Splinter Cell movie...

Of course it is. It's about milking a franchise of as much cash as possible. They'll throw a wad of dough at it, dress it up in 'speshul fx' and wait for the fans of the game to line their pockets.

I'm still waiting for a half-way decent game-to-movie adaptation. I know it's a vain hope...but still...

It's the same reasons old TV shows keep getting made into feature films:

1.) They figure they already have a large built-in audience, guaranteeing a certain number of ticket sales with minimal promotion.

2.) The story, settings, and characters already exist in some form, requiring minimal (read: cheap) alterations to be made into a film setting.

The movie business doesn't like risks. They'd rather make the same succesful movie over and over until everyone's totally sick of it than take a chance on something totally new and radically different and fail.

So games and TV shows that were succesful are the next best thing... a safe bet.

*listens at door of meeting discussing the movie*

Marketing Exec: Okay, we're making a Splinter Cell movie. We need to make sure it appeals to as wide an audience as possible, so we'll go through the checklist to see everything is in place....

Unknown director, or one with 'experience' of adapting videogames to movies (cheap and will do as we say) - [Check]

Unknown actors, or those who are down on their luck at the moment (cheap and will do as we say) - [check]

A wrestler in a main starring role - [check]

A hip-hop or rap singer to provide light entertainment and put more bums on seats - [check]

Villain with an English accent - [check]

Walking corpse with an English accent - [check]

Obligatory bullet-time sequence - [check]

Obligatory martial-arts sequence - [check]

Car chase in fast cars with lots of explosions - [check]

A strong-willed leading lady who will suddenly become a wimp and require rescue - [check]

Corny one-liners - [check]

A plot with 'twists and turns' where the villain is apparent from the first moment - [check]

Bad wire work and dodgy CGI effects - [check]

Limitless ammo for all weapons during shootouts - [check]

A rock soundtrack that makes it hard to hear what the actors are saying to cover up any guffs - [check]

Someone who knows about the game: But sir...Splinter Cell is supposed to be about using 'stealth' - you know, covert operations?

Marketing Exec: Yeah? So? Who wants to watch a guy roaming around in the dark for 2 hours? We'll do this by the numbers...

:D

I love Splinter Cell. They better not fu*k it up!

It will probably turn out like every other game to movie

Well, if you think of other video game movies, they have a built in cheesy plot that works for games, but not movies (Super Mario Bros. Resident Evil, Mortal Combat...) Splinter Cell's goal as a game is to bring real life believablility to a game to make it intense without the bells and whistles.

Other game movies have stayed true to the games, which in essense has been their downfall. But with Splinter Cell, if they stay true, it very well may prove to be the first Video Game Movie to actually work.

If any game can be adapted to a movie without making it sh*t, it's Splinter Cell.

Yeah, it should be refreshing to to see a spy movie that actualy has, ya know, spy stuff in it as opposed to some pervert whose primary opjective is to have sex with everything that moves in essentially the same movie as the twenty before it.

*cough* James Bond *cough*

Oh. Is THAT what you were talking about. I certainly couldn't figure it out for myself :dozey:

You do realize that James Bond movies aren't about James bond the super spy right? It's about James Bond the badass who gets all the ladies and looks cool killing bad guys.

Now if you don't like that combination that's fine by me, but to rip on it because it's not a "spy" movie is just stupid.

[whiny voice] Don't call me stupid. No need for name calling. I'm gonna tell. [/whiny voice] J/K :p

Don't get me wrong. I see the bond movies as they come out, and usually enjoy them. I wasn't ripping them so much as making a casual, pretty obvious observation about them.

Even so, if they can pull off a SC movie, it's gonna once again put serious spy movies on the map. And after spy movies of late being like James Bond and "I, Spy" I'd say it's over due.

Splinter Cell could turn into a good movie. On a side note, a few of my friends wanted to make a Splinter Cell trilogy of , but none of us have enough time.:p

They could have been good, too...

back on subject, if any game I've played has what it takes to make a good movie, it's Splinter Cell.

I hope it will be good. I just hope to god :(

And OT, who here would LOVE to see bond or any other badass like him to walk into a room with a bunch of machine guns and grenades, do a badass pose, and then just go" F*** this" and walk away. I think that would be freakin hilarious :D

Hollywood has no ideas at the moment.

Half their films are remakes of hong kong or korean movies (the grudge, the ring, tale of two sisters, my sassy girl, etc..)

(and mostly rubbish in comparisson to the originals) Taxi (ok, thats french...)

Half their films are based on computer games or comics. (and mostly rubbish in comparisson to the originals)

Half are remakes of old films (oceans 11/12, italian job, alfie, producers, etc...) and only about 1/2 are better than the originals.

half seem to be biopics at the moment (ray charles, bobby darren, etc...) which don't need much in the way of originality.

The rest seem to be sequels...

Can anyone think of any original new franchises that have started up in the last year or two? The riddick ones i guess, but even there the game is the best of the three...)

Bah, you're looking in all the wrong places. "Franchise" movies tend to suck.

2004 had some great movies. Sideways, Garden State, Napoleon Dynamite, Shaun of the Dead, Motorcycle Diaries, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, etc...

Then again, these films are about as far away from Hollywood as you can get...
