Pie™ Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 I just rebooted my comp, and when it's starting up it gives me this error message; Windows could not start because the following file is either missing or corrupt; <Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll please re-install a copy of the missing file Is there any way to fix this, or am I doomed? My OS is Windows XP..
Sivy Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 you're doomed but you can try this. get your win XP cd-rom and boot up with it and go into 'Recovery Console' then type in this, bootcfg /rebuild that should rebuild your config files and repair/replace the missing or damaged file. if this doesn't work then a reformat might be in order. edit: ok, i did some surfing and found this website with another way of fixing it. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm scroll down to the bottom to find out how to deal with the problem. its a bit more complicated so I would try the config rebuild first and if that doesn't work then try this.
Mex Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 Oooh, some of the school computers had that problem. Sorry, can't help.

Uh thanks... Unfortunately, when i started up with the xp disc in the station, nothing happened, but I managed to start up in Win 98.. Is there an easier way to fix it now that I can actually acces my harddrives? At least I know I can backup files now...
Sivy Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 did you boot up with the XP CD? you might have to make sure that your CD-ROM is in the boot devices in BIOS. then when you start up it will say "press a key to boot from CD-ROM" then after loading the files it need you can open the recovery console.

It won't detect anything in the cd-drives... I've set it up as a boot device :-s

Yeah, but you could have downloaded a torjan or virus that opened a back door. Some viruses never even reveal themselves to you. I know what you're gonna say next, "but I have Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect"! Auto-Protect doesn't catch everything; you should constantly do a weekly full-computer scan.

Had that going with two different anti viruses, spybot, ad-aware, SWAT-It, and some anti-trojan thingy... :-s But I think it might have been a trojan..
El Sitherino Posted June 18, 2004 Posted June 18, 2004 norton sucks anyway. anyway about your computer, PUNCH IT IN THE THROAT! ... I mean take a hammer to it.
