Constantine

What, you think Keanu doesn't deserve a thread in the swamp? :D

Well, I saw it. And I must say I was impressed. It's a decent movie, not without Matrix-esque effects, but great in its storytelling.

Even though Keanu spoke in a whisper for half the movie...

The depiction of Hell is incredible. Almost exactly what I would expect hell to look like. The characters are memorable, especially

Midnight and Gabriel

. Constantine himself exudes awesomeness. And he's got some damn cool weaponry :D

Unfortunately, at a few times this movie suffered from "The Matrix Syndrome" - something that you would expect to be explained is left unclear and we must draw our own conclusions. Although this occurs several times throughout the movie, it does not hinder the overall plot.

My score - 8/10

:p

It looks interesting. Won't come out over here for a week or two though.

After seeing the trailer I can't help but think that KEanu was a bad choice for the part... not because of him, but because it all sounded quite matrix like to start with, the trailer looked pretty matrix-like and having keanu there as well just adds to that feeling.

The problem with comic book adaptions is that they are just churning them out (there have been what, 15 or so in the last 4 years?) and (apart from a few exceptions) making them all the same.

They don't seem to put much thought into making each film unique, or what special elements each comic has that makes it unique and loved... they just churn out the same "dark looking, everyone wearing black, rain soaked action films"... just changing the main character.

Daredevil was my fave comic book character when i was a kid, but the movie sucked. It was nearly identical to the first spiderman in every way, but always slightly inferior.

The only ones that have really been good have been the X-men films and Hellboy, each of which at least TRIED to put some feeling and uniquness into the thing. I guess you could say HULK tried tobe different as well, but that didn't really work.

I have a fondness for ghostrider, but i bet that movie ends up as just another clone (spiderman, daredevil, elektra, underworld, LXG etc...). I have high hopes for new x-men or hellboy flics though.

Batman begins also looks like they are trying something a bit different, so I have high hopes for that too.

----------

The thing I don't get is that they keep changing the source material to TAKE OUT the eements that make it clever or unique... that is just crazy. LXG for example could have been an awesome film with a totally different look and feel... but they just made it a generic dumb comic book movie.

Constantine too seems to me like it would have been moreinteresting if it had stuck with the original setting from Hellblazer, eg: liverpool.

I understand they want to "americanise it", and i'm used to that. But when you ave so many similar movies it would actually have been a refreshing and distinguishing feature to have a comic book movie that WASN'T set in the US. Not for any anti-us feeling... just for a bit of variation. A gritty, more realistic, british style comic book movie would probably seem quiote cool.

Mind you, they would probably cast american actors with terrible fake accents, so maybe it isn't such a good idea after all... :D

Good storytelling? I heard the movie was plain action run. All comix-to-movies suck, IMO.

They ruined Hellblazer. :(

I didn't like the movie, and I really dislike Keanu Reeves doing serious movies. Plus he was a horrible choice for the character.

The things I hated were little facts hinted in the movie (when Keanu finds out that Weisz is a twin he decides to help because he was a twin himself) that only people who know about the comics are supposed to get. Just things that the normal person who wanted to have a good time wouldn't get.

Good enough to spend my money on. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

And you always pictured hell as LA on fire?

I'm just wondering, but am I the only one who thought Gabriel was a man for half the movie? I mean, to me, she looked like a man, a man with a girlish voice. For those who plan on mocking me I say STFU.

That was how it was intended. Angels are supposed to be androgynous. So, Gabriel was played by a woman, with a (lean) male's body presumably CG'ed in. You're not crazy. ^_^

Doing research on the comic reveals that Hellblazer had an entirely different feel from Constantine. They should've just made an 'inspired by' type thing...which I guess they sorta kinda did with not calling it Hellblazer.

For example, I enjoyed Constantine's character arc in the movie. But reading about the original character? Wow, there's no way in Hell (pun intended) the original would go where Keanu's Constantine did. :)

Some of the parts where they ad-libbed turned out really well, other parts didn't.

For one thing, the "Satan's son" thing was boring and stupid. Were we actually supposed to be interested in that guy? More development required. They could've played up the Gabriel angle for example...

I assumed they portrayed angels that way but wasn't entirely sure. Either way I sat there for half the movie trying to figure out if the actor was male or female. Though it turned out to be a somewhat masculine looking female actor.

It was a guy's body. You can tell in Gabriel's final scene (the outfit shows).

I knew in advance it was a female actor, so I didn't try to figure it out; I thought of 'it' as a male, though.

Nalukai: Actually, I loved Hellboy. XD (Except for the

sorta limp destructo-monster climax-ending...

that was only one scene though, so hey)

Are you saying they stuck her head on a guys body? Isn't she just a uhh "handsome" woman? They also had her wrapped up a lot. I think that would hide quite a bit as well. I'm totally lost.

Hellboy could have been great if it had a better ending. That big blob tentacle monster showing up was just an eye roll inducing mess. :(

I think that's what they did for his/her first scene. But in the final Gabriel scene, look at his/her top. You can see the features of a male chest under the white shirt; either CG or a prosthetic.

Maybe if I could find a screenie of that scene...I'm going off of memory right now...

Re Hellboy:

Exactly. :( But still, a minor taint on a really good film...

Newsflash:

Keanu is a terrible, terrible actor.

Mark my words, The Matrix will be his swan song. Really though....anybody could have played THAT part. :p

Huh...maybe I'm just being blind again. But I thought they altered it to look male. :x

Ya, I THOUGHT she had a masculine chest through the white shirt. I'd have to see it again to see if I was mistaken. See what I mean about confusion? :D
