Crow_Nest
I played UT 2003 and 2004, Far Cry, Painkiller and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. But sometimes i get this weird sound that does not stop, and its coming from the speakers, not the PC itself. But happens most of the time when i play UT 2003/2004 and Harry Potter PoA. Specs: Windows XP Pro AMD Althon XP2000 1.6 GHz GeForce FX 5700 Ultra 128MB (52.72 drivers) 512MB RAM SB Audigy Gamer MSI nForce 2 K7N2-L I already gotten the latest drivers and directx, but still get the same thing. Can anyone tell me what this sound is? And is there a way to prevent it from happening?
El Sitherino
have you updated your soundcard drivers? Also, you might need some game patches, It could be a conflict between your card and those games.
Sabretooth
Crow, can you describe the sound in detail, and like, when you heard it first, mostly when does it come, what sound is it (a beep/toot/slurp or whatever), who you favourite character in U... never mind. StormHammer
Are you sure it's not the hamster? They need feeding sometimes, you know. Anyway, it would help if you told us what this sound is like. Just saying it's 'weird' doesn't cut it. Is it hissing, spitting, warbling, screeching? What? Does your motherboard have a built in sound chip? Have you tried disabling it through the BIOS? Are there any IRQ conflicts with the sound card? Have you run the Directx diagnostic utility to see if that reports anything unusual? Do you have a microphone or strong magnetic source close to your speakers? Is your equipment properly shielded from radio interference? Are there aliens lurking under your desk cracking walnuts? Crow_Nest
I already have the latest Audigy drivers and latest drivers for my motherboard. It sounds like a "di" sound. Could it be my CPU/video card/mother board overheating? Have you run the Directx diagnostic utility to see if that reports anything unusual? Eh how do i do that? Sabretooth
I don believe it , Crow! You being so cool in computers don't know how to check diagnostic DirectX stuff? Okay, do this - Go to C:\Program Files\DirectX\Setup\DxDiag.exe Next, cliock on the Sound Tab. In the status area, a problem might be found. If there is none, click on Test DirectSound. Also check the Music tab.

Sabretooth
Now the only help available is to infilitrate the BIOS. This can be done by hitting the Del key when your computer starts. Do something in there and kick that sound outta there.
Sivy
if it only happens with certain games then i would think it was a driver problem have you tried reinstalling dirextX? that might help
manoman81
This maybe a dumb thought, but how old are your spearkers? Are they starting to die? Are you hitting the cord while sitting at your cpu?
Crow_Nest
I think their quite old, im using the Cambridge SoundWorks which is very old, even older than Creative and others. Originally posted by Siv if it only happens with certain games then i would think it was a driver problem have you tried reinstalling dirextX? that might help Yeah, i reinstalled it like 3 times already. EDIT: Ok, seems that its most-likely to be overheating. I removed the casing and put a fan near it (not too near) Played Harry Potter for more than 30 mins, WITHOUT problems, but the same thing happend after that. I've been reading the tech support, i have a feeling it has something to do with that dxdiag.

Crow_Nest
Hmmm.... I asked in another forum, they said it could be the lack of RAM, but 512 is plenty enough right? So is that possible, if not i will get maybe 1024.

It's less that Athlons are hot..EVERY processor runs blazing hot. Anyway..you could dump your computer in a pool of Liquid Nitrogen. That might help. Crow_Nest
The tech support also mentioned it could be the lack of power supply for my graphic card? If thats so, how can check/change them?

Crow_Nest
Never mind, solved it. It was the darn dust n' dirt clouded in my motherboard fan. Everythings ok now, although i have to play with the casing open.
