Gotta say....I just love this game.... It was a long time coming but finally an RPG for the SW universe, and I think BioWare pulled it off quite well, all things considered. It is also refreshing to be walking around and interacting with characters, rather than shooting at them all the time(like probably nearly all of the most recent SW games!)

It is also nice to be spending time away from the 'pathetic remnant' and 'sith wannabee' storylines we have been dealt in the JK series games..... it's actually great to be in a wholly different part of the SW/EU Universe altogether ! :D

the game just keeps you playin, I aimed to stop playing at about 11 last niht but I ended up getting off it at like 1am.

It's a great game and a very encapsulating formula - RPG, minor puzzle elements, billions of NPC to interact with, so many paths to take and the epic settings.

Its a landmark for real-time RPG's, I havent played Galaxies and probably never will because of the monthly fee I just cant pay for a game - especially paying that much just to take part in something new-ish.

I cant wait for any sequels that are planned

Unfortunately, I am addicted too. I was going to play as little as possible before Christmas so I could get my new video card and make it look nice and pretty. But now I can't stop playing and I am already a good way through (I think). And it still looks great on my old GeForce 2 card.

Crap! :)

Dude I have the game and I've been playing like 24/7  It has been a long time since I last got hooked up to a game this much. This game is together with Deus Ex and Splinter Cell the best singleplayer game ever!! It's probably the single best singleplayer game ever, but I haven't finished it yet so...

I never thought I'd like an RPG this much :)

I had concerns whether I'd like an RPG at all until I picked up NWN in August. Now I'm beginning to think that I like them better than FPS - based on my disappointment with how short games are, and the crap that is Deus Ex 2 - winner of my disappointment of the year award ... I've only really been happy with Jedi Academy this year. Well, and Elite Force 2, I suppose. The rest have been RPG's.

I'm on my 2nd time through, and playing it totally different - not just that I'm Soldier / Guardian, I'm also going dual saber, and

planet hopping much more - like when Bastila's Mother quest comes up, we go to Tatooine and deal with it, instead of waiting and losing it like the first time

There are also cool tidbits that I'm seeing that didn't happen the first time - things related to your party makeup. For instance

I was just laughing out loud at Bastila and Mission on Tatooine. Mission asks about using the force, not to hurt, but to trip someone who deserves it ... I'll not spoil all the details, but suffice it to say it is hilarious ...

Quite frankly, I cannot remember ever being this addicted to a game. The first time I got the game, I played till 4:00 in the morning and went to bed only because I saw how late it was. I got up around 10:00(which by itself is quite a feat for me on Saturday), and pretty much played through the game, only stopping once or twice for dinner till 3:00am. On Sunday, I got up around 9:30, then decided to play a 'quick' game of KOTOR around 10:00. Only when it was around 16:00 did I decide that a quick brunch-break was in order.

Honestly, in my first run-through, this game took away my entire weekend, for what it's worth. I can't wait to go on my Dark Side runthrough once vacation starts(I'd better stay away, or my collegework will suffer even more than it already has).

cool responses guys.... :D

I have become so disinterested in JA now......

I am RPGamer from wayback. My fist RPG love being Final Fantasy...... *sigh* I LOVE Final Fantasy....... NWN/BG are of course amazing too, in a very different way...

...any games that give you days/weeks/months of challenges through a storyline/adventure is always gonna be cooler than a "fight game".... IMHO

Blasphemy!

I have found that I cannot play KOTOR for a short period of time. A few times I tried playing for 20 minutes or half an hour, and ended up playing for a three hours. There are a couple reasons for this. One is that it is obviously a lot of fun and I have a hard time stopping once I start playing. The other reason is that I completely lose track of time and get so absorbed in the game world.

Definitely the sign of a great game :)

Bringing up Jedi Academy is perhaps also fine point as to what makes Knights of the Old Republic the best Star Wars game ever. Now don't think that I'll be bashing Jedi Academy, no way... but please, hear me out...

A mate of mine, whom is, as he claims, a casual Star Wars fan, had recently gotten Jedi Academy and he told me that he couldn't wait for the game to end at Korriban, because he simply got bored of it. Me, I've finished Jedi Academy about 8 times(once with all races, an extra time with Zabrak and I recently began a new game as a Rodian0... suffice to say, I really liked Jedi Academy. He just had to ask me why... for me, the answer is simple. Jedi Academy is entertainment, pure entertainment. Yes, perhaps there are some factors in there which don't make too much sense(a Padawan is sent out on dangerous mission, slices troopies left and right, and after having murdered various armies, he becomes a Jedi Knight... uh-huh), but frankly, I don't care. Jedi Academy is nothing more than entertainment. I do not care too much about the characters. Yes, they are somewhat intriguing, but when I play Jedi Academy, all I want is just to quickly slice a few Remnant troops and keep it at that.

Basically, I think that the same thing goes for all the other SW games. X-Wing Alliance is a fine game, but I pretty much play it for entertainment and blasting away TIE Fighters. Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast... all have a fine story with my favorite EU character Kyle Katarn... but still pure entertainment. For listening to a good, entertaining story set in the Star Wars universe, I'll either resort to the movies(OT & PT) and the Expanded Universe.

But Knights of the Old Republic... well, that game certainly gives you the feeling that you are one of the heroes walking in the universe, as if you're part of one of the grandest tales ever told in the vast Star Wars universe. Your character is not a Keyan Farlander or Ace Azzameen, an upcoming X-Wing pilot who flies in sidebattles. Your character is not a Kyle Katarn or Jaden Korr, an upcoming Jedi Knight who fights a lackey of Darth Vader or a warlord... no, you are the last hope on a desperate quest that will decide the fate of the Galaxy. The Republic is losing the war badly, entire planets are destroyed without any remorse from the vile, evil Sith... if your character fails in its mission, the Republic will undergo one of its most darkest hours.

That is what makes Knights of the Old Republic truly one of the best games, in my book. It's not a sidestory, it's not a quick entertainment fix... it is pure Star Wars, period.

And yes, the game is addictive. More addictive than I ever thought. Once you start down the KOTOR path, forever will it dominate the rest of your day. (it surely dominated my weekend)

Burrie:

Good points, but I at least partially disagree. I see something like SoFII as pure entertainment - I feel no moral obligation to have good actions. I just like popping heads with the OICW ;)

The JK series made me feel like a Jedi. First JK, but the big draw there was the story and scope of levels. JKII was my favorite game for a long time - at last I felt in control of *being* a Jedi. Jedi Academy took it further. And I felt responsible for my actions, making good choices, doing the right thing.

I cared about my character and other characters, much as I do in games like NWN or BG2.

But, as you say, KotOR is a different thing. I *really* care about my actions, and in particular the relationships with the others in my party. It is just a transcendant Star Wars experience ...

... if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to the game ;)

Hehe, yeah KOTOR really makes you feel you're part of the SW universe. Sometimes I feel the urge to choose dark side options in conversations. "None of your business", "I'm not interested in your stories" etc etc, but I just CANT... It'd make me feel really bad if I 'acted' that way and I think that's a big accomplishment for Bioware...

Heh I made the mistake of

pissing that guy off in the cantina..you know "1.....2....3"

Tons of fun.

I like that I can talk to people and choose what I would say. My voice is my own (somewhat out of 4 or so choices) but its better than my voice just being predetermined for me. It makes you feel as though you control more of your person's actions that way. In JA you just either sliced someone or got killed. There wasn't really too much decision making (besides choosing force, weapon) and

whether or not to slice Rosh or not

Good times.

ditto everything !

As much as I love JA, its just not the same, It is probably personal preference in that I place alot of importance on a storyline of a game, and that makes it a more enduring experience than a fragfest....

I get exactly the same feeling.

It took me 6 years to do the full 'dark side' on Jedi Knight, whereas with Jedi Knight II you didn't have the choice - so knowing that allowed me to use lots of 'dark powers' (as Kyle says, it is how you use them that makes them light or dark - I'd call gripping someone while they slowly die a dark power ...). I tried going the dark path in Jedi Academy, but feel wrong about using the powers - I care about the characters.

But, as I've said before, KotOR is a whole different thing. I care about things to a whole different level - party members, NPC's, the environment ... I care about everything I say and do, and its' impact on others.

I would play the game like 7 hours at a time. When I was sick, all I did was play KoToR. This will be my second time playing it too. And I am noticing things I missed, and I decided to go all out and do side quest for members. Now I just have to finish it sometime.... kinda lost track with new games like CoD, and recently got AvP2...

Absolutely. I'm finding that the decisions I make are based on how I (and thus my character) feel. For example, deciding on which NPCs to take with me is usually based on how I feel about them at the moment. I might not take Canderous (sp?) because I think he's being a dick, or I'll take Carth because we have been getting along lately, or Zalbaar because I want to get him to warm up to me. None of my decisions are based one somone having certain bonuses or having certain levels. It just goes to show how great the game is when you look at the characters as people and not skill points, levels, and pluses and minuses.

Also, I really like how the light/dark side and force powers are implemented in the game. I like the "force meter", and I really like how the powers associated with your morality are "cheaper" to use than the opposite ones. I would say that this is the most effective system for the Force that I have seen in a game so far.
