MTV2
E3 isn't cancelled, theyre just downsizng to the press. they made no money. they spent 50 million on the event and and The hotels and service industry in L.A. took in over 50 million during E3 every year. it was simply just too expensive to involve everyone. toms
has anyone here actually been to an E3? I can't see that this makes much difference to us at all. it was always fun at e3 time when we had so much news... but for months either side we'd have nothing to talk about. And the huge ammount of games announced at e3 tends to mean that a lot of the cooler looking small ones get completely lost in the shuffle. Sounds like it was EA that was the first to pull out. That'll give everyone another reason to hate them I'd quite like it if they kept running it as a smaller event WITHOUT the main players.. cos that would give some much needed exposure to some of the smaller fish in the pond. But i can't see it happening as it just wouldn't get so much press coverage.
Mike Windu
Oh well. That's about all I can say. There'll be other press releases and game shows to continue on..

Lightsaberboy
has anyone here actually been to an E3? Yes. Twice. I dont understand why they dont make E3 a public event like AX or something. I bet they'd make loads of money off of people wanting to come and see all the upcoming games and stuff.
swphreak
I don't see how this will effect anything. Journalists reported on past E3s, they'll report on the next E3, and we'll read about it in various websites' respective E3 sections. I can't really blame the big companies, it's all about the benjamins. I know I sure as hell wouldn't spend millions of dollars when I could hire some webguru to make me a fancy website and give an intern a camera and tell them to go around my game studio. Besides, PAX > E3.
Darth Groovy
Eh, if it means more money for developers to make better games instead of spending it on their E3 presentation then it's a good thing. I'm with Lynk on this one, and it won't affect the industry one bit anyways. It was all downhill when they made E-3 less accessible to the public, and more into a selfish puppet show for big retailers instead. There will still be presentations, they will probably just scale it down. I'm in the business anyways, and i'm not in the slightest bit worried about it. The kind of profit we are turning in this year so far...video games are HUGE, and there is a broader age group than before. For example my average XBOX 360 customer is mid to late 30's. We are not being affected by this even one bit. There are still alot of people that don't know what E-3 is, and they are not buying less. This is probably what the software giants figured out already.
Char Ell
I think this is bull****. And as long as I'm seeing Planning is already underway for E³ 2007. Mark your calendars: E³ 2007 May 16-18, 2007 Los Angeles Convention Center on the official website, I'm not buying this. http://www.e3expo.com/default.aspx Just checked the E3 website and it's not there anymore... It was all downhill when they made E-3 less accessible to the public, and more into a selfish puppet show for big retailers instead. Hmmm... I thought that the whole problem here was that too many people were attending E3 which I translate as E3 being more accessible to the public in recent years than it was before. I thought the whole idea of E3 was to have a conference where people in the game development community could make business connections, evaluate each other's products and technology demos, announce new products, etc. Of course avid gamers wanted to get into the mix and apparently were able to gain access otherwise I don't think we would be seeing this change in E3. St. Jimmy
E3 was part of our culture, part of who we are. Every year when E3 rolled around we'd all get excited and a pleasant rush of news and games. And now it's gone. We will remember. (We will remember.) BongoBob
After thinking about it longer, I now have come to realize that this is in fact a good thing. It just took a bit to sink in.
edlib
Some other game convention (either one already existing, or one yet to be created...) will rise up to take it's place... and that will be when all the big product announcements of the year will happen. It might look and feel different, but the end result will ultimately be exactly the same.

swphreak
You know what's going to happen now? PAX will get better. According to Gabe, they're getting calls from publishers and developers asking about floor space at PAX '07. Personally I like PAX better anyways. They release a huge ass DVD packed full of PAX footage.
