Critical error, need some help quick...

I just rebooted my comp, and when it's starting up it gives me this error message;

Windows could not start because the following file is either missing or corrupt;

<Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll

please re-install a copy of the missing file

Is there any way to fix this, or am I doomed?

My OS is Windows XP..

you're doomed

but you can try this.

get your win XP cd-rom and boot up with it and go into 'Recovery Console' then type in this, bootcfg /rebuild

that should rebuild your config files and repair/replace the missing or damaged file.

if this doesn't work then a reformat might be in order.

edit: ok, i did some surfing and found this website with another way of fixing it.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm

scroll down to the bottom to find out how to deal with the problem.

its a bit more complicated so I would try the config rebuild first and if that doesn't work then try this.

Uh thanks... :)

Unfortunately, when i started up with the xp disc in the station, nothing happened, but I managed to start up in Win 98.. Is there an easier way to fix it now that I can actually acces my harddrives?

At least I know I can backup files now... :)

did you boot up with the XP CD?

you might have to make sure that your CD-ROM is in the boot devices in BIOS.

then when you start up it will say "press a key to boot from CD-ROM" then after loading the files it need you can open the recovery console.

It won't detect anything in the cd-drives...

I've set it up as a boot device :-s

Maybe... but I had a ZoneAlarm firewall constantly up...

@ IG; shut up.

Yeah, but you could have downloaded a torjan or virus that opened a back door. Some viruses never even reveal themselves to you.

I know what you're gonna say next, "but I have Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect"!

Auto-Protect doesn't catch everything; you should constantly do a weekly full-computer scan.

Had that going with two different anti viruses, spybot, ad-aware, SWAT-It, and some anti-trojan thingy... :-s

But I think it might have been a trojan..

The location of the My Documents of an XP machine are under C:\Documents And Setrtings\User Name\My Documents, not C:\My Documents that a Win98 machine will use....

no more disturbing images, PLEASE!

IG, you must be one of those ppl with a photographic mempry, as you seem to remember every thing in images :D

I think IGs computer and Pie's computer should be left in a room together to caress and rub each other down with baby oil... :D
