txa1265
Incredible opening sequence - check it out here or go to http://www.bluesnews.com for other mirrors. Just plain incredible ... my 3rd most wanted game of the year (after Jedi Academy and nearly tied with KOTOR) Wow. Mike
KBell
Deus Ex was my second favorite game next to Fallout 2 and i have been waiting for this game for nearly four years. The second it hits Best Buy's shelf and and DEFINETLY gonna snag it. I hope it pushes my PC to its absolute Max Although i dont much care for the interface even though i heard it was easy to manage. StormHammer
Thanks for the heads-up, Mike. I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor. They've definitely made the right decisions regarding the cut scenes this time around, because that's a great opener for the game. DX2 is actually top of my list in the anticipation stakes, and I hope the 'improvements' they've made to the UI (and pretty much ditching the 'skills' development in favour of more Bio-Mods) is not going to have too much impact on the gameplay. The original game is one of my all-time favourites, and I've no doubt DX2 will be up there alongside it. Hopefully we won't have to wait much longer before we can play it. leXX
Wow, that was amazing! I remember playing the demo of Deus Ex a couple of years ago, and liking it. I just never got round to buying the full game. I think I'll pick up a copy and play it before this one comes out. I'll be keeping a close eye on this from now on. txa1265
Yeah, DX is one of my all time faves - and I only played it this year for the first time! Missed it when it first came out. The CGI in that intro was simply amazing - really nice. And the plot introduction was also quite compelling ... you really want more. It's funny - Jedi Academy is my 'most wanted', and HL2 has taken tons of mind-share just about everywhere, including me (even if the first didn't knock my socks off), and KOTOR has me really intrigued so I've been following the press on that, and I've been keeping an eye on lots of other games (Halo, Breed, XIII, etc) ... DX2 has kind of been pushed to the back of my brain. This trailer sent it to the front and made me remember why I liked the original so much. I know they are getting rid of many of the complexities, but I hope there is still compelling development as you progress. Mike

For anyone who's never played it, it can seem quite long the first time through it - I know it took me a good few days of solid gameplay to get through it. It's definitely worthwhile completing it, though, so stick with it. DX had some of the best (and complex) level design I've seen in any game (apart from the Thief games, on which some of Ion Storm's team originally worked, under the Looking Glass name). Deep and compelling story...RPG elements...great level design...it's just a great game. I expect DX2 to be a worthy sequel.

It sure seems that Deus Ex 2 is well on its' way. I've said it a bunch of times, but there's a great fall / winter coming for games ... I'm concerned about some of the comments of things they've done due to comments of the game being too hard, confusing and long ... those were some of the things I liked best However, other comments about the story, the streamlining of augmentations, and ... well, that video, make me feel much better that this game is going to look AND play very nicely! Mike And StormHammer ... I'd love to help you with the connection, but then you'd be 56k-ing from my home DSL or work T3 rather than someone else's ... the Thief video looks very nice. I got Thief 1 as a gift years ago and liked it, but never played #2.

Deus Ex's universe is dark and dreery, which in my mind, makes a great game Unfortunately...from everything I've seen and read about DX2, it will be shorter than the first one. Apparently, from feedback they received, they believe many people failed to complete the original game due to it's considerable length - and so they will be 'fixing' that in DX2. I can understand them wanting people to finish their game, but in my view that can partly be addressed by giving the player a 'helping hand' if they seem to be stuck in one spot, either by adjusting the AI to make things a little easier, or having more readily identifiable pathways and compass bearings to the next objective. Adjusting the gameplay mechanic to remove some of the 'bottlenecks' (like not devising devilishly difficult puzzles, or adjusting Boss AI so the player doesn't spend 2 hours trying to get past them) can go a long way to keeping the gameflow going. Of course, the other factor is keeping the story and encounters interesting. If a game starts to just recycle stuff, and throw 30 enemies at you for the hell of it, then by all means streamline it. Some games do just seem to have 'filler' in them, which has no bearing on the story. If a developer feels they have to insert a few dubious levels as 'filler' then there is something fundamentally wrong in terms of the over-arching story and design. It has to be said, there were a couple of levels in Deus Ex that felt a bit like that, where the 'story' slowed to a crawl (don't ask me for specifics, I just remember some slow spots, and I haven't played it in a while). As long as there is a minimum of 20 hours gameplay, I'll be satisfied. Mike...you really should pick up Thief 2, you know. It's just as good as the first one (with some nice tie-ins to it, and a couple of nice scripted events) and almost as long (it took me 23 hours recorded mission time [it actually took me at least 10 hours longer due to mission failures] to complete Thief, and about 20.5 hours to complete Thief 2). If Thief 3 (apparently known simply as Thief) can deliver that kind of length, I'll be happy with that too.

Emon
It was my understanding the Deus Ex: Invisible War is shorter, but far less linear, so you can play it over and over several times, and have it be quite different. Warren Spector is not one to change the length of the game because some lazy Quake player didn't want to complete it. The idea was that it's shorter but far less linear, because long with the same non-linearity would be insane for the developers. So in the end, it's supposed to get you at least as many, probably a lot more gameplay hours.

So in the end, it's supposed to get you at least as many, probably a lot more gameplay hours. A very good point - which takes me back to the level design and game mechanics of Thief. Some of the levels in Thief were quite large, and others not so large - but due to the fact the buildings were designed properly, with multiple pathways, you could spend longer exploring them in detail - especially when you had to complete a number of objectives, including finding X amount of loot. You are forced to explore more, sneak past guards (so you're moving slower) and stand in shadows to plan your next move. Some of Thief's levels took me more than 2 hours to complete. As we know, the levels in Deus Ex were structured in the same way, but the gameplay mechanic did not really require you to explore every nook and cranny. If there are a number of objectives to be completed in DX2 (and we already know there can be an even greater emphasis on stealth, because they have introduced a 'shadow meter' like Thief), then I can imagine spending more time trying to remain undetected and revisiting areas of the same map to complete an objective. So I agree that tighter levels with more objectives requiring greater exploration, could lead to a long gaming experience. The stuff I mentioned in my other post above, though, I seem to recall being mentioned in an interview/article or something.

My concern is that in an effort to sell more games - I don't remember that Deus Ex was a real top-seller (better than NOLF, but certainly not in the JK range) - they may make some compromises that would disappoint hardcore players/fans like us. What I am hoping is what you said - they will make compromises, but in a way that attempts to broaden appeal without losing fans. Mike

I recall the same thing, and specifically an interview ... though I have no idea where ... There really was a concern about the feedback of so many people not finishing the game because it was too hard. I guess that's what separates casual from hardcore gamers - I only don't finish a game if there's a technical reason (bugs) or I get bored (Unreal II). Deus Ex didn't feel too long to me, and I thought I did a fair amount of exploring. The hardest part for me was the first level - learning that I shouldn't be playing this like SoFII (remember I just played it the first tim this past March). Once I got that, it wasn't too bad. Hard, yes, but fun-hard. Regardless of my concerns, I see DX:IW towering over most other games coming out this fall. Mike

After playing so many FPS games where you just run-and-gun, playing that first level stopped me dead in my tracks and I realised I actually had to think and use some strategy to get through it. Once I adapted to a different style of play, it was immensely rewarding.
