The Doctor Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 I'm going to start this off by making a slight observation that may offend some people. I want to say that it's not my intention to offend anyone, I'm simply stating what I've seen. I've noticed that the community here at LucasForums is rather... how shall I say... somewhat cold and sterile. I never noticed until I started signing up at some other forums - and it was KotORForce that made me realise how a forum, im my opinion, should be. Now, I'm not saying this place is unfriendly - quite the contrary. I love this place. First forum I ever felt welcome at (though that sense of being welcome has declined somewhat recently). I just don't think there's a real friendship or sense of comradery here. This is due in part, I think, to the sheer size and scope of the forums here - larger forums always have a somewhat colder or more sterile place. The staff are too separated from the members - the staff are friends with other staff, and the members are friends with the other members, with a few exceptions. I think a good way to make this place more welcome and less 'clique dominated', for lack of a better term, would be to give people a better chance to get to know each other. It's hard to really get to know people through forums. Real-time chat is a much better means of getting to know each other. To that end, I would like to suggest that the staff consider setting up an IRC channel on gamesurge or something like that. I know setting up a channe is as easy as sin, and wouldn't require a great deal of maintanence. I think a channel or a handful of channels would be better than our own network - an IRC network would just develop into seperate channels for each clique, which is counterproductive to my suggestion. Would anyone else consider using an IRC channel to chat with their fellow forumites? It's not hard to find an IRC host - I myself use mIRC, but there are plenty of free ones out there. What does everyone think?

I can agree that in theory that might be a nice complement, since the forums are mostly for discussing and not so much chatting. Though if you look up a few posts there is a sticky about a StarwarsKnights IRC channel, and it's also mentioned under the "Chat" page on http://www.starwarsknights.com. However, the few times I've checked that channel it's been pretty much dead, either completely empty or just a few people sitting there idle. So either it's a matter of poor advertising of the place, of there simply isn't much interest for it.
El Sitherino Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 I think most of us that talk stick around #echonet. #starwarsknights has essentially become our haven of perversion.
HerbieZ Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Teamspeak channel, nothing to get the party going more than a great big voice comms orgy.
The Doctor Posted August 30, 2006 Author Posted August 30, 2006 Hmm... Sorry, I wasn't aware there already was an IRC Channel for this place. Now I do. One problem, though. It keeps trying to resolve the IP for gamesurge.net, but for some reason, it can't...

stoffe Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 One problem, though. It keeps trying to resolve the IP for gamesurge.net, but for some reason, it can't... Must be some local DNS trouble, it resolves without problems here. Try to look it up with the DNS Stuff site and see if that works.
The Doctor Posted August 30, 2006 Author Posted August 30, 2006 What IRC client are you using? I use mIRC, but I was trying to access it from the StarWarsKnights 'Chat' section. For some reason, when I try to connect to #starwarsknights on mIRC, it says 'Channels locked in Options Dialogue'.

Nah I just connected to it. I just opened up chatzilla and connected to irc.gamesurge.net and joined #starwarsknights.
The Doctor Posted August 30, 2006 Author Posted August 30, 2006 Alright, I figured out what I was doing wrong, and I'm connected - but it would be cool to have some activity in there. Maybe some type of advertising of the channel would work wonders... Perhaps making it existance more visible on the forums?
Jeff Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 I think most of us that talk stick around #echonet. It's definitley the place to be. There's also #jediknight, #empireatwar, and #lucasforums, in the LF network.
Prime Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 I think most of us that talk stick around #echonet. That's where the cool kids hang out.
milo Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 That's where the cool kids hang out. I wish I was cool enough to go there. I tried earlier, but I said some things Dath didn't like, and he kicked me off.
The Doctor Posted September 1, 2006 Author Posted September 1, 2006 I didn't bring a goat to #echonet, so I wasn't allowed.
Det. Bart Lasiter Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 I wish I was cool enough to go there. I tried earlier, but I said some things Dath didn't like, and he kicked me off. HAHA! LOSER!
swphreak Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Too bad #echonet is for a different forum. And don't mind Dath, it's Dath. We cretainly could have some lively chats. There are currently 40 active users, and there's at least several hundred active users that visit the site. All you have to do is join the channel, get other people to join the channel and start a conversation. Odds are, I'm always online lurking or something.
Commander Obi-Wan Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 I used to be on #echonet quite frequently, though my trial for mIRC ran out. Yeah, just don't mind Dath.
Pho3nix Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 I used to be on #echonet quite frequently, though my trial for mIRC ran out. Yeah, just don't mind Dath. You know you can just click continue when it says that the mIRC trial is out.
Commander Obi-Wan Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 You know you can just click continue when it says that the mIRC trial is out. I noticed. But, when I went online, I couldn't respond. Well, nobody noticed. And I went on from Echobase, through Java. And when I said, "hey" there was no response.

Commander Obi-Wan Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 I know I connected, I just couldn't say anything. Thanks jmac. I'll try that out soon. EDIT: I assume I'll still have to pay jmac?
Jeff Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 I've been using mIRC for over a year and I never payed for anything. I know other clients for irc are xchat and gaim though.
