modified sniper rifles. Yeah, what a brilliant idea that was. Take a weapon that's a two hit kill, and make it fire one hundred rounds in about four seconds. Then let's lower the gravity so that if you jump, you're an even easier target than you were on the ground. It made me sick to my stomach.

Granted, there are some good looking and great mods out there, but it's just not worth it. I'd rather have no mods than no game.

*flames shoot out of nose*

I agree that some mods are crap , but you do know that the jedi mod doesn't have to be downloaded when you want to play online you can download it from any of the sites and it's a good mod the last time i used it you know Two Sabers never experienced in a jedi game (to my knowledge) untill lucasarts annouced JA.

Anyway i would personally say that mods are not the death but sometimes make a game a million time more enjoyable, and to sort out the mods floating around why don't you just rename them so you can remember what is what, ilike mods, use them and enjoy them and probarly 90% do as well and yes i agree with you that some very much suck but thats mainly the sort of newbie mods that are getting used to modding.

In the gta3 community theres a mod called multi theft auto which obviously allows multi player in gta3 on servers and when it was first released it had a load of bugs but now it the latest version has fixed that and this mod has quickly became one of the most popular for gta3 and i suppose their gonna make it conpatable for vice city, so at the end of this complete mumbo jumbo my personal opinion is mods rock :D

Mods really ruined the game. Why are 90% of the servers empty? Because someone out there thought it woudl be c00l ub3r l337 to make a mod that gives jedis the ability to wash the dishes while they hack away, then set the server where no one is allowed to download it.

Then the admins who DO allow downloads, the files download .000000000000000000000001 k per second.

Then the mods decide it's best to install forced custom models and skins, so after you're finished downloading the mod crap, then you get to download the models as well at .000000000000000000000001 k per second.

Then after that, they decide to put all custom maps on the servers, so you have to download them at .000000000000000000000001 k per second.

Then after that, you join, and the entire server is all bots....and the server is Jedi Knight skill difficulty, and it resets all of your config settings.

The death of games? Mods are the birth of a new games industry. They put the power to make a game in the hands of anyone who wants to and they don't have to fit into budgets or deadlines. For me, some of the greatest games I ever played were mods (Counter Strike beta 2, Day of Defeat, Weapons factory for Quake 2). The fact that guys like Johnny C. ride around in Lamborghinis is a testament to the fact that games should not be a business, they should be an art form. Fact: Electronic gaming is the most profitable entertainment industry in the world. And what has come of it? Daikatana, that's what. Mods are the first step in the evolution of games; up from the arcade and into legitamacy as a creative outlet.

My point is that any mod is a good mod, even if it's a bad mod, bacuse it shows that someone out there is doing their own thing.

But you're right. Most of the JKII mods out there do more against the game than for it. The models and maps and so on are good though.

er.....okay.

Yes, people can say "OOO I want my uber jedi to have an uber saber hilt and everyone else to see it" and force people to download a 30 meg saber hilt, no duh jk2 died. All the servers are nearly empty, and most of those empty ones are mods.

Dont make a mod unless you can make a good one. It just trashes up jk2 otherwise. (unless it's for personal things like for your clan)

Ok, I have to admit, it was fun to do the wrist flick, and have an easy dual saber mod, me being a maul fanatic and everything. But the damned Jedi Mod changed like every 20 days, it was getting to be a real headache, trying to keep up with it. And then every damn mod, you would gain and loose things. Like with Omnimod, where the hell is my Darth Maul saber hilt?!

I have given up on the servers, I would rather just play with a few people I know, that way it is easier to set up the maps. I was never any good anyways.

Without mods, we would not have Capture the Flag, Counterstrike, TeamFortress and other classics out there that changed the way a game was played.....

Bad mods are those that are forever changing, that people have to download updates every 2 or 3 weeks to keep playing on the servers. Don't try to use the ingame download...

Try and use something like AllSeeingEye to filter out the games that you don't have the mod for, makes it a lot easier.

Actually, most mods breath new life into games.

In my opinion

Yes I would have to agree with neko, although they can be a pain in the butt, they can also expand the game in ways that cheats cant. I simply think that they are windows of expantion:D

If we didn't have mods, the sequel that we all expect would have to come out sooner. It would be rushed, and so be unworthy of us.

Instead, we have loving Mod communities who give the big names time to work on a crafted masterpiece.

The best example of all is ofcourse Sierra and Half Life. Thanks to the booming mod life, they have had YEARS (nigh on a decade now isnt?) to work on Half Life 2.

It might seem that long, but it's actually only 5 years since HL was released - a year after Jedi Knight. ;)

As for Mods...some are good, some are bad. I agree that it can get annoying when you join a server and have to download a Mod to play. I usually just go in search of another server.

I do think the good Mods are beneficial, and can keep a game fresh and interesting for a while longer than it's usual shelf life. If nothing else you can gauge the popularity of a game by the number of Mods people are willing to make for it... *shrugs*

The problem is not the mods.

It's everyone's complete and utter lack of taste in mods.

Omni/jedi/dualsaber-mod is not cool. Who came up with the bright idea of allowing double sabers and worthless sh*t like that? It's disgusting they can't think of anything better.

Yet it's even more disgusting people download crap like this. Folks, rub your two neurons together before hitting the download button. It's not that hard to see from a glance which mod is promising, and which mod is just plain horsesh*t cooked on bad unimagination and boiled in urine.
