  1. This gets into "what is canon". If you're only counting what George Lucas cared about, then no it wasn't. But if a new book, video game, show, comic book, RPG or other tabletop came out, then it was understood that it existed in the same universe as the prior works of the EU. Even when George made his Prequels, fans watched these films with the understanding that earlier things like Exar Kun had come before, and later things like Thrawn and the Yuuzhan Vong came later. If you were at a trivia night and the question was, "Who was Luke Skywalker's wife?" the answer was Mara Jade. "Who was the first person shown to use a double-bladed lightsaber?" well not Darth Maul, but Exar Kun... I first learned about Exar Kun specifically from reading on Darth Maul. If you were making an article about Boba Fett's life, you didn't say he died in the Sarlaac Pit with a decisive burp. When Grey's Anatomy wanted to depict a character who was a huge Star Wars fan, she knew that Han and Leia's children were the twins Jaina and Jacen. The problem is: this mindframe is the one that creates The Rise of Skywalker. "We don't need to please the small minority of nerds. To most people, Star Wars is just pew pew kaboom adventure!"
  2. But it's beautiful when they link it, and link it well. The Star Wars Holiday Special is a longtime joke for us all, but how brave were the later sources that came later with depictions of Chewbacca's same family members, and also Life Day itself? It was exciting to read a new detailed article about something in Star Wars and to find an oblique reference to a pint-sized lagomorph (definitely Max), because Max was an Easter egg character in Jedi Knight. I understand the argument that canon is "a rod for the back of people working", but does this mean when EMI came out you had no misgivings about Herman Toothrot being H.T. Marley? Even if we accept works when they ignore continuity, there is a pleasant note that gets hit when continuity is remembered and connected with. I absolutely LOVE that, for RMI, Ron and Dave are at least attemptingcto make connections with the other games in the franchise... even if it won't hit 100%. With Marvel, I appreciate it when they mirror beats from the comic stories, even when they don't match exactly... and I appreciate it far less when Korg goes from having a mom and her boyfriend to having two dads in an all-male species - leaving my family and me to headcanon resolutions ourselves.
  3. The greatest compliments I can give George Lucas for Star Wars are: 1) Starting the universe, and 2) Allowing the EU to exist What can I say? I grew up and contributed to the era when disdain for Lucas was at an all-time high. We didn't much care what his vision for the universe was. If couldn't even get Han and Greedo right... etc. etc.
  4. The internet tells me this book was November 1995. That matches the impression I remember of this time period, sort of doing its best to incorporate as much as possible. I love the fact that they included all of this in canon, and that they referenced or modified/repaired some of these zanier characters and events in later works. To George Lucas, maybe Star Wars was always about Luke and Anakin. But to Star Wars media in the 90s and 00s, those main characters were "just kind of buried in the background" of an immense universe. EDIT: Maybe that's why I wasn't compelled by Sequel narratives that made themes of Skywalkers not being too important. It felt like those themes were answering a Star Wars that existed in George Lucas's head, as opposed to the Star Wars that had actually existed in reality for decades now. Rogue One and The Mandalorian hit those same pleasant feels, for me. I have some optimism for Andor.
  5. One thing I missed earlier... in the Monkey Monday with Murray at the Monkey head, Murray complains that people kept "dropping him in cauldrons of glop for some reason". Indicating people were using him as the Human Skull (pressed) ingredient for Monkey Island's directions. Which indicates that Guybrush himself will NOT be using Murray as an ingredient in voodoo soup to reach Monkey Island.
  6. Scabb Island Booty Island Phatt Island Dinky Island Mr. Rogers' Island Mêlée Island That's 6 islands, not counting LeChuck's Fortress or the later games' assertion that Monkey Island was the end.
  7. Oh. This quote from that interview: So that means...
  8. Since Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina has been mentioned twice now, you guys get my fansong. It used to be on the Star Wars Miniatures forums and a Warcraft lore forum, before they got shut down. Tales from the Cantina Band (I had another one with the Battle of the Grassy Plains for the Battle of New Orleans, but I forgot most of it.)
  9. Revenge is only 1 because they aren't actually islands they are all connected whoooaaaaahhhh...
  10. Well, none of what I typed is actually a spoiler. I haven't played the game. I am curious if they talk about the Idol... because we have seen it in the trailer. Elaine got it back, either from Guybrush or from the old Pirate Leaders. I wouldn't even think much of this exchange, except Grossman calls attention to the technicality. "But don't worry, I'm sure it's fine."
  11. I would like to take my joke prediction from last month, and change it into a real prediction for this month. Many of you might be guessing the same thing... Here is my joke prediction from last month: https://forums.mixnmojo.com/topic/200524-i-wonder-what-happens-in-return-to-monkey-island-%E2%80%93-wrongish-wild-and-wonderful-answers-only/?do=findComment&comment=2795068 My current prediction is:
  12. Well, everyone who pointed out that Guybrush never officially got dubbed a pirate - the three old guys remember.
  13. Guybrush's rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle is treated as a dead chicken in the demo, and referred to as a dead chicken by Guybrush when speaking on at least one occasion. Could this chicken be both rubber and dead? Was it ever rubber and alive? Was it first alive and fleshy, but then transformed into dead and rubber?
  14. Your honor, I'd like to introduce a new piece of evidence: Mike the Headless Chicken Who, unlike every chicken shown in Secret, was both headless and alive for a sustained period.
  15. Her father forbid her from dating pirates. But barbers...
  16. Nice; I'm still watching it gradually. But the picky Grackle all of you love to hate is a TAD disappointed that he highlighted the thievery trial last. We miss out on the sappy romance scene between Guybrush and Elaine - which is sort of the main indication Secret gives us that Elaine's even attracted to Guybrush. The future games' use of pet names (e.g. Plunder bunny) are callbacks to that scene, and... your Honor... I daresay they cement the canonical story variant much in the same way that Escape indicates Guybrush sank his ship, or Return suggests Guybrush spared Bob. In conclusion, the Grackle-recommended order of the Three Trials is treasure huntery, then thievery, then swordfighting, both so as to give Guybrush and Elaine this scene while also foreshadowing the quests in Revenge (treasure hunting Big Whoop), Curse (thieving the Lost Ring of Blood Island from other thieves while furthering relationship with Elaine), and Escape (insult fighting dissected and explored). This also encourages the variant of Guybrush buying a sword (at the same time he buys the shovel), then surrendering it to Fester during the thievery trial because he hasn't learned to fight with it yet, and then getting a free identical replacement underwater, which he uses to actually learn swordfighting and complete said trial... which all plays into the MI1 themes of red herrings, substitutions, and positive nihilism.
  17. Something something the map seller on Mêlée is also voiced by Danny Delk cOiNcIdEnCe hmmm????
  18. I remember 1 from Secret (fish puzzle). I remember 1 from Revenge (map puzzle). I don't remember any in Curse? I'm having trouble remembering Escape, but I feel like there were some? I remember at least 3 from Tales (Ch2 Morgan fight, Ch4 outside courthouse, Ch5 dead).
  19. The mine cart ride was pretty cool, I will say.
  20. We harassed that title, but really the oddity was Last Crusade in terms of shortness. The others tend to use "NOUN OF THE OTHER NOUN" format. (Raiders cheats because it doesn't use Indy's name at the front.) I was unkind to Crystal when it released, but I'm kinder to it now. EDIT: I maintain that TEMPLE OF DOOM IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST.
  21. Oh, I am wounded! Wounded! 🤣 This is where I was in the early 2000s, when a lot of you (I think) were here on mojo or other forums. The worlds of Timothy Zahn and LucasArts video games. I guess not all LucasArts adventure fans were necessarily LucasArts Star Wars fans. You misunderstand me. When I saw Rey speaking wookiee language, I just figured there were other wookiees on the planet she interacted with. Something like that seemed less absurd than studying an old iImperial flight simulator that included language tutorials. Just an opinion, but that's what I meant.
  22. That's how it was before, though. After Episode III, any new book etc. would try to factor in the full EU. There were contradictions, but I daresay about the sane number as we have today...
  23. Could you not still see things this way, with Episodes I-IX being the nine movies treated as unassailable films? There are a handful of books and comics that take place during this time period, including novelizations of the films themselves. My understanding is that they often contradict whatcthe films actually gave us. So can you not choose the trilogy films to supercede the books/games/comics/shows/non-trilogy films, when these contradictions happen? Example: the new expanded universe says that yhe reason Rey speaks Shyriiwook wookiee language is because she found an old Imperial ship with language tutorials on it, and she learned the language that way. I find this explanation ridiculous. If one were the type to ignore the old EU and to only pay attention to film episodes I-VI, then what is stopping one from ignoring the new EU and only paying attention to film episodes I-IX? Other example: Coca-Cola and Sprite are now canon in the Star Wars new EU. They aren't in the I-IX films. Can't we therefore choose to pretend they aren't actually in the universe?
