StormHammer
May they rest in peace, and my thoughts are with the families. Yes, the latest death count is 23,000 - but according to various reports there are over 20,000 people missing as well. I fear the final death toll will be in excess of 50,000. This is one of the worst natural disasters in the past 100 years. Seeing images of a father wading through water holding his dead child sent a chill to my bones. I can't access that link at the top for some reason - so here's another for those who might also be having problems... BBC report. As for those who say they don't care about this tragedy, just keep in mind events like this can happen anywhere in the world. According to a a scientific study by the Horizon programme on UK TV the United States could be facing this kind of disaster within the next couple of hundred years - or sooner. None of us are invulnerable - and to be honest, as a species we're a bit stupid when it comes to taking precautions against natural disasters. Pad
Yeah, it´s a real tradigy. But the thing that fascinates me about it is the magnitude of that tidal wave. It got all the way to Africa.

Acrylic
Last numbers I heard were 23,700+. And I heard out of all identified, 8 of them were Americans. I really don't care if you're American, German, African, Asian, Australian, or whatever. You're alive. But I understand why we're mentioning it, because they are from our country, so, it does make sense. Horrible Tragedy though. I'm glad that no one from my family lives in Asia and/ or visited Asia. Logistically, they need to pay for the infrastructure they set up across nations. Everytime someone sprouts of on this it really makes me scratch my head. Ive worked with Care Australia and Medicine Sans Frontiers, mainly with kids in the north of Australia and we will be trekking over to east timor soon. These organisataions are like companies, they need to be managed as such, so they can continue their good work. Let me give you some examples. 1. You donate to an organisation like the Red Cross/Unicef etc : The money they collect goes into building clinics, training nurses, setting up vaccination and disease prevention and management programs. even in a fund specifically set up for a particular catastrophe, where do you think all this money goes ?? Do you think it goes to buy food and medicine. Gosh no. So you plonk your $5 down, and little Sri Lankan kids will get a loaf of bread right... This is not how it works. Foodstuffs and medicines are largely donated, or exchanged for tax write offs with government. I am not cynical or upset about that because that the only way companies can afford to donate what they can. The money received in collection goes into rebuilding insfrastructure. Training local doctors/nurses, hiring contractors to clean up, decontaminate, rebuild ; all long term, large scope big picture stuff. 2. You donate you money to the "Asian Earthquake" fund, sponsored by whoever.... Do you think these organisations travel out, and set up the logistical networks from scratch to deliver food and clothing. Of course not. Why would they do that when the UN, Red Cross etc has worked for decades to set that up. More often than not, that money is funnelled back through to the larger organisations, or in some rarer instances, help pay for specific services. So, rather than whining and wavin your fists at RC, I suggest you go down to your local RC, CCF, or Unicef office, and volunteer to be a collector. Get your collection can, and hit the streets/malls....thats the best way we can help atm. mtfbwya

Besides all they really are is a middle man, they shouldn't be so greedy to take money we're trying to get to the needy. I can understand 15-20% which is what many funding groups do, but 80+% is ridiculous. the 15-20% that is taken by many organizations is only to pay for the places they are renting out to collect funds. After that ALL the money goes to the needy.

That type of fabrication is reprehensible, in any argument, let alone one where you are attacking the worlds largest aid organisation. for anyone who wants to put their money where their mouth is, check out the Asia Quake and Tsunami Appeal site which is accessed via the aussie red cross website, or the internation red cross/red crescent site(which was down last I checked ) The american RC site doesnt have a direct link to that specific appeal, dont know why ?? mtfbwya
