Girl slashed in class.

The problem here is that practically anything can be used as a weapon. A pencil or pen can be used to kill you just as effectively as a knife, if you know how. Even a humble paperclip or staple can inflict serious damage. You can't just keep taking things out of the way of people on the off-chance someone might use them as a weapon.

Clearly some kids are simply not getting the message about 'right and wrong' or simply don't care. Any kid who can slash another like that doesn't just need corrective action from the school - they need assessment and help, because something in them is obviously unhinged or out of kilter.

Hell, back when I was a kid if you had a grievance with someone you sorted it outside of school with fisticuffs, and that was that. Nowadays you need to check you're wearing a kevlar vest in case the other guy pulls a knife or gun on you. If the cure for all this kind of behaviour is going back to whacking kids upside the head and putting the fear of God into them, well...it works in the rest of the animal kingdom. :p

Maybe some kids just don't know better, because their *parents* simply don't care. Not getting the message isn't necessarily the kids fault. The kid's probably only the red alert light to show that the message is not or not properly submitted.

Apparently most kids in the UK now carry knives, it seems like the chav/gang culture that we have finally inherited from watching so many US films is finally coming to fruition... we now have our own little version of white trash. sigh.

Why was this on MegaTokyo again???

The real weapon was how nuts the girl was in the first place, you can kill people with pretty much anything, stuff you can find in school.

Like big text books, chairs, forks from the cafiterial, pen or pencil to the eye or ears, backpack stap, etc.

0.01% of students are going to attack other students like that not because they had a weapon, but that they were ****ed up enough in the first place to kill them.

Example: You are in school (or in school again if you are older) and there is this really bad bully in your school. You suddenly discover that you have a pistol in your back-pack and its loaded and school will end in 5 minutes.

What would you do?

If you are a physco, you shoot him after school, kill him, and ruin your life and his.

But if you are a normal person (ie: not physco) you will probably toss the gun in a dumpster on the way home from school. Duh!

The killer is not the gun or the parents or the video game, its the person that killed, no one else.

Unless kids started killing eachother on a daily basis around the world, then we could worry...

Wow, sarcasm. Sure beats all the scientific evidence that violent video games in the hands of little kids are dangerous.

You're not going to turn down the round Earth theory with sarcasm, too, are you, since you obviously think it overrules facts?

Wait a minute, you actually agree with Jack Thompson?

I think thats a great point, however I agree with whoever said that it is the parents fault. When children are younger 90% of them begin to model off of their parents or their friends. What I would really want to see is whether or not this child had an abusive father who may have hurt her mother (or visa versa) because that would explain a lot.

And with Jack Thompson, In some ways I agree, but nearly to that extent. Yes, a violent video game will rub off on a child. Especially one who is younger, such as a pre-teen. But again the problem is not the child or the video game (as Jack Thompson thinks) it is yet again the parents fault for letting them play the game in the first place. If anyone finds anymore information on this girl that did the slashing lets see some links.

Chances are the mother would be the one that was abusive if any parental influence were involved.

As for the whole video gamer = murderer thing, at 12 you should know what you can and cannot do. Crap like "She was warped by video games" is nothing but a shoddy defense.

Also, blame should be 50/50 between the parents and the kid. It's obvious the parents failed to examplify right and wrong, and it's the fault of the kid for not growing the **** up. Unless the little bastard is a sociopath (which by reading reports on this, she isn't) the parents didn't do their part.

Well, yes, it's not really only the parents fault. In fact I think there're a lot of influences causing a person to do such things, also including the behaviour of the "victim" (man, what do I know, bitchy attitude, being an idiot in general, anything). Of course this all is in no way an excuse for doing that, but it's a cause, a reason, whatever. And, yes of course, to a certain degree even kiddos are responsible for their deeds, but noone cannot expect that a 12 year old kid with a pretty normal lack of real experience knows and sees all the consequences for what he is doing. However, a 12 year old should know about the consequences of hurting others.

Example: You are in school (or in school again if you are older) and there is this really bad bully in your school. You suddenly discover that you have a pistol in your back-pack and its loaded and school will end in 5 minutes.

(a) If I am really a psycho, I'm probably not shooting a bully, I'm just killing a random person who's probably accidently a bully who was just going to bug me without seeing the possibility of me shooting in his face. If I am a psycho, I'm not going to suddenly discover I got a gun, I'll go and get one and probably will shoot anyone I meet on my way home.

(b) Why should it be my fault that "the really bad bully" is really an a-hole and buggin' around with me?? Is it me alone that caused the fact that I'm probably going to pull a gun and blow him away? Why exactly am I ignoring the fact that this will ruin a lot of lifes, cause pain and all that? Is it because I am psycho, or maybe because the bully is kind of a psycho and I can't stand the pressure and see no other way out?

© Why exactly do I accept shooting someone as solution to solve problems? Because I like Mickey Mouse, am 12 and not f**king grown up yet (Errmm. It just fits right in right 'ere, m'kay..? ;b ), or because I see people doing it all the time (read: in movies, the news, in games, at school etc) without being "informed" about all the consequences of such actions?

The killer is not the gun or the parents or the video game, its the person that killed, no one else.

Yeah, that's right-- the pile of dogshhh you just stepped in is not there because of the dogfood-industry or because of certain things in nature or because noone has sewn *it* close, it is in fact there because the dog put it there following his own decision. :~

Mr Naylor, 33, said the attacker had been causing his daughter problems for five months and he had been in school on the morning of the slashing to discuss the matter with the deputy head.

He said that on a previous occasion his daughter had come home "absolutely clawed" after a fight with the girl.

He said he believed the latest attack happened after Shanni tried to protect a smaller boy from being bullied by the girl at Myrtle Springs School in Sheffield.

The fact that this girl was a known bully, and had been reported before does imply that she'd had problems for some time... which is likely due to environment as much as anything.

You just have to watch any of the non-stop reality tv shows on british tv like "supernanny" to see that the attitude of the parents has a huge effect on the attitude of the children. You see parents shouting and swearing and getting angry... and then the parents seem confused as to why their kids shout and swear and get angry. It isn't rocket science.

Then there is the current fashion of gang and knife culture, plus the fact that many parents these days are the product of the "there is no society", "everyone for themselves" 80s culture, and the kids pick up on that.

There is also overwhealming scientific evidence that the junk food diets of today's kids make them more hyperactive, more violent and give them shorter attention spans.

In comparisson to those factors (and even DNA) the effect of things like video games pales in comparisson.

At least the victim seems to be being pretty brave about the whole thing, which impresses me... and hopefully she'll get out of it without any long term scars:

A WEALTHY businessman touched by the ordeal of schoolgirl Shanni Naylor who had her face slashed in a classroom attack has offered to pay for specialist surgery to remove the scarring.
